Ranking the bowls... - BostonCard - 01-02-2019

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/ranking-all-39-college-football-bowl-games-for-2018-19-from-the-worst-to-the-best/

Quote:18. Sun -- Stanford 14, Pittsburgh 13: A game similar to the Redbox Bowl, but with more competence, a few more points and a few more big plays. Still, the foundation of this ranking is built mostly on it being a 1-point game. (20)

Ouch; if the Sun Bowl was like the Redbox, but with "more competence", I shudder to think what the Redbox bowl (which I followed but didn't watch) was like.

Of course, he ranked the cheez-its bowl as the top bowl, so the rankings are... suspect.

Quote:1. Cheez-It -- TCU 10, California 7 OT: Yes, that's right. My No. 1 bowl game this season featured 17 points and nine turnovers. Believe me, this was not a pretty game. It was not a well-played game. In fact, I'm confident both Gary Patterson and Justin Wilcox will burn the tape and move on to prepare for next season rather than go over what went wrong. But in spite of all that, it was great. There were so many moments in this game where you were openly announcing to yourself, or a crowded room, "What the f--- was that!?" If you were watching this game in a bar or alongside thousands of your closest friends on Twitter, it wasn't just a game but a social event. Twenty years from now, you won't remember most things from the 2018 college football bowl season, but I guarantee you'll remember watching the Cheez-It Bowl. Just beautifully bad football. A cult classic. Five stars. If they ever make it into a movie, both The Rock and Jason Statham will be in it. (35)

I dunno man, I'm with him on the Cheez-Its bowl thing. Maybe not ranking it #1, but certainly in the top handful. I'm not sure there was any other game I was so hesitant to walk away from for a moment (including, notably, ours). Football is entertainment and that game was entertaining. Sure, it wasn't in the way football is supposed to be entertaining, it's more like a "so bad it's good" movie (which he gets at with the "cult classic" phrasing).

Put me in for agreement.  As I kept scrolling down this article, and didn't see the Cheez-It bowl listed, I realized that it had to be number #1.  I did watch it - and I am happy that I did.  It was epic.  It'll go down in history. On that Dec 26, I realized it was on and I asked my wife for the remote to check the score. I saw that it was 7-0 Cal - and my first thought was, Wow, Cal actually scored.  Then came the appearance of another stat - 4 interceptions thus far at the beginning of the second quarter - and I knew I had to watch this trainwreck.

Here's the best part.  My daughter came home to visit for the holidays and watched part of it with me.  She left the room in the fourth quarter to take care of other things.  She missed the overtime, and when she came back, I asked her if she knew the result.  She says she checked her iPhone and saw that TCU won.  I said, "Oh, but Cal had the ball in the first possession...." and she replied, "Let me guess, it was intercepted."
You can't make this stuff up.  (I have to admit I'm chuckling now as I type this.)

That is hilarious! But he forgot my favorite part -- the TCU SID being hit with a 15 yard penalty for tackling a ref.

Shizzle, I'm going to have to watch a replay of that game.  I missed it.

Best bowl game this season.   Only one I will remember a few months from now.

Cheez-It was the perfect sponsor for the game, and their comedic approach to the game and post-game was perfect.

The INT in OT was amazing.   It would have been much better for TCU to win on that OT as a pick-six, but it was still a great game.

I always want UCB to do well in bowl games to help the Pac-12's reputation, but just love it when UCB finds a way to look awful.
TCU had their third QB running the show as an excuse.   UCB's only excuse was...they are UCB.

Definite cult classic.  We found it at the end of the 1st quarter also.  I was watching more closely as my wife worked on her laptop.  I would yell any number of exclamations like "What?!", "You've got to be kidding," and "no f-ing way!"  My wife would look up and watch the replay.  We would be laughing and chant "Cheez It, Cheez It, Cheez It!"  It was so much fun.  I wanted to start an interception and punt drinking game, but we already had enough wine flowing and we would have ended up in the hospital if we drank that much.  Bonus points to the game because I have had a TON of fun teasing my Cal friends at work about it.  Much easier to tease them about that debacle than about our nine consecutive Big Game wins.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Finally, after all these years....the next time a Cal Weenie reminds me about "the Play," I have an effective comeback.  All I have to do is say "Cheeze-It."

RE: Ranking the bowls... - Beeg_Dawg - 01-02-2019

Absolutely the worst bowl season in my memory.  Too many bowls, bad matchups, star players not playing and just poor play.

I rank bowls this year as watchable (Texas v GA) to bad (Utah - MSU) to very bad (Stanford -Pitt) to unwatchable and should be banned in the future (Cal).

RE: Ranking the bowls... - oman - 01-02-2019

Well, just got back from the Sugar Bowl, which was awesome, but I'm biased.  I would have ranked it higher, but that's because Texas was certainly capable of throwing that away.

I liked the Sun, but when it and Michigan State/Oregon were going on at the same time, you had some hard football to watch.

If you have jumped on the "most bowls are meaningless" bandwagon, it makes sense that the Cheez-It bowl would be high on your favorite list. From the absurd name to the fact that it was a comedy of errors enhanced its attractiveness.
Also the fact that it didn't appear to take itself too seriously.

Amazing highlight reel - didn't catch the game so this was fun, and thanks for sharing. Reminds me of a women's tennis match between two poor servers - "you start with the ball, no, please YOU start with the ball!"

Also, what are the odds of 9 interceptions and yet zero pick sixes? Doesn't that seem incredibly improbable? The total yards gained during the three scoring drives combined was 82. Hilarious.

Hey 2006, if you only saw the highlights, I've got to fill you in on the end of regulation.  As I said earlier, you simply cannot make this up.  TCU got the ball deep in their own end with a couple minutes to go, and there was absolutely zero expectation that they could drive down to win.  But their RB ripped off a 33 yarder straight up the middle, and then their QB - who honest to God had a total of 8 yards of passing at that point- completed a pass to a teammate this time, a 15 yarder.   So TCU then got the ball down to Cal's 27, with a potential game winning 44 yard FG.  TCU sent out their kicker, whose name I noted because it was Bunce.   TCU then called time out, and Bunce got pulled off the field (a replay showed him taking off his helmet and tossing it down in disgust) as their other kicker was sent out.  Then Cal called a time out to ice the kicker, and the second kicker was pulled, and Bunce went back onto the field again.  WTF??  Hey Patterson, nice way to instill confidence in your kicker.
Of course he missed it.  What other result could have occurred?

More cumulative yards in interception returns than scoring drives?! SMH

Mea Culpa - Bruce Wang - 01-03-2019

I used to think the traditionalists opposing the playoff system were being a bunch of pearl-clutching fuddy duddies.  I was wrong; they were right.  At first the playoffs were amazing, but now I feel like the kid that ate too much Halloween candy.  Ruining the bowl games was an expected consequence.  What I failed to anticipate was all the players skipping the bowl games.  Also the bowl system either masked or prevented the concentration of talent in a small handful of schools.  Using the lure of the playoffs, the Bamas of the world get to pick their entire class from the sandlot first and then it's Ohio State's turn.  If it's Alabama and Clemson every year, people will lose interest.  Look no further than an article from ESPN defending Alabama v Clemson as being good for college football.  A classic example of the lady doth protest too much.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/25642948/alabama-clemson-part-iv-historic-college-football-playoff-national-championship

The NCAA needs to figure out ways to introduce parity. Self-serving idea #1: 4+2 format to give the non-power conference schools a chance and increase the probability that each power conference champion will get a chance.  Another self-serving idea reduce the number of scholarships.  This will spread the talent around with the added benefit of introducing greater incentive to keep scholar-athletes out of trouble and academically eligible.

RE: Ranking the bowls... - 2006alum - 01-03-2019

Embo, that's hilarious (slash pathetic). How do they not have their go-to kicker in place? And then to switch back again. I'm honestly not sure who more deserved to lose that game, but I am certain neither team deserved to win it. Wow.

This is almost certainly actually a result of the NFL's new bargaining agreement, which makes it much more important to get to the second contract sooner if you want to cash out of playing football. It's also likely one of those things that needed some players to break the dam for it to start, previously no one did it because no one did it. I doubt that the playoff really changed anything about the bowls, if anything the explosion in the number of them did that (which the playoff did nothing to affect).

I also don't think the playoff really affected the recruiting landscape at all. The last time we had a first-time champion was Florida in 1996!
