An underrated Shaw advantage -

The Shaw years have been marked by
overall consistency masking volatile performance -- that is, Shaw teams have scored a lot of points, prevented a lot of points from being scored, been strong runners, passers, been good at preventing the pass or the run, sacked a lot or not much at all. There is, however, one consistent advantage -- the team's consistent strength on special teams. Per Bill Connelly:

Yet so many fans who post thought a full time ST Coach was a waste.

Ironically, I'd wager this year actually brought his rank down a couple spots.
EDIT: Goodness, I'm glad nobody actually bet me on this...we were #8 this year in ST S&P+. Somehow. I have no idea how.
Toner was money this year, which helps.
Punt return unit was #49 in yards per punt return.
Punt return coverage unit was #27, allowing ~5 yards per punt return on average and just 1 TD, which is pretty good.
#20 in net yards per punt overall, which is also pretty good.
Kick return unit was #43 in yards per kick return.
OUR KICKOFF COVERAGE UNIT WAS DEAD LAST IN THE NATION. We allowed 33.2 yards per return (on only 5 returns, to be fair). This was ~2 yards more than second-to-last Georgia, and over 7 full yards more than third-to-last UAB. Absolutely dreadful. Hey, full-time ST coach, what's up with this one?
How in the world do the above numbers add up to #8????

That included a return after a safety against UCLA which skewed the percentage.

Only 5 returns is a clue

I wanted to focus on something else; he's always found a way to win eight or more games. Although we think of the team as an ok offensive team with a strong running game and an inconsistent defense, Shaw has managed to win with very good defenses (2012/2013), explosive offenses (2011, 2015), big play running offense (2017), a pass first offense with a weak running game (2018), a combination of "good enough" offense and defense (2014 and 2016).

Another way of saying this is Shaw just wins. Regardless the circumstances, he wins and he generally wins at a high level.

Punt return coverage that allowed any sort of return only 14 times in 68 punts is pretty good. 76 yards off 68 punts comes out to 1.1 return yards per punt.

How in the world can you call a collection of five football plays dreadful?
It's not even a sample, much less a representative one from which you can draw a conclusion.
