2019 Music Thread -
BostonCard - 01-24-2019
In an irregular tradition, Cardboarders have frequently shared what they have been listening to lately or what they like. I wish I had something to offer here, but I haven't heard a ton of great music of late. I like the new Imagine Dragons album, but that's not exactly a hidden gem.
So if anyone (@Hulk, for example) has any good suggestions, I'm all ears (no pun intended).

I went to concerts the last two weekends. Two weeks ago Joan Osborne Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne at the Fox in Oakland. First, if you haven’t been to the Fox go – it’s gorgeous. A tremendous venue. Bonnie Raitt is a treasure. She has not lost a step. Tremendous voice, good guitarist, excellent slide guitarist. Just terrific. Jackson Browne was pretty good as well. He was at his best playing “For a Dancer”. Osborne was fine. Of course I also had to sit through 20 minutes of Mickey Hart on a synthesizer making all sorts of bizarre and very loud noises. I’m a brobdingnagian Grateful Dead fan – but not even I could handle that. Wavy Gravy was the MC. I’m 60. I think I was under the average age.
Last Friday was The Infamous Stringdusters at the Fillmore. The best way I can describe them is “high speed Bluegrass.” Guitar, dobro, stand up bass, fiddle, banjo. All are tremendous musicians and all can sing. And they absolutely cooked. They do a fair amount of Dead covers, although they didn’t Friday. They did Don’t Think Twice it’s All Right, For What it’s Worth and a bunch of stuff I’ve never heard. I loved it. Again if you haven’t been to the Fillmore I highly recommend it. They have a lot of excellent acts there that are not particularly well known. 25 bucks. Only downside is you have to stand the entire time. No seating. But they do have a couple of bars where you can at least sit and relax a bit. As for the Stringdusters check them out on YouTube. Terrific stuff.
Second that.

i saw Jackson Browne many years ago, and i really enjoyed it. and i also like Imagine Dragons.
right now, my favorite band is The Killers (don't ask me why they chose that name, because i'll never know). i think Brandon Flowers is the best and most charismatic pop singer alive today.

The Killers were featured prominently in the music thread several years ago. The recommended song was “Shot at the Night”, which I know because I have all 91 recommendations from that thread in a Spotify playlist. I would share it if I could figure out how (probably will have to wait till I get back to my desktop).

It may be mainline as hell, but the new Mary Poppins movie has a terrific, old fashioned full orchestral movie score, with an overture and postlude, yet. The songs are quite a bit better in my opinion, than the original, which came close to ditties (except for the wonderful 'Chim-Chim-Cheree', in a minor key).
Also, why Justin Hurwitz's wonderful score for 'First Man' wasn't nominated for an Oscar defies me. It won the Golden Globe.

I started that extensive thread a few years ago. It revealed we have a couple passionate fans of the newer music.
I feel like I've become a weird kind of old fogy, in that I still love that playlist but no one has come along to move off The National, The Killers, and a handful of others off my list. Still love Song For Zulu for example.
Also been in an obsession fiction phase as I finally, finally, wrap up my novel, now flirting with 450 pages.
Which prompts this fiction favorite list:
To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee
The Fifth Business, Robertson Davies
Doses of John Irving; the stories as a whole don't work for me, but I love his bursts.
Anna Karenin (I have been told that adding the "a" is not proper)
In Cold Blood. To my tastes, of course, the greatest first page in literature, unless the honor goes to--
Lolita. staggering out of the blocks but then turns into a comedy
The Great Gatsby; lots of look what I can do by Fitzgerald but ingenious way to tell a story
I have tried to read Henry James and it does not read like the same English I use.
But my favorite author writes only nonfiction: John McPhee.
His pieces on the US Opens (golf) and The Headmaster and Oranges---wondrous to this read.
I can pass along the free access to his two golf pieces if anyone is interested;
Googling his name and golf should work for you even faster.

we also enjoyed the new Mary Poppins movie, we saw the original a couple days before we saw the new movie and it was fun comparing and contrasting them.

A new-ish band picking up a lot of steam right now is Greta Van Fleet; they just performed on Saturday Night Live last weekend, and are up for a few Grammies. They sound eerily similar to Led Zeppelin, including the vocalist!

Fun fact: their name comes from the music video for New Order's song 2001 "Crystal." The video features a fictional band named "The Killers." You can see the name displayed on the bass drum around the one-minute mark.

Really like the revivalists song, thanks!
Disturbed has a great remake of another song, but I forgot which one. the cover of Sound of Silence is amazingly haunting.
If you like metal covers of other songs, here’s a cover of Depeche Mode’s policy of truth, by Disown.

Thanks for reposting that. It got me to finally download the Spotify app and try it out. I've mostly used Pandora or my own CD collection up to now.

I recommended Open by Rhys, fwiw.
Re Brandon Flowers, intriguing guy: a Mormon who lives in Las Vegas and has released an inspired song and video in clear defiance of our acting President.
The Sounds of Silence contribution, accidentally of course, was so timely for me--so timely,
Three verses in there so relevant to my magnum opus, now flirting with 450 pages not countng end notes.
More art, less so much else we are suffering these days.
I notice my Kacey Musgraves song on the original list.
I doubt we have many current or potential Musgraves fan here;
I suspect part of her appeal to me is I think she's adorable.
But I love her Space Cowboy, months old now.
One of the best lyricists in music today.

You guys know I have to chime in on a music thread.
Somebody mentioned that Brandon Flowers is a Mormon. The three biggest rock bands of the millenium (defined as first commercial release after 12/31/1999 - which rules out Coldplay) by commercial and/or critical success are all fronted by Latter-day Saints: the Killers, Arcade Fire, and Imagine Dragons.
With the caveat that I love Greta Van Fleet's introductory EP, I thought this review of their first album is hillarious.
https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/greta-van-fleet-anthem-of-the-peaceful-army/
In terms of what's on heavy rotation on my iPhone.
Sunflower by Post Malone (from the new Spiderman animated movie - make sure you see it in the theater, will go down in history as the most important animated film since the original Toy Story).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApXoWvfEYVU
Mode Moderne - this is what I imagine Joy Division would have gone on to sound like had Ian Curtis not erased his map.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD06YxYUNj4
Oyahytt by The Coup, also from a movie (Sorry to Bother You - directed by the frontman of The Coup). I also love their song "The Guillotine" which sounds relevant to the times we live in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAxDgkVlve0
Harvest Moon (Neil Young cover) by Poolside. The Neil Young purists might gag, but I like this better than the original.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suWbFPaVoEA
Pink Lemonade by James Bay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE-gdNIL8WI
Tomorrow Never Came by Lana Del Rey. I'm sure Hulk's been grooving to this one. It has guest vocals by Sean Lennon and boy does he sound like his dad. I wonder if this wrote this as a sequel to "Tomorrow Never Knows" from Revolver.

That's interesting. I'd never heard that there was a disagreement.
I know that in Russian and I believe most Slavic languages they add an "a" onto the last name of a woman. Anna Karenina is Mrs. Karenin.
I suppose the argument is whether to follow English conventions when you translate the name.
I would say no, because if you could ask her what her name was she would say Karenina.
On the other hand, when English borrows a word from a foreign language, the original grammar rules commonly no longer apply. For example it's perfectly normal in California to say that you're headed up to the Sierras this weekend, when pedantically it should be the Sierra. "Sierra" means "mountain range" in Spanish.
On the third hand, most English speakers know enough to say Latina vs. Latino (though I've seen Latinx as a recent convention.)
But on the fourth hand, how many English speakers would say alumna/alumnae instead of alumni, or just alum?
Somebody stop me. I could go on all day...

Best new-ish music I've listened to recently (i.e. new to me): The Hygrades, a Nigerian funk group from the 70s. Apparently a super limited amount of their music has been preserved -- like five-six songs. It's fun.
Best new novel I've read: Anna Burns's Milkman, which focuses on a 20-year-old woman's attempts to evade an IRA hitman's sexual harassment (and accompanying communal rumormongering) in Northern Ireland during the troubles. It's a tough read, both in terms of subject matter and prose style. (I'm not happy calling the prose "stream of consciousness," but that's probably the closest commonly accepted phrase to hit on the style. It's very dense reading and the sentences tend to swerve in surprising directions. There's nothing particularly difficult on the level of vocabulary, nor are the metaphors or descriptions terribly poetic or purple in the acclaimed-fiction fashion. It's just packed with stuff going on. A fantastic book.)
