Today in opponent attrition - a record? - JustAnotherFan - 01-24-2019

This may be a record! USC early enrollee Bru McCoy enters NCAA transfer portal.

McCoy, the No. 27-ranked football prospect in the 2019 class out of Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, California), signed with USC in the early signing period on Dec. 19.

McCoy, who is coveted as a receiver but also played linebacker in high school, didn't make his commitment public until Jan. 5 at the U.S. Army All-America Game, but he had been signed for those few weeks.

Only days after McCoy made his choice known, USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury left to take the head-coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals. USC has not yet named a replacement for Kingsbury.

McCoy enrolled early and already has started classes on campus, so he would need to be released from the national letter of intent that he signed in December to transfer to another school.

They also appear to be losing 5 star WR Kyle Ford, and two Cal coaches turned them down for jobs.

What's going on at Heritage Hall?

Might have to do with them signing an offensive coordinator and then losing him to the NFL.

My comment was sarcastic. USC football is like a country with an Ebola outbreak these days. Nobody wants in, and everyone wants out. OK, that was sarcastic too, but seriously, the program is toxic because everyone knows Helton gonna be gone in 9 months and nobody wants the upheaval.

Because, honestly, what's going to happen, my little crystal ball here, you're going to recruit and sign an offensive lineman. Great, he's committed, his family's committed. He wants to come. He wants to be there. The O-line coach may get a coordinator job someplace else, may become a head coach someplace else, now you might talk about changing the offense with a new coordinator and new line coach. Well, he may not want to play in that new system, so now we've created a problem in December that we wouldn't have had in February because he wouldn't have signed to begin with.

So for me it's created more problems than I think many people are seeing that are going to happen. So for me, these are still young kids. This is not a legal document they sign on signing day. This is a general agreement that I think needs to happen as late as possible, because they're still kids and they still have the ability to change their minds.

It's almost uncanny, no.  I mean, how could his crystal ball have mixed up a wide receiver with an offensive lineman?

He already transferred to Texas.

Yup, but I was thinking about other places where his namesakes have succeeded. Well, at least with a broad definition of "succeeded".
