Fran Belibi - BosCard - 03-02-2019

I just read an article about Belibi after her latest dunk and one thing jumped out at me.  Most of the focus is on the dunking and her vertical (this Denver Post article reported it as 40 inches).  That is great.  However, what I took away from the article was her wingspan.  Wingspan is the measurement from fingertip to fingertip if a person's arms are outstretched and parallel to the ground.  NBA coaches like wingspan because players with long arms will more easily grab rebounds, block shots, steal passes and shoot over defenders.  This is Steve Kerr on wingspan:

"It's legit. It's much more important than your height.  If your wingspan is more than your height, that's kind of abnormal. Most of us have the same wingspan as our height. That's kind of a rule of thumb. A lot of basketball players don't, though, they have wider wingspans. And they're able to get their hands on balls or shots or loose balls. ... I'm a big believer in that."

Bleacher report had an article about what qualified as "freakish" (top 5%) wingspan in the NBA.  They took the ratio of wingspan to height and "freakish" was any wingspan that was 8.4% greater than height.

So what is Belibi's wingspan?  She is 6'1" tall and has a 6'8" wingspan.  Her ratio is 9.6%, so definitely "freakish" by male NBA player standards.  And what about just the absolute number?  Belibi has the same wingspan as Russell Westbrook!

And how does this translate to basketball?  In her senior year, she is averaging 12.3 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.5 blocks (along with 22.3 points).

Oh, and while I don't have a number for her, I did find this quote about Haley Jones, "She has an incredible wingspan and she uses her length effectively for defending, shot blocking and rebounding the ball."  In high school Jones is averaging 12.1 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 2.8 blocks (along with 26.4 points).

Watching her dunks really doubt Belibi’s fingertip is about 19” above the rim. Just doing the math So no not a 40” vertical. She’s amazing enough

It would be nice to see a female that actually jumps while playing basketball.  It's frustrating to watch NCAAW basketball because so often the players don't jump for rebounds and don't shoot real jump shots.  With a little height (6'1"+) and springs, a woman could dominate in NCAAW hoops.

The article BosCard is referring to: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/864549-nba-basketball-what-qualifies-as-a-freakish-wingspan-in-the-league

After "freakish" at 8.4%+, they qualify the "elite" wingspan tier at 6.4-8.39%.

KZ Okpala's ratio (6'9" with 7'2" wingspan) is 6.2%, falling just short of the elite tier. One of the reasons scouts like him.
Jaiden Delaire's ratio (6'8" with 7'2" wingspan) is 7.5%.
Bryce Wills' ratio (6'6" with 7'1" wingspan) is 9%.

No offense Marty, and Bob is way more polite than I am, but you just don't know what you're talking about. Our players jump - all of them. As do women in every other team I've seen. Literally the only player your statement applies to is Chantel Osahor of UW, and if anything, it was impressive that she could regularly chuck the ball from 5 feet behind the three point line and sink it. It worked impressively well for her. But everyone else jumps.

Currington appears to have an amazing leap, esp. for her size.  She pulls down rebounds someone of her height should not be getting.

I didn't mean to be offensive and upon re-reading my comments it sounds too strong.  But, very often I see the players standing under the basket with their feet planted firmly on the hardwood with their arms stretched high waiting for a rebound to come down.  I think they could work on using their springs a little more to get more rebounds.  Also, I would like to see more jump shots from the elbow.  I think the Hull sisters do a better job than most at using their jumping ability, and it shows in their rebounding stats.

Mitty upset in the Open semis last night. Another underperforming year in regards to their national ranking. Piedmont Hills wins.

Nationally fifth ranked boys Salesian loses too. Ditto De La Salle.

RE: Fran Belibi - BobK - 03-03-2019

It’s Pinewood vs Salesian for the NorCal title and winward loses so its Clovis West with a usc signee vs Sierra Canyon the school with celebrity parents

For the record Mitty lost 3 games. To Southridge with Brink to Grandview of Colorado who plays Belibi’s team Thursday and last night. Hell of a season.

In D 2 Nor Cal’s its Menlo coached by John Paye Against Menlo Atherton coached by Marisa Coleman.
