WBB: Stanford 79 UC Davis 54 - 81alum - 03-20-2019

Preview:

We opened the season against UC Davis and had a comfortable win, despite a tight first quarter.  I'd recommend you read my last preview and write-up since it has been so long since we played them.

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=16727&pid=234557&highlight=wbb%3A+Stanford+71#pid234557

Davis, whose coaches--in a friendly gesture--taught our coaches how to implement the Princeton, is 25-6 this year and is on a 16 game winning streak.  They have only lost once since December 2.  They beat common opponent Hawaii 58-50 to win the Big West championship last weekend.  They have played 6 NCAA tournament teams this year, including us.  Massey has them at 67, which is better than a few Pac 12 teams.

Their elite redshirt senior 6'4" forward Morgan Bertsch continues to lead the team, averaging 24 ppg.  Senior guard Courtney Eaton is shooting 46% of her treys this year and is making a couple a game, and they have another 40% shooter too, and a couple in the 30s who can get hot.  They are averaging 8 treys a game, which along with Bertsch makes for a great balance.

Davis is not to be taken lightly, given that their coaches are experts at how to stop the Princeton, given that they have played us before at Maples and their players have had that experience, given that they have been playing extremely well--16 wins in a row is not easy regardless of the level of play--and given that they can potentially have both inside and outside threats.  Last time our offense was so-so, but we beat them with defense.  Let's hope that continues.

Overview:

Much as I hoped, our defense throttled UC Davis in the first quarter, holding them scoreless for the first 6 minutes while we amassed 15 points.  That 15-0 start led to a 29-9 first quarter, and frankly we coasted the rest of the way, giving many players deep minutes.

Character of the game:

The game was far more lopsided than the final score indicates.  Alanna Smith played only 21 minutes, Dijonai Carrington just 23, and five backups played double digits.  The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters were actually competitive--Davis outscored us in the 4th 13-11--but only because Tara was giving so much time to players like Anna Wilson, Alyssa Jerome, and Jenna Brown.  There were plenty of pretty plays to ooo and ahh over, backwards bounce passes from Coffee to a cutting player for a layup, swooshing treys from professional range by Williams, a steal and layup by Smith, etc.  But the suspense was out of this game by the time we were six minutes in and leading 15-0.

Performances:

Alanna Smith led with 21 points in exactly 21 minutes.  Most impressively, she was 3/5 from three point range which is an excellent sign that perhaps he finger has healed and her long range shooting is back on track.

Kianna Williams contributed 19 points included 3/6 from long range, and a very impressive 5 assists to 0 turnovers.

Carrington had 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks for a normal stat filled line.  Plus she is always fun to watch.  She and Maya Dodson came out early to warm up on the stationary bikes.

Six more players scored, and there were a lot of nice contributions, but with the liberal substitutions it is hard to single anyone else out for special praise.  They all did their jobs well.  Coffee had 3 assists, Wilson had 2 steals, Lexie Hull had 7 rebounds.

As a team, we had 42 points in the paint to their 14, which tells much of the story.  They shot 29% and we shot 49%.  Enough said.

Conclusion:

On to BYU, which on paper is better than Davis but which for some reason does not seem very much more threatening to me.  But we need to take care of business--BYU is a team that beat Gonzaga three times this year.  Clearly they have something going for them.

Okay, now you've got me nervous.  Am I crazy to worry about Davis, or is it March madness?

That Massey rating, in this field, should be about a 13 seed.

The other 15 seeds: Mercer (127, playing Iowa); Towson (133, playing UConn); Portland State (106, playing Oregon).

14 seeds: Maine (88, playing NC State); New Mexico State (139, playing Iowa State); Fordham (81, playing Syracuse); Radford (123, playing Maryland).

13 seeds: FGCU (59, playing Miami); Boise State (54, playing Oregon State); Belmont (63, playing South Carolina); Wright State (70, playing Texas A&M).

12 seeds: Bucknell (77, playing Florida State); Rice (29, playing Marquette); Arkansas Little Rock (90, playing Gonzaga); UCF (32, playing Arizona State). Talk about variation in quality on one seed line - Marquette and Arizona State get screwed because the committee has problems seeding mid-majors.  Both Rice and UCF should probably be on the 8-9 line (for reference, Cal is 31.)  And two 12 seeds are rated below our 15 seed.

11 seeds: Quinnipiac (62, playing South Dakota State); Tennessee (45 , playing UCLA); Princeton (71, playing Kentucky); Missouri State (56, playing Depaul).

The NCAA's "bus before plane" rule really screws good mid-major teams that play near powers that host the first two rounds.  UCF is underseeded and playing ASU because Miami is hosting as a #4 seed.  Davis is underseeded because they can fill a spot at Maples.

So yes, Stanford is playing a more dangerous team than they should be. OTOH, BYU (44) and Auburn (38) are probably weaker than the other 7-10 combos: Drake-Missouri (26, 28); Texas-Indiana (22, 51); Rutgers-Buffalo comparable at 30-52.

BTW, one other reason to root for Rice, and be upset that they are underseeded.

Their best player, who won Conference USA Player of the Year, and her sister.  Their last name starts with "O."

Rice was so close down the stretch but Mulkey missed several shots in a row. EO finally took and hit a shot but too little too late. Kudos to them.

Before I bike over to the games, I thought I would try to answer your question.

I am a bit nervous, but that is probably a good thing, since hopefully it means that our team will be a bit nervous too and will take the game very seriously.  No doubt Davis has improved a great deal since we opened the season, but hopefully we have too.

The identity of our team in the fall was more our offense, and during our most successful spring stretch it has been defense.  If we play with enough energy and focus, I think we can smother their shooters.  Our offense may not be as pretty as we would like it to be given that the Davis players will know every move, but our talent and size should be enough to hold their scoring in check.  The one worry would be if someone we don't expect gets hot from three point range.  We can shut down their inside game and a couple of shooters, but our perimeter defense might break down if they have three people making treys.  That is a distinct possibility, but I thing our defense against static three point shooters has been terrific lately.  The shooters who get us are the ones who--like Ionescu--can also drive and dish.  I don't think Davis has those kinds of shooters.

A quick tidbit.  I had one eye on the ESPN2 halftime coverage (UCLA up by 12 over Tenn at the half) and the "exit" background shot was a photo of Jennifer Azzi in action from our glory days.  Hopefully a good omen!

assuming we win today, does anyone know the likely time of the round 2 game on monday?

My educated guess is either 4, 6 or 6:30 p.m. PDT - those were the latest tipoff times for Weekend 1 Monday games last year, and we and Oregon State are the only two schools hosting in the Pacific time zone, so I assume they'll assign them to those two host sites. FWIW, last year we were the 6 p.m. game, although both Oregon and Oregon State had Friday/Sunday schedules, so we were the only west coast host site with a Monday game. I'm hoping so, anyway, as those are also the only times I'd be able to attend, provided we win today!

I’m at Maples and can’t get Espn channels (xfinity) but could get pac12.  Anyone else having similar issues?  Anyone know if espn can require Stanford, at&t to block it?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UC Davis Saturday 2:30pm - M T - 03-23-2019

If we get by Davis, we will have BYU.  They have good discipline & good movement. A thin 6’7” post that is perhaps a little better than Shannon.  She was reaching over people so she could get into foul trouble. Their 3pt shooting in today’s game was nothing special. They were always in a zone so that could give us some problem. They didn’t seem that quick. Pick & rolls and timed breaks to the basket seemed their best offense. No one seemed able to dribble drive except when the defense was out of position.   Their play at the end of the game was suspect. Under pressure on an inbounds after a FG, they got the ball to their post at the foul line. They did ok against a press but the post made some dangerous passes and lost the ball twice in the last 3 minutes.

I had that at first, but I killed and restarted the ESPN app, and that let me log in again, and I could get all the games.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UC Davis Saturday 2:30pm - 2006alum - 03-23-2019

Can't ask for more than an 11-0 start!

29-9 at end of 1Q. Great Ball movement, great defense, Williams especially is on fire. Loving what I'm seeing!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UC Davis Saturday 2:30pm - Griffins78 - 03-23-2019

D’Jonai and Kiana are having great games. D’Jonai is dominating. Tara has gone deep on the bench with 10 players playing and contributing significantly. Thrilled when Anna’s first 3 went in. no hesitation. Back door cuts have been masterful.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UC Davis Saturday 2:30pm - 2006alum - 03-23-2019

Nice win today with plenty of rest for our starters to keep them fresh for Monday. Smith is insanely efficient - she had 21 points and 7 rebounds in 21 minutes - a point per minute on the floor. She also joined the Stewwie-Maya-Delle Donne club of 1600 pts, 200 blocks, 150 treys, and got her shooting percentage back up to .400 from behind the arc. Both Carrington and Williams were playing with tremendous confidence, and we got some great contributions from both Hulls and Jerome, Coffee, and Wilson off the bench. Really nice win with a little dip in the fourth quarter when we went two levels of bench deep into our rotation.

Monday game time is 8 p.m. PDT, so should enable a good home crowd attendance!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UC Davis Saturday 2:30pm - qwerty49 - 03-23-2019

All 6 Pac-12 teams are still alive; it's actually possible that all 6 could get to the Elite Eight.  However 3 of them (Cal, ASU, UCLA) play higher seeds next.

Both UCLA and Cal looked pretty good at times today.  UCLA started out great against Tenn, gave back a 17-pt lead, then pulled away at the end.  Cal was down 9 early to UNC, but came back strong and won going away.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UC Davis Saturday 2:30pm - chrisk - 03-23-2019

The Monday game vs BYU will be the only game on ESPN2 at 8pm PT.
The other 7 games are at either 4 or 6pm PT and share ESPN.

I finished my write up at the top and posted the preview for BYU in another thread.  Another fine day for Stanford WBB.
