Working from home this afternoon so watching some hoops. UC Irvine impressive right now, with Mr. Cartwright with 10 points right now, and some darn good hustle. I wish him all the best, yet am wondering how we move him to the end of the bench and now he is on a good team "dancing".

UCI is the last team from CA left alive in the tournament, too. Only 2 made it in.

And Russell Turner is UCI's coach. Has now won 31 games this season.

Well, if Cartwright is going against the Ducks, I'm an Anteater fan this weekend.

Congrats to him and to Oregon (and to Washington). Nice to see some former Stanford players (Cartwright and Travis) and PAC-12 teams thriving in what has been a desultory year for both Stanford and the PAC-12. Just a shame that Cartwright and Travis are getting their first taste of tournament play in a different jersey... Hate to think they had to go elsewhere to thrive, and that the current staff either wouldn't or couldn't have them stay.

Also a former Stanford coach's team handled VCU.

Former Stanford assistant coach Bruce Pearl’s Auburn Tigers are up 40-23 vs Kansas with 5mins to go 1H.
51-25 at the half!
I still remember him in his light gray suit and red tie waving a towel wildly over his head to get the “crowd” fired up.

Didn’t Bruce pearl get into some hot water while he was the head coach of Tennessee?

Honestly, though I've watched several games over the last couple of days, I just looked at the bracket for the first (!) time this morning. My only reaction is that today's game against Dook will certainly be interesting, to say the least....

Yup - a number of issues led to his firing in 2011, then the NCAA imposed a 3 year show-cause penalty on Pearl. His UT assistant coaches were assessed 1 year penalties.

Just a reminder that Pearl was an assistant to Tom Davis at Stanford

Yes, I believe this subtrhread started when jjj wrote something to the effect of “former Stanford assistant coach Bruce Pearl...”
A former assistant with us under Harbaugh also got into hot water this last year at Maryland. Our coaches and assistants are not inherently more nobl than elsewhere. We just hope we have better institutional controls and a better incentive structure but even then, it’s not like that made a difference in the sailing program.

that's why we have the right to disown any former coach if they do bad things after leaving Stanford. Undergrads--at least those who graduate from Stanford -- we own forever, but when coaches change schools we can be selective in who we claim. It says so right in the official "I Want It To Be So" rulebook.

Cartwright and the Anteaters are hanging with the Ducks with 14 minutes to go!

I was one of the assistant managers under Bruce Pearl his first year at Stanford. He was a PITA then. He also seemed kind of sleazy. Turned out that first impressions were correct. But he was a perfect fit for the sleazy business of college recruiting.
Here is another story from his dishonorable history -

However (a big however), the guy learned how to coach. Bruce Pearl has been a winner at every coaching job he has had from Southern Indiana to Wisconsin-Milwaukee to Tennessee and Auburn. He's still a lousy person and I am fine with him not being associated with Stanford.
