Softball: Stanford at Cal Game 3 - Viking_Guy - 03-25-2019

Starts off like game 2 ended.

Conley on the mound. Single by Cowles, then a groundball to the right side by Klingaman is picked up by the 1B.  With no play at second, she tosses the ball to the 2B covering first - who misses the bag on a routine play (? I didn't have the sound on, but that's what it looked like.)  So Cal's coach rearranges her alignment, shifting three players around. Inouye singles to right, then a sac fly to center. A groundball to short leads to a bad throw, 2 runs in. Grounder to short brings in Burks from 3B.

Dwyer got the first two in the bottom of the frame, then a really nice snag by Burks at 1B to end the inning.

4-0 good gals.  Showery, but nothing really heavy - an occasionally smattering of raindrops thus far.

I was too sanguine about the rain.  It's pretty steady drizzle right now, which has delayed the game for more than an hour thus far.  The other issue is the heavy clouds are making it pretty darned dark.

But I hope they get it in, or play under continuation rules.  It would be a shame to have to start this one over at some point.

Darn

Sorry to say the game has been called and there will be no makeup.

RE: Softball: Stanford at Cal Game 3 - d4cohn - 03-25-2019

Everyone at Cal knew the weather report with regards to consistent rain in the afternoon for the past several days now;
this game really should have been played yesterday as a doubleheader. Or they should have canceled the game prior
to Stanford traveling all the way to Berkeley for fewer than 1 1/2 innings. The game also could (and should) have been made up,
as opposed to a (relatively) random mid-week non-conference game, but it seems there was perhaps not a lot of incentive on Cal's part
to make up a 4-0 game that was clearly trending away from the Bears.

At least the series goes in the books as a sweep for Stanford. Congrats to the team and coaches on some great play this weekend;
the sweep was certainly well deserved and well earned.

Does Cal not have lights? Is that why there wasn’t a a double header on Saturday or a longer rain delay last night?

Yes, MT pointed out that there are no lights at Cal's stadium. However, a doubleheader could have been managed on Saturday or Sunday,
if the first game was played before 2:00pm/2:30pm. Say, 11:00am first pitch for Game #1 and then 2:00/2:30pm for Game #2 (which wouldn't conflict with Pac-12 TV broadcast).

Cal hosts non-conference tournaments and NCAA regionals at their stadium, so they have managed to play more than one game in a day.

We are getting closer to a Top #16 seed projection in projected brackets. This week, we come in at #19 on the S-Curve,
with a regional assignment to Lubbock, Texas to play Texas Tech.

We are also now ranked #24 in ESPN.com's poll, to go along with a #18 RPI ranking and a #20 Massey ranking.

Cal has plans to completely re do their stadium. Including lights and changing the location of home plate

I hope they move the other bases too. Otherwise it would be confusing.
