OT: Farhan’s moves today -

Optioned Suarez. Traded Chris Stratton who was out of options. No experienced spot starter among 12 active. Suarez will probably be first callup if a starter gets hurt or is ineffective in the first month.
Only three OF’s on active roster. Parra will join for opener. Seven INF’s so one will go. Three catchers, one to be sent away. 12 active roster pitchers. Vincent will probably be added.
So three or four more to released or optioned. No big names signed or traded for yet. Sandoval on the bubble.

I’ll give the guy at least a season and a half before passing judgment. He really doesn’t have much to work with.

Bottom up. He’s building some minor league depth. Williamson was on the bubble I think - in fact I think he may have been released. Except he just got hit on the wrist with a fastball don’t know how bad it is, but the Giants can probably put him on the DL. I think Solarte is going to start the left-field opening day. Reed and Joe will make the 25. So your outfield consists of Parra, Duggar, Reed and two utility players. Beyond awful.
This is going to be a truly bad baseball team this year. I’m just hoping they can develop a couple young players build up their farm system. I had them at 68- 94. I think that’s optimistic. I think they lose 100 games. This is going to be at least a two year rebuilding job.
Their only trade value players are Bumgarner if he pitches well before the break and Will Smith. Other than that they don’t have much to deal.
Posey looks like a shell of what he was. He won won rookie of the year Most Valuable player batting title , gold glove, six time all star, and was the face of the franchise for three titles. He probably is Hall of Fame if he quits right now. But I don’t see him being a top flight hitter again.
He should’ve been shut down in May last year. I’m still pissed off that they kept running him out their last year what he obviously was badly hurt.

Sandavol and Melancon both on the roster. Hanson and Williamson are not. So much for change.

Williamson never came back after that concussion. He could have been the missing piece in LF.

Pretty discouraging; he had that one great week to give us all hope but then never was able to recapture that magic. Now 28, not surprising that he is no longer in their long term plans.
I know a lot of fans want to give up on Melancon but I am glad they have not. Apparently they owe him $$$ either way so why not see if he is able to regain his form; it is not like he is the difference between a contender and an also-ran; if he finds it again, then trade him or one of the other relievers; if he doesn't, let him go once someone younger establishes pitches their way out of Sacramento.

or Ryder Jones?
And frankly, I think Stanford's own Austin Slater will turn it around. He had a fine 2017, a really good first half to 2018, then not so good second half...but his last week was very strong.

Optioned to the minors. Lack of creativity on offense and poor play calling; unwilling to adapt. . . .

Solarte can hit. I was surprised SD let him go. I think we’ll see him on the field a lot. He’s 31 and probably has at least 2 more decent years in him.

A few years ago I had a job interview with the Dodgers to join their analytics team.
Which means that I had a few chats with Farhan.
I still have his phone number in my contacts in my phone. I have no idea if he's changed it since then. (I kind of assume that high profile people have to cycle phone numbers - but maybe the number is still valid.)
So I guess in theory I could complain to the source.

maybe some significant changes coming to MLB.....testing underway in the Atlantic League
Quote:The drawbacks of MLB as it exists today—or, at least, the drawbacks as understood by the league itself—are visible in the Atlantic League’s alterations. The notion that pitchers must face three batters, or reach the end of an inning, before they are removed addresses the fatigue that fans feel when waves of relievers prolong the ends of games. Requiring two infielders to be on each side of second base effectively eliminates the analytics-informed infield shifts that, over the past decade, have turned would-be hits into easy outs. The elimination of all mound visits, except in the case of injury or a pitching change, kills some measure of baseball’s ample downtime; ditto the between-innings break being cut down from two minutes and five seconds to a minute and 45 seconds. The most extreme change—moving the mound back by two feet—will go into effect only for the second half of the Atlantic League’s season

I say adopt George Carlin's idea to put land mines in the outfield. But instead of actual mines, use (organic) paint mines.
Seriously, what a f-ing joke. I hate all these rule changes other than reducing time between innings.
Why not limit warm-up pitches to two pitches for pitching changes? Pitchers are throwing in the bullpen to get warmed up for a reason, right? They should be ready when they come out to take the actual mound.

Something crawled under my front porch and expired. Nasty, nasty smell. Went to look, and it was the SF Giants.
Bumgarner pitched well. SF gave up two runs. Rest of it was horrid. SF had five hits. OF and 1B had no hits and one walk. Bad-field-terrible-arm LF cuts off great-field-strong-arm to catch a flyball with men on base.
Ugh.

It took the Giants 5 hits and a walk to earn 6 bases. The Dodgers earned 32 bases on 8 swings.
How many games for Giants to hit 8 HR? 15?
RE: OT: Farhan’s moves today -
Phogge - 03-28-2019
27 games.

I'm going to take small solace in the fact that the Giants struck out only five times. They struck out 1,467 times last year, a team record and an average of 9.05 strikeouts per game. That isn't saying much, however, MLB teams struck out an average of 8.48 times per game last year. The problem is that other teams enjoyed a power surge (Yankees hit 267 HRs, Dodgers hit 235, Giants hit 133 -- second worst in majors.
Everyone knows Oracle Park is a pitcher's dream. The Giants only scored 3.72 runs per game, 14th of 15 NL teams; but their pitching only gave up 699 runs, or 4.31 runs per game, which was middle of the pack -- 15th among 30 MLB teams. If the Giants' pitching staff can improve by .6 runs per game, that would put them at 3rd among MLB teams.
The Giants won the World Series scoring 665 runs in 2012 and 697 runs in 2014. They scored 606 last year. At least two outfielders would have to emerge, Belt would have to keep in form, Panik would have to return to his first two All-Star years -- and based on spring training, he might. Crawford and Posey looked terrible in spring training, just terrible. They both got old very quickly. Hopefully the Giants bring up Burt, who hit very well in spring training. Bumgarner looked very good, I thought, with nine strikeouts. Longoria was 2 for 4, that was promising.
That outfield is a mess, though. P...U...
Hope springs eternal. Game tonight at Petco, 7:10. Giants outfielders are batting 6, 7, 8. Wonder when the last time that happened? Derek Holland starts.

Bum should be playing left. He is the team’s best power hitter and that is not a joke.

This outfield, with Derek Holland as #2 starter - it's like 1984 all over again. Oh wait, make that 2017.
