USMNT vs Chile: Baird starting - SamuelMcF - 03-26-2019

With the other thread about the women's side, I thought it would be only fair to acknowledge the men. Game is just about to kick off, 5pm PST.

Corey Baird is the starting striker. Jordan Morris is on the bench. Probably the first time Stanford has had multiple alumni on the US Men's senior team since...ever?

I suspect actually it's happened before -- too busy to check but Brandon Vincent and Jordan Morris were probably on the team at the same time.

Sadly Baird was pretty much universally panned for his performance. Sadly he looks a bit like a quadruple-A player -- has some obvious plusses (his movement without the ball is national-team level, he has solid ideas, his athleticism is passable) but he wasn't able to physically perform the ideas, can't consistently beat defenders on the dribble, and screwed up a bunch close to goal. He may not be good enough for this level, and he'll have to improve a lot to be a national-team caliber starter. Fortunately Baird seems like a very hard worker and has greatly exceeded expectations already.
