WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - 81alum - 03-26-2019

Preview:

Missouri State is the Cinderella team in our bracket, being an 11 seed that defeated 6 seed DePaul 89-78 and then 3 seed Iowa State 69-60.  MS defeated Iowa State on the IS home court in front of 5809 rabid opposing fans.  The Iowa State press conference showed stunned and tearful seniors whose season ended much sooner than they expected.   Iowa State, which is normally a high percentage three point shooting team, simply went cold for one night.  They were 2 of 17 from beyond the arc. We know we are also capable of going cold form beyond the arc.

Massey has Missouri State as 28.  To put that in perspective, Utah is 34 and USC is 35.  Missouri State has relatively balanced scoring distributed between four players.  They are led by 5'10" senior point guard Danielle Gitzen with 13 ppg, and who shoots 40% of her three point shots.  6'2" junior guard Alexa Willard has almost identical points, and the two forwards are 6'1" and 6'2", including  freshman Jasmine Franklin.  She seems highly skilled for a relatively short forward, shooting 56%, scoring 9 points and 8 rebounds per game and leading her team in both blocks and steals.

MS is  25-9, but have only lost twice since Gonzaga got them on December 16.  Basically, they lost a lot early and then got a whole lot better.  Before the NCAAs, the only currently ranked team they played was Drake, who they beat 2/3 times.   They are 41st nationally in offense, and 136th nationally in defense, 52nd nationally in fg%, 79th in 3pt fg%. This does not look scary on paper--except they are beating highly ranked teams lately.

They do have the first two rounds available on ESPN replay so it is easy for fans to scout them.  The played mostly man against Iowa State.  Hard for me to tell how effective their defense really was, and how much of it was Iowa State just shooting open shots poorly.

Overview:

Williams was 0/11 from three point range, and the team shot a season worst 25%, but somehow our defense found a way to bludgeon our way to an ugly victory.  Anna Wilson is the heroine of the day with a season best 11 points, which is the equivalent of a 20 point game on a normal day.

Flow of the Game:

What flow?  The game was very simple.  We had 4 bad offensive quarters in a row, but Missouri State had 4 worse quarters.  Alanna Smith got into foul trouble and sat for much of the 2nd half.  As the three point misses mounted and mounted, MS sat in a zone and dared us to shoot from outside, clogging the interior.  Through it all we kept a lead which varied from a high of 13 to as few as 4 late in the fourth quarter.  In the second half of the fourth quarter we couldn't buy a basket, but we did make 6 free throws.

When interviewed before the 4th quarter, Tara was quite pleased with our defense but obviously displeased with our offense.  I see no reason to disagree with Tara.

Performances:

Anna Wilson had one of her best games today, and that deserves to be singled out.  She has been repeatedly brought in for her defense, and it was very good as usual.  With her brother looking on, Wilson scored 11 on 4/7 shooting, playing 21 minutes.

Alanna Smith scored 13 in 25 minutes on 3/7 shooting, but 7/10 free throws.  She only took (and missed) one outside shot, and they were clearly hammering her inside.

Williams and Carrington were a combined 5/28.  Dodson was 0/4.  Lacie Hull was 0/2.  Lexie Hull was 2/10.

Coffee was 3/7 including a much needed trey.

As a team, we kept our turnovers down to 12, got 20 offensive rebounds, and matched Missouri State's 25% shooting with 25% of our own.

Conclusion:

Never have I seen such uninspiring win.  But it is a win.

Now we take on Notre Dame, and I pray they don't beat us by more than Oregon did mid season.  For us to be competitive we will need to hit nearly all our shots while continuing to play inspired defense.  3/29 three point shooting in front of what amounts to a Notre Dame home crowd would lead to a wipe out of historic proportions.  Let's hope that our players have amnesia and tonight's misses are forgotten rapidly and don't carry over.

New Nike’s and see Carrington in a boot. Now I know from experience it doesn’t mean she couldn’t play tonight if needed

Oh, wow.  Even if she's ok to go, it might mean reduced time.  She played 32 minutes on Monday.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Missouri State Saturday 3:30 ESPN2 - 2006alum - 03-27-2019

Yikes. Although I wonder if Stanford would have posted that if it's serious - wouldn't that be giving the opposing team scouting intel? Doesn't seem like Tara would be down with that.

Also, relatedly, the Lady Vols just fired Holly Warlick and the rumor is Jeff Walz is actively campaigning for the job. Could be a sea change among the top programs next season, esp. with Notre Dame losing at least four and possibly all five of their starters.

Meanwhile, I can't wait for Nerd Nation to become Dunk Nation. =D

Considering how DeJonai has been playing, maybe those boxes have boots for everyone on the team.
Like swimming in drag suits, or running with ankle weights.

I actually was wondering if Tara has been trying to reduce wear and tear on Carrington during the last part of the season.  She routinely has been getting fewer minutes than Williams or Smith, and she goes out of games even some times when they are in doubt.  It could just be that with her aggressive play style Tara wants to reduce the chance she will get injured.  She always has a couple of plays a game when I can almost hear a football announcer saying "Carrington the ball carrier..."

Then again, it may be that as good as Carrington has been this year, there are more reasonable alternatives available in her position than there are for Williams or Smith.  It is a second Hull or Anna Wilson coming in behind her, usually.

I do hope she is fully healthy.  Too many bad memories of Jayne, Karlie etc. not being their usual selves at the end of the season.

The ESPN crew picks us over Missouri State 4-0.  That seems dangerous to me.

"The Lady Bears have had the luxury of playing two teams (DePaul and Iowa State) with a similar style in the opening two rounds. Stanford will play inside-out. How Missouri State handles the Cardinal's size and length will determine how competitive the game is. -- Charlie Creme"

I know our play in the BYU game didn't exactly inspire confidence, but ESPN had unanimous picks in every Sweet 16 matchup (they picked the higher seed in each one) except the NC State-Iowa game, where the majority went for the upset, so I wouldn't put too much stock into that.

Though Nell Fortner seems to think that Missouri State has a good shot of beating us.

If we shoot the ball well and play good defense (esp. from long range, in our four losses this year, we gave up +40% shooting percentage, including two +60% efforts from Gonzaga and Oregon), then I have confidence we will win.

I come in peace. Looking forward to a great game on Saturday. This writer got a few things wrong about Missouri State. First, this isn't our first NCAA appearance since 2001. It's our first appearance in the Sweet 16 since 2001, when we beat #1 Duke and advanced to our second Final Four. We made the NCAAs five times since then, but have not advanced past the first round until this year.

Second, the Lady Bears did not lose 7 of their 8 last games. A team with one senior and one active junior started the season 1-7, and then went on a 24-2 tear to reach the Sweet 16 as a #11 seed.

We Lady Bear fans have tremendous respect for your program and look forward to a great game on Saturday in Chicago.

Welcome to the Cardboard Letsgo!

Yes, I noticed that odd way that Michelle Smith described your won/loss record.  She made it seem as if you finished the season 1/7 when you started your season 1/7.  Hopefully I got it right in my preview.   But any way you look at it, your team is very impressive to have improved so much since the early season.  It reminds me a little of our team last year, that had a very rough start before going on to a good season.

What do you attribute the turnaround to?  Did you just install a new system that took a while to master?  Or some new players?  Going 1/7 and then following up by going 22-2 is a phenomenal change.

Great question, but I can speculate. First, the team is extremely young and we had several close/OT losses to start the season as you would expect with a young team (@Wichita, @Mizzou, vs. Gonzaga, vs. South Dakota). For whatever reason, after we hung with Gonzaga until the final horn, coach said she saw a light bulb come on with the team and they figured out how to play with confidence and how to close out games.

Second, our team leader and lone senior, Danielle Gitzen, emerged to lead the team, both on and off the court. The chemistry was almost instant. As the wins kept piling up to close the OOC season, including winning an exempt tourney on a neutral court, and the conference win streak kept going, confidence just kept building. A mid-winter road sweep of Drake (which snapped a 47-game MVC streak for them) and Northern Iowa had the team feeling that it could compete with anyone, and that confidence has translated into the postseason as well.

The competition has escalated from beating Drake in the MVC finals, to DePaul in the first round, to Iowa State in the second round. We realize Stanford will present the biggest challenge we've faced all year. So far this team has risen to every challenge in the post-season, but it's clear you all will present much different stylistic and matchup challenges for us. I'm excited to see how we game plan for you.

Missy Barlow is calling the UCLA-UConn game in Albany tonight so presumably she will not work in Chicago tomorrow.

UCLA leads 46-42 late 3rd quarter.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Missouri State Saturday 3:30 ESPN2 - qwerty49 - 03-29-2019

And then there were two.

UConn outfinishes UCLA in the 4th Q, too bad.

ASU tried to play maul ball on Teaira McCowan, but just gave way to Miss St

OreSt really never in it, just no offense against Louisville

Oregon finally surging on SoDak State, thanks to the Jackrabbits shooting about 20%.

And us.

So after tomorrow there will either be one or two Pac-12 teams in the Elite Eight.

Looking at the box scores of each game, the Pac-12 teams, even Oregon, struggled noticeably with shooting the ball:

UCLA shot 31.3% from the field and 27% from 3-pt range (6/22)

ASU was 36.4% and 28.6% (6/21)

Oregon State was 30.4% and a frigid 9.1%(!) (2/22)

Oregon shot a decent 43% from the field, but even the Ducks were pretty off from long range at just 20% (4/20)

Individually, the top 3-point shooters in the Pac-12 had a collectively awful day:

The Bruins' Dean (35.2% season) was 1/11

ASU's Ekmark (36%) was 2/11

Oregon State's Goodman (39.4%) was 1/6, Slocum (36.8%) was 0/4 and McWilliams (36.2%) was 0/3

Oregon's Boley (43.8%) was 0/5, Sabally (41.2%) was 1/6 and Ionescu (42.5%) was 1/4

Here's hoping we got our cold shooting out against BYU and discontinue this trend tomorrow!

Fascinating observation.  I hope you are right.  On the other hand, three point shooting is usually lower at away games than at home games, and all those teams but UCLA were playing away for the first time in the tourney.  Plus as we all move up against better competition, fewer and fewer three point shots will be completely open.

What I noticed was not just that the three point shots were not falling, but that all the games were pretty low scoring in general.  Even Oregon only scored 63 and UConn managed 69.  Defense is outpacing offense at this level.  I don't know what that bodes for our chances--but whatever it means for our chances, it doesn't win a lot of converts to WBB.

Griffins78 - Griffins78 - 03-30-2019

Good observations and good point about away games and better defense. I also think there is nerves and stress that comes with one and done (for the season and for some for life) nature of the NCAA Tournament. There were lots of open 3s and out backs or layups that they generally make that this time they did not. Oregon missed so many shots around the basket.

I think one of the keys is as Tara said, “relax” and play with confidence on offense. Difficult to do, especially when the game is aggressive and physical and they’re taking away your first and second options.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Missouri State Saturday 3:30 ESPN2 - 2006alum - 03-30-2019

Well, the good news is that the team's Sweet Sixteen practice video shows Carrington bootless, taking shots, and running around on the court, so that boot must be precautionary.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Missouri State Saturday 3:30 ESPN2 - Jskass - 03-30-2019

We are in Portland and were SHOCKED by the combinations of the bunnies that were missed and Boley’s uncharacteristically poor three point shooting. Lots of air balls. In fact, at one point in the game my husband and I concurred that the game felt as though the two teams were playing at altitude.

MS State? They were fine because ASU was just no match and the “maul ball” completely ineffective except that Howard should have been T’ed up after her fourth foul.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Missouri State Saturday 3:30 ESPN2 - 81alum - 03-30-2019

Notre Dame edged past A&M.  The winner of the Stanford Missouri State game with take on Notre Dame on Monday.  Ogunbowale had 34 points, and Carter for A&M had 35.  They both seemed unguardable, Plum-like.
