Softball-vs. Oregon - d4cohn - 03-29-2019

Game #1 underway from The Farm.

Ugh. An ugly start to an important series at home. Carolyn Lee gives up a grand slam on 0-2 pitch to #6 hitter.

Stanford then strands first and third one out.

Cardinal in big big hole already.

RE: Softball-vs. Oregon - d4cohn - 03-29-2019

Stanford claws 2 back, but 6 stranded runners the difference so far.

Cardinal trailing 4-2 to the Ducks through 3.

Stanford notches another run, as they seem to be starting to figure out Jordan Dail. 4-3 going to T5.

Teaghan Cowles with a line-drive HR to pull Card within 1.

RE: Softball-vs. Oregon - d4cohn - 03-29-2019

Stanford comes all the way back to take an 8-6 lead! Oregon's coach makes an mind-boggingly
silly decision to pull her starter after only giving up a leadoff walk (albeit she had thrown 98 pitches). However, the reliever she brought in, who sports an ERA
8.00+ and has struggled to even record outs against most competition, only records 1 out, forcing
the Oregon coach to turn back to her original starter.

Five runs later, Card take the lead.

And Stanford takes advantage of a 1st year Oregon HC's ill-advised decision (sound familiar :) ) to win Game #1 8-6!
Card improves to 24-4 on the season, and 3-0 in Pac-12 play.

It was great to get the win, though Stanford's struggles in the circle against Pac-12 competition worries me (even if the offenses are really good this year). Carolyn Lee allowed 3 HR's today, including a grand-slam on an 0-2 pitch (which frankly cannot happen, and nearly ended the game before it really started). Stanford also stranded 12 baserunners today, which also nearly cost them. It is nice to see that we can still win playing a relatively poor game. However, today's game shows that any team can win in the Pac if you don't bring your best.

RE: Softball-vs. Oregon - d4cohn - 03-30-2019

Game 2 is off, unfortunately, to an even worse start than yesterday. Another grand slam, followed by a
solo shot, gives Oregon an early 5-0 lead.

However, the Oregon starter today has struggled mightily this season, so the scoreboard operators might
be very busy today.

Stanford and Oregon trade runs in the 2nd. 6-1 Ducks through 2.

Stanford gets one back, but they are running out of time. 6-2 heading to T6.

Cardinal going to drop their first Pac-12 game of season. Oregon adds 1 in T6,
then Stanford strands 2nd and 3rd to trail 7-2 heading to T7.

Hopefully, we can put this game behind us tomorrow, because it hasn't
been a very good showing all-the-way around.

Stanford plays probably its worst game of the season, as Oregon leads wire-to-wire
and steals Game #2 7-2. The offense and pitching was poor today, and Oregon
came out and played like a hungry and desperate team.

RE: Softball-vs. Oregon - BobK - 03-30-2019

I was only there for three innings then WBB but Oregon was very impressive. Actually especially on defense

I agree Bob that Oregon came out playing hungry and took it to us. But the pitching is worrying me,
especially with a monumental game tomorrow (we really need to win tomorrow and win this series;
we cannot afford to lose one at home, particularly to a team that will not be playing in the postseason
in all likelihood). With the early HR's, it is putting us in holes that aren't always recoverable (as it was today).

Oregon showed their offensive talent in the non-conference, but hitting batters with 0-2 counts, and giving up
grand-slams with 0-2 counts is on us. Maddy left some pitches elevated, and that is playing with fire against
competition like this.

RE: Softball-vs. Oregon - d4cohn - 03-31-2019

Stanford's pitching struggles have continued in Game #3 against the Ducks.
Oregon drops 2 in 1st, followed by 3 in the 3rd to take a 5-0 lead.

Oregon has played great this weekend, but this would be a disappointing
home series loss, if the Cardinal are not able to manage a comeback.

Stanford might not be done yet. Emily Young connects on a two run HR to left;
Card have two on now with two outs. Teghan Cowles coming to plate,
with Oregon forced to turn to a pen that has been pretty ineffective for most of year.

Stanford leaves the bases loaded. Stanford will have three innings to get three more back;
5-2 Ducks.

Nice comeback from a 5-run deficit! And another series win.

Unbelievable Terry! The offense delivers yet again. The pitching is still really worrying me
(particularly since Oregon had struggled mightily on offense against UW and UA), but
give the game ball today to Kiana Pancino. I really think she should get consideration
for the Saturday start, as she pitched fantastically well both on Friday and Sunday.

Great to get a series win when we didn't have our best stuff in the circle, but we are going
to have to play a lot better starting next week against Oregon State, as well as against Arizona State
and the top 3 in Pac (UA, UW, and UCLA). A performance like this against those 5 will get us beat,
probably pretty badly too.

RE: Softball-vs. Oregon - BobK - 03-31-2019

Hard for Pancino to go thru the lineup twice. So maybe not a starter.
I was impressed by several Oregon hitters and there infield fielding. Great game to see

Jessica has the team believing in them selves. Love to see the aggressiveness on the bases

I know Bob, but she was a very effective starter last year during the non-conference (when the rotation
was Maddy and Kiana with Carolyn struggling). And she elevates her game against
elite competition (see her win as a freshman during an otherwise difficult year at #6 Washington
when she pitched a dominating CG). It was the same thing with our batters with MacGrandle yesterday;
I think batters are so used
to seeing velocity, that when they face a drop ball off-speed pitcher, it can throw them off,
and be difficult to figure them out at all.

All I know is digging ourselves a 5-0 hole is not a recipe for success against most of the remaining
teams on the schedule (particularly a team like Arizona State, that boasts a top 5 offense nationally
according to Massey; Oregon is rated #27 for perspective. Arizona State dropped 18, 14, and 13 runs
on Utah all last week). If we give up home runs and runs in general like that so early, there won't be
a game for Kiana to save.

RE: Softball-vs. Oregon - BobK - 04-01-2019

Pancino pitched a great 4 innings yesterday. Her pitching to the past two batters both Ks were classic.

However I like her role. Lee is up to 63 from 58-59. Thanks to a fan with radar next to me

Next year we will have 6 pitchers.

Back to now our Massey is at 22 Oregon State 46. But three Pac 12 teams are top 6.

Hope Dwyer is far better this weekend than last

Stanford drops two spots in RPI to #20. Still in good position to be in the conversation for a Top 16 seed. Though most of our
major competition for hosting (Ole Miss, Oklahoma State) both won home series against top teams; Kentucky did lose a mid-week to a weaker opponent, and dropped a road series at a middle-of-the-pack SEC team. We do have the H2H on another team we are competing with for a regional in Northwestern (#14 in RPI). They also apparently have facility concerns that may prevent their stadium from being a good regional host.

Oregon up to #39 in RPI, so if they somehow manage to finish with a >.500 record, they might just sneak in the tournament, on account of their Top 2 SOS. Finishing with a winning record, given they are five games below .500, will probably be a tall order though.

Oregon State down to #42 in RPI after yet another sweep loss, and ASU at #34. For the third week in a row, we are going to get a desperate opponent with regards to postseason consideration. Oregon State's offense has been the weakest in the Pac-12, but their pitching is better than Oregon's. It will be a tough test this week, on top of having to play on the road.

RE: Softball-vs. Oregon - d4cohn - 04-01-2019

Interesting news out of Oregon: Oregon has now lost one of its only three remaining pitchers, Maddie MacGrandle,
who actually managed her best start of the season against us in their 7-2 win. Her other two relief appearances,
however, were not good, and helped give us the series win.

https://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/2019/04/maddie-macgrandle-leaves-oregon-softball-program.html

Based on this news, I would probably say now it is very unlikely Oregon sneaks into the tournament,
even with their RPI in the "bubble range". Just too little depth in a conference where pitching depth (given the talent
on offense) is a must.

RE: Softball-vs. Oregon - BobK - 04-02-2019

Wow interesting.
