I wonder how well Cal will do without her. She's been a constant through two head coaches.

Indeed.  I wonder how Cal would have done with her as head coach.  And I wonder about her going to the WNBA as an assistant rather than to another university as a head coach.  Is this a step up for her?

I wonder at the dynamic there.  They have underachieved relative to talent level more often than they should even accounting for a few injuries here and there, which were not worse than what most teams deal with.  They haven't run a brilliant offense, the best player in their history is leaving without much impact in the NCAAs or leading them to great heights in conference.  Recruiting seems to have fallen way off lately.  The buck stops with the head coach, but being a long time assistant in such a program, is that a great advertisement for your coaching ability?  Whatever issues they may have may not be her fault.  Still, did she elevate them, help with her head coach with areas of weakness or anything like that?  I wonder if the recent results and the recruiting lately have caused the powers that be to want changes in the coaching staff.  I like Charmin and wish her well as a WNBA coach.  It does seem like she has been there long enough to score a head coaching job somewhere, if she wanted to, but again, cal is not exactly a power so being a long-time coach there may not get her in the door most places.  This is kinda negative about an alum, but eh, she did become a Bear so...

Kianna Smith has just announced she will be leaving Cal. That's gonna hurt.

Charmin leaving for a far lesser job is interesting. Then Kiana Smith days goodbye.
Cal men hire a new mbb coach and their top player leaves.

I love it

I'm pretty mixed. Gottlieb is exactly the type of person you want to see succeed as a coach, and under her leadership Cal has run a clean, healthy program. On a more selfish level, a weak travel partner hurts us at the margins, because opposing teams don't have to worry as much about preparing for the Cal game if they aren't very good. Oregon and Oregon State have really benefited from this the past few years, and it helps to explain why we got stomped by 40 points by Oregon 36 hours after a very, very well executed scout performance against OSU. For me, the sooner they get back to being a consistent top 25 school, the better.

Cal’s WBB recruiting has not been good. As of now they look like 9-12 team in the league. Cal can’t get the top local players often. But that’s a more private story. Public on the cal board

Bearinsider doesn't have any genuine insight into why.  She was doing very well academically and was just accepted into their prestigious undergraduate business program, apparently.

I also would prefer Cal to be a top WBB program, just so long as we always beat them!  If only Ionescu had chosen Cal in her backyard over the University of Nike, for example.

Kiana's dad just took the head coaching position (men's bb) at Cal Poly but I doubt seriously if she's going there - their WBB's program (and coach) is a disaster
