WBB: Marta to Irish? - Lorcan - 05-21-2019
I’ve heard rumblings that Marta will be joining Notre Dame next season as a grad transfer. I assume that we will hear official word later this week, but I wondered whether anyone else had heard any information.

Both the Notre Dame and the Tennessee boards are speculating a little about whether Marta will join their teams, but no one on those boards seems to have any real evidence. What would Marta's graduate degree be? That might be more decisive than the basketball....

I'm having a hard time keeping track of Tennessee's roster at the moment, but it seems like ND's is really crowded at the point next season, with Nixon back, Prohaska around, and Anaya Peoples coming in. It seems like ND's needs are very different than when Lili transferred and there was an obvious need at the point. But obviously wish her the best wherever she goes.

guess the pattern has emerged: Stanford athletes with remaining eligibility wishing to attend grad school elsewhere and participate in an excellent program must go to Notre Dame? (won't list other choices but guess they pale in comparison unless for example you really want to be in a place like Waco TX!)...

Glad it worked out for her - she deserves it. Not my preferred destination from a rivalry standpoint, of course, but since we didn't have room to keep her you really can't blame her. And if she wants to be a coach one day, she'll have been mentored by two of the best coaches and best female leaders in the game.

This works out all around, I think. We had no scholarship available for her. Notre Dame graduated all of its starters and could use an experienced player. I doubt that Notre Dame next year will be the threat it was last year--it will be rebuilding, and so it won't be disaster if we meet them again along the way. Notre Dame has excellent graduate programs.
Marta made some of the most exciting passes I have ever seen in WBB. She has the capability to make some difficult plays that very few other point guards can do. It will be interesting to see how Muffet uses her, whether she can help her become an offensive threat. In any case, I wish her well. She leaves with a Stanford degree and a choice of several bright futures ahead of her.
Anyone know what grad program she will be enrolled in?

Did Muffet use Lili as a PG or SG? I only remember her grad year was cut short by injury.

She played in only 14 games and started just 6, so even before she was injured she was not starting very much. She had a good assist/turnover ratio, so I imagine she played point at least some of the time, but both Jackie Young and Arike Ogubowale had superb A/TO ratios too and they played a whole lot more that year.
