It looks challenging without having the slew of marquee games that Tara scheduled when the Pac 12 was weak. No UConn, Notre Dame, Baylor. I imagine that we will be somewhat tentative without Alanna until our frosh get better integrated into the starting lineup, and so maybe Tara is taking it a tad easier than normal. Or maybe the marquee team is coming in the Vancouver tournament? Anyone know the other teams in that tournament?
Tennessee as usual, Texas again, Ohio State after last year's miss, and Gonzaga and Buffalo. These to go along with a sprinkling of more local teams (Eastern Washington?, USF, Northern Colorado, Davis.)
Tennessee lost top scorer Evina Westbrook and probably will take at least a little while to regain stature with Kellie Harper as new Head Coach. They are rebuilding.
Texas had a disappointing year (losing in Round 1) and lost 2 of its 5 leading scorers. We will once again see Associate head coach Jamie Carey whose name is familiar to long time Stanford fans. I don't think I would say they are in rebuilding mode but their talent level does not look as high as when they came into Stanford and beat us a couple years ago.
Ohio State doesn't have a single senior and has 7 frosh. McGuff is still rebuilding after graduating all 5 starters and 3 WNBA players two years ago. Last year they missed the trip due to smoke. They will be better than they would have been last year, but again they are not the same team that beat us twice a couple of years ago.
As for Gonzaga and Buffalo--both could be dangerous, but Gonzaga graduated Stockton, Rice, and Chandler Smith and Buffalo graduated their star Cierra Dillard. Neither will be as powerful as they were last year--in their homes--with senior laden teams.
I kind of like this schedule. Lots of home games, and teams that should challenge our youngsters without overwhelming them, allowing time for some chemistry to build before we take on the true challenge of Oregon etc.

The Vancouver Showcase might indeed be where the marquee games will be. It is a legit 8 team tournament held for the first time in 2018--and included South Carolina and Notre Dame last year, among others. I can't find out anything (yet) about the other 7 teams playing there in 2019.

A tidbit about Vancouver was unearthed today, as Green Bay announced their participation. Just six more contestants to discover.

Mississippi State also joins the fray in Vancouver. That could potentially be a tricky matchup given our past history against teams that press.

Mississippi State is a quality team with a great coach and that will provide us with one more marquee matchup in the preseason.
However, Mississippi State graduated their top 3 scorers Teaira McCowan, Anriel Howard, and Jordan Danberry and have no seniors on their team this year. It will be a tough game but they will be far from the dominant team they were last year. I also think that we have not had the same difficulties with the press that we had 10 years ago when Tara was searching for a ball handler; we did not graduate any major ball handlers and have Wilson, Williams, Carrington and Brown coming back.
I'm excited about this news. Green Bay and Mississippi State will be fun matchups!

However we don’t yet know who we will play except it’s 3 of 7 teams

True, but you have to think that the tournament organizers will put us and Mississippi State on opposite sides of the bracket in the hope of having these two teams in the final. We would have to beat a couple of teams to get there.

Some grim news of sorts. The Vancouver Showcase has been cancelled due to lack of sponsor support and in its place the University of Victoria will be hosting the event.

On the bright side, we now know who will be there. Syracuse, Houston, Wisconsin-Green Bay, San Francisco, Mississippi State, Cal Baptist, and Bowling Green. So, slightly weaker than last years tournament. We can reasonably hope to play two of Green Bay, Mississippi State and Syracuse.

A few things:

1. Jordan Danberry, the third leading scorer last season for Mississippi State, returns. She was recently granted a fifth year. They should be a solid opponent despite it being a down year for them (no seniors except Danberry), but I don't see them as a major threat to beat us.

2. I don't think we will see Mississippi State and Syracuse. Judging how the bracket was set up last year, we will be the #1 seed and State and Syracuse the #2 and #3. I would love to see Syracuse on our side -- playing them in the semi's and Mississippi State in the championship.

Tara tried to get us a game in Canada last year, which fell through and we wound up playing in Buffalo. It seems that she is still trying to play in Canada and this tournament is the answer. I wonder if this is simply a gesture to Brewer and Jerome, or if there is additional recruiting to be done in Canada that she has her eye on. Canada has about the same population as California, so it could continue to be a good recruiting ground if its young women continue to be interested in basketball.

University of Victoria is a LONG way from Vancouver...are they holding the event at the university, out on the island?
