Giants Trade Discussion Thread - OutsiderFan - 06-16-2019

After the Yankees acquired Edwin Encarnacion Saturday, and given the fact there are no more August waiver trades, the MLB trade market has kicked off as teams jockey for position and try strengthening their rosters for playoff pushes by the July 31 deadline.

If you follow the Giants, it's no secret the trade winds are blowing. It's all but certain Madison Bumgarner, Will Smith (best lefty reliever in MLB right now), and Tony Watson (another good lefty reliever) are all going to be dealt within the next 6 weeks as the Orange and Black look to infuse the organization with more prospect talent.

Given the value of relievers these days, and the fact Smith and Watson are left-handed, could mean especially Smith nets more than Bumgarner does. Though it is great to get younger prospects, I'm hoping the Giants trade with the Yankees to land 3B Miguel Andujar, currently rehabbing from torn shoulder labrum. He's only 24, and clearly the Yankees don't need him with the contributions they are getting from others, the offensive firepower they have. They need pitching help badly.  The Giants have no 3B prospect in the system of any consequence, and could really start re-building by playing him right away. Longoria's contract is awful, but they owe him no matter what, so might as well play someone better, who is way cheaper and under team control for at least 4 more seasons.

Does the no waiver deadline start this year or next? I’d look to package Bum and Smith. That could bring a big return. Bum is throwing the ball better than his results. And his playoff history will bring a bit of a premium.

Thank ya kindly

I’m keeping Smith

Keep Smith. Trade Bum and resign him. Trade Belt, Crawford, Posey, Shark, Holland, Pomegranite and John Miller and his exit velocity.

might consider trading Sandoval, for the prospects he'd bring.  His OPS is .899, a number that's sure to come down.  he's at peak value right now.

Panik, BTW, has the best fielding average among second basemen at .996 in MLB AND tied for the second highest range factor.  Belt, #5, Crawford, #17, Posey, #9.

And you can throw Dyson and Moronta on that list to be traded.

Bum and Smith are both on expiring contracts, so Giants have to trade both. It makes absolutely zero sense to keep them. If Giants want one or both in future, (and they want Giants), Giants can sign them as free agents, which they have to do anyway even if not traded. If the Yankees can trade Aroldis Chapman for Gleyber Torres and re-sign Chapman as a FA a few months later, so too can the Giants trade Will Smith for a valuable asset, and re-sign him.

Interesting about Panik. He also comes with one year of team control as an arbitration eligible player so whoever gets him can have Panik for another year if they desire. Can't remember too many teams trading for defensive specialists at 2B, maybe SS.

Here's a release confirming the July 31 trade deadline:

I wonder what his upside is?  He hit for high average, high OBP for three of his first four years, over .345 OBP each year except the year he got a concussion.  He had a terrible March/April, has come back since.  Great contact hitter, hardly strikes out at all.

RE: Giants Trade Discussion Thread - Mick - 06-17-2019

I don't know that this merits its own thread, but I'm in a hotel in Philadelphia, and the ESPN game on TV is the Giants vs. Dodgers.  it's the ESPN announcing team, which has A-Rod for color observations.

A-Rod's opinions are interesting, very different from Kruk and Kuip and honed by 20+ years as an All-Star.  His observation on Brandon Crawford was interesting.  He thinks Crawford is bored.  He says he won three rings by his late 20s and played before full houses that entire time.  Now, the crowds are 15k to 20k.  He says Crawford still has the ability, and needs a bigger stage.  Said if he went to one of the six division leaders, he would have a career renaissance.

He thinks Beede could be special.  Sixth inning as I write this, Giants ahead 2-1.  Says Beede had two good pitches before, which is not enough in MLB, says you need three.  Says Beede's off-speed stuff is now very good, but says that Beede's inexperience shows.  In a few occasions, A-Rod said Beede should have thrown this pitch instead of that pitch, basically making it easier on the hitters.  Did not opine as to whether Posey would have made better calls than Vogt.

Noted that Maeda tries to make the perfect pitch too much.  Had thrown more than 50 pitches his first two innings, was gone by the sixth.

Hates it when pitchers waste pitches, or as Kruk would call them "easy takes."

Implied that Brandon Belt's bat isn't quite there, bat-speed wise.  Should do more damage with middle-in pitches.  Likes Belt's .369 OPS, thinks Belt would be a star in almost any other ballpark, thinks Belt is highly underrated.  "I love Belt" he said.  Says Belt (after laying off a 3-2 low inside 96 mph fastball) is the difference between good and great.

Says the Giants have slow bats.  Says that the Dodgers are throwing fastballs in fastball counts and the Giants are late almost every time.

Slammed the Dodgers shortstop for a throwing error on a DP attempt, Giants on first and third.  Giants had guy on third, said it was almost a guaranteed run.  he said shortstop should have visualized the scenario before the pitch was thrown.

A-Rod made a lot more interesting comments.  He's on my listening list.

Interesting observation re: Crawford.  You'd  think the fact he's playing for his hometown team would keep him inspired, but maybe it's like "been there, done that" for him and he does need new scenery. Would love to deal Belt, Crawford, Panik, Bum, and Smith.  Just don't see anyone wanting the Brandon contracts.

When I saw the pitching match-up for the game last night I thought "maybe Beede will show he's tried of getting sand kicked in his face. Maybe he will throw caution to the wind and make a stand for himself as a legit MLB starter.  He can do this agains the biggest bully on the block." And he did! FWIW, McCovey Chron game story said Beede pitched better with Vogt than Posey. Also talked about how the Giants can't hit 95 MPH fastballs.

Beede has the best "stuff" of any Giants starter since Lincecum IMO.  He's got all the ability. Just needs to harness it. The 5 BB in 6 innings is too much, but if you can walk that many and only allow 1 ER in 6 IP, that tells you he's got that stuff. Really rooting for Beede.  He seems like such a down to Earth and team guy who has worked his butt off.

RE: Giants Trade Discussion Thread - Phogge - 06-18-2019

Crawford hasn’t adjusted his swing as he has gotten older. Would make better contact if he shortened it but few want to hit singles anymore. Would love to get Pete Rose’s take on Crawford. I would throw Belt down and in consistently until he adjusts.
