OT: KNBR, Radnich, Fitzgerald out, Papa in. - cardcrimson - 06-24-2019

Surprising that after 30+ years, Radnich is unceremoniously dumped by KNBR for Greg Papa. Papa will team with John Lund for the 10am - 2pm slot (that'll be a hoot. . . .). Rod Brooks and Larry Krueger will team with Tom Tolbert for the 2-6pm slot.

Never really liked Fitzgerald much; probably a good guy, but then again, he is a Domer. Lund is awful. Radnich was quirky, though mildly entertaining. Do enjoy listening to Tolbert, pretty funny guy. He and Ratto were darn good radio.

Radnich's act got old 20 years ago...and he was tough on Stanford, as was Fitzgerald and the late, unmourned, Ralph Barbieri. F-them and good riddance.

I stopped listening or watching sports talking heads years ago. The clincher was Ralph the idiot asking Tara wouldn’t it be great to be an NBA Assistant. Tara replies “why I’m already a Head Coach “

Gary real name Radunich remains one of the ten best HS male basketball players I have ever seen. The best male passer at that level. He played with tremendous flair. No look passes behind the back and on the money

Tolbert is terrific. Gets its supposed to be fun. And doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously. Seems like a genuinely good guy. I went to a “thing” for Lute Olson a few years back in SF. Tolbert was the MC. Hilarious. Told a story that what he was in Arizona one of the things he would have to do is run a few miles outside they would run past a big fountain and then circle back the same way past the fountain into the gym He’d run to the fountain drench himself and then hide for a while, catch up with everybody when they came back after again drenching himself and head in. Olson just shook his head. It was pretty obvious how much Tolbert cared for Lute.

That was a year Arizona when into play Cal and was number one in the nation at the time. Lute was talking to Arizona boosters. He told the crowd don’t be too excited this team can’t shoot and in the end it’ll get them. He was right on the money.

And I agree- Tolbert and Ratto were terrific together. Despite looking like a walrus and his general snide demeanor- Ratto is supposedly a very good guy.

Radnich is a pretty dichotomous personality.  On one hand, he's a good guy with a big heart who respects everyone.  On the other, he's cynical and dismissive of sports and fans, is kind of obsessed with celebrity, while being extremely humble and valuing his own privacy.

I can never forget being in the Bay Area in March and hearing him talk about Erik Karlsson as a free agent.  He basically said because hockey isn't a big deal around here like it is in Canada, and Karlsson can go out in San Jose with nobody recognizing him, he likely wouldn't be re-signing with the Sharks.  

The very next day I was at Santana Row with a friend, and saw Erik Karlsson lounging at the Japanese restaurant there, looking out on passersby. It was March, sunny, and in the mid 60s.  He looked to be quite relaxed and enjoying himself.  I guess so, because he just signed an 8-year contract to stay in San Jose.

The self-deprecating humor is appreciated, but the cynicism about sports really turned me off.

Radnich's act is at least 10 years in the rear view mirror, maybe more like 20.

I'd heard that this was planned that he's 70 and retiring. But maybe not.

Fitz - yawn.

Papa & Tolbert are good, but I don't listen to sports talk radio much.

I don't watch the NBA and the last time I listened to KNBR (except for Giants games) Bruce McGowan had a nighttime show. Who is Fitz? I know the Fitzgerald at the Chron but it couldn't be the same guy.

Bobbbbbbbb and Bob, the best player I ever saw in HS was Ed Thomas at Mack. Went to USF and hurt his knee. Played three years but a shell of the guy I saw. The best guys I watched were Willie Wise, Russ Gumina, Joe Ellis, Erwin Mueller and Vance DeVost. You have to put Tom Meschery and Ken Flower on a top ten list. Plus Frank Sobrero, Leroy Doss and Paul Silas. The Ogden brothers, Jason Kidd, Fred Lacour, Ansley Truitt. But I watched in the Dark Ages and have no idea of the last forty years. Russell was at Mack but wasn't a star.

OMG, forgot Don Barksdale, Hank Liusetti and KC Jones.

Tolliver guarded in the corner back to the basket goes up hangs still hanging mails the turnaround jumper

I saw former cal and Atlanta QB Steve Barkowski score 51 in a game

Best athlete I saw in HS was Everette Stephens. Senior season lost their first game in the state final to Chicago Simeon - the team with Ben Simon who was shot & killed just weeks later. He went on to a great career at Purdue and was drafted by the Indiana Pacers.

I agree about Radnich, Mick.  He is an arrogant boob.  I have had several interactions with him on the air in the past and his grandstanding is so severe it detracts from everything else.  He is dishonest in the manner in which he handles callers and shamelessly steals their points in order to make himself look better or to avoid looking foolish.  I just learned to ignore him and haven't listened to him in many years.
