Yes, thank you Judy! It is always great to have some news during the summer doldrums. This caught my eye in particular:
Quote:Meanwhile, two seniors, forward Nadia Fingall and guard DiJonai Carrington, are rehabbing from knee surgeries. Kate hopes both of them will be ready to go when the season starts in November.
"Hopes" doesn't sound super confident, and of course it also means they are missing a lot of summer practice. Carrington I'm not too worried about since she was playing at such a high level and some downtime might actually be good for her. But I have hoped ever since her freshman year that Fingall (and now Dodson) would come back after a summer and show dramatic improvement--like McPhee or Bird did--but it is hard to do that if you are rehabbing the whole time.
I really think the post positions are wide open and we could see freshmen get a lot of time there. Another possibility--Jerome is getting a lot of competitive time for Canada and perhaps we could see her leap forward. I've never been more uncertain about who our posts are going to be at this point before a season.

I wouldn’t worry too much in July 81. Watch some of the videos to feel better

Some of my uncertainty, Bob, is not worry, but hope--the feeling that several of the freshmen may be good enough at their positions to contribute right away. It certainly throws things up in the air. And that isn't all bad :)

I've already seen enough video of Belibi (and not even talking about the dunks) to be comfortable having her start in a post position. I'll happily tolerate some sloppy play and miscues on defense while she adjusts in exchange for her offensive layup and defensive rebounding beast modes. I will be very surprised if she doesn't have the highest upside potential of any incoming frosh not ranked among the 2019 top 10 recruits.

I agree with 2006alum. I think Belibi will see a lot of playing time because of her rebounding and hustle plays. Lexie is a good rebounder from the wing position because she has a very high motor and is always sprinting to the ball. But she has a slight frame and can get bumped on the way there or pushed around when she gets there. Belibi probably has a similar motor but is much much stronger, has a giant vertical, has a giant wingspan and has giant hands. I do think a good physical comparison for her is Kawhi Leonard.

And to further complicate matters, Prechtel, no. 15, is known for rebounding and defense and altering shots. She could turn into the next Kayley Johnson who had 2 22 rebound games her freshman year. Johnson played only about 20 minutes a game and collected on average 10 rebounds per game. There is always playtime for a rebounder like that.

Fran Belibi led the US U19 team in scoring tonight, with 18 points in just under 18 minutes against Korea, on 8/8 shooting (all layups) and 2/4 free throws.

Fascinating. Jones has been so good for so long that she was on everybody's radar and of course the #1 ranked player. But Belibi started playing late and has said she wants to go to medical school instead of turning pro--and I think those factors kept her a little lower in the rankings than she deserves. She became famous for her dunks but as her high school coach said, she had to learn how to dribble, pass, and shoot. What amazed him and everyone else is how fast she developed those skills after not playing basketball for most of her life. I think some have been skeptical that she is more than a dunking wonder and are only now beginning to see her full potential. It is beginning to look to me as if she might have an upside potential like that of Chiney but might take an extra year or two to get there.
It is so easy to be optimistic just now. Waiting for November is worse than Christmas as a 5 year old.

If you wish to view all the women's 2019 FIBA U19 games, you can get a listing in YouTube by searching on "
USA U19 women." That will give you access to every full games played in the women’s group. (Plus games from previous years.)

USA won the U19 championship in overtime against Australia. I didn't watch, but from the recap I see that Fran Belibi was in during overtime and made some important plays.
