FINA World Championships - BostonCard - 07-21-2019

Manuel and Ledecky each have a silver medal so far (Manuel for anchoring the 4 x 100 free; Ledecky for the 400 m free).  Not sure what other Stanford connected swimmers are competing; surely BobK will know.

The World Championships run through next Sunday.

RE: FINA World Championships - BobK - 07-22-2019

Well I read Eastin swam and was 9th in her heat.

RE: FINA World Championships - oldalum - 07-22-2019

Eastin finished tied for 9th in the semis so didn't make the finals in the 200 IM
Taylor Ruck, swimming for Canada, had a good swim in the 400 free relay, and has qualified third for the finals in the 100 back.
Manuel had a great swim in the relay, so hopefully she will be competitive for a medal in the 100 free.

Ledecky finishing second in the 400 free to a young Australian is a major upset, but the times were slow. Race strategy may have played a role: the Australian broke out to a big lead, Ledecky had to expend a lot of energy to swim her down and take the lead, but the Australian had more left for the finish. Competition is good! Ledecky has the 200 free heats today, plus the final in the 1500 free which she should win easily.

Thanks for the link BC.

Appears both the US and Russian men broke the meet record for the 4X100 in a race that was tight throughout. Nice to see that Nathan Adrian has rebounded from his health issues well enough to put in an excellent, and winning, anchor leg!

US Women broke the American record for the 4X100, but finished 2nd to the Aussies' Meet Record time. Australia's Campbell sisters will be force @ Tokyo and the US is going to need a better 3rd leg to beat them there. Notable that Manuel swam anchor over Abbey Weitzeil, who may still be recovering from an injury suffered @ NCAAs. Ruck's 52.19 was the fastest leg on the third placed Canadian team.

Times and appearances should be more representative in this meet than for the Indoors Worlds, but I suspect many of our elite swimmers will be using this meet as a dress rehearsal for the Tokyo Olympics, so probably best to enjoy the good, and don't freak about the underwhelming performances.

RE: FINA World Championships - oldalum - 07-22-2019

Latest news is that Ledecky has scratched from the 200 free due to a medical illness. Not known if she will swim the 1500 final. Seems like this was the reason for her second place in the 400 free.

Katie Ledecky Withdraws From 2 Races at Swimming Worlds Because of Illness https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/22/sports/katie-ledecky-swimming-world-championships.html

Taylor Ruck also withdrew from the 200 free, to save her strength for later races.

RE: FINA World Championships - M T - 07-24-2019

FYI, you can see all the FINA events (did you know there was a 20M diving event?  Yowch!) on www.olympicchannel.com, if you are on one of MANY TV services (including Sling -- they initially show you about 12, but click on "Show more").  The USA women played AUS in a water polo semifinal this (Wed.) morning, but I'll not mention the results if you want to watch it.

Watching the women's water polo live was VERY frustrating.  My live feed was disrupted every 2 minutes (literally!) with an ad. The ad required you to click to start the ad, and some of the ads required a second click to "skip" the ad.  For those not familiar with water polo, imagine watching a basketball game under those conditions.  I could usually get back to the live feed after about 15 seconds, but a possession only lasts 30 seconds.

However, I watched some previously-played water polo matches and there were no ads.  They were easy to watch, with good quality video, and good camera work (PAC-12, pay attention!).  You can jump around in the video. No video announcer. The stadium announcer (I'm not sure what language) could not be heard well, but they did have boom mikes that they'd put over one team during a timeout.  They didn't show the shot clock, but you do see the game clock and a penalty clock.  The underwater videos were too infrequent for my taste, but they were quite good.  It would be interesting to set up two cameras, one above the goal and one below, so they looked at the same (sub)surface area, centered on about 5m out from the goal, and do a split screen of above/under water.

And, yes, they do have all the FINA swimming (but I'm getting that nightly from NBCSN(?) on Sling)

If you're curious, a free-fall of 20m takes 2 seconds with a final speed of about 44mph.  The usual 10m platform results in a 1.4 second fall, ending at 31mph.  The kinetic energy of your body is twice that at 20m versus 10m. (Thanks to the splat calculator.)

RE: FINA World Championships - unclechuck - 07-26-2019

My Comcast super sports package carries the NBCsports channel so I'm getting luscious Tour de France coverage, and much of the Aquatic coverage, with most heats and final being covered in the two daily sessions. My fave Rowdy Gaines is on the NBC broadcast which is of very good HD quality.

Aussies are out in force and are on form, so a good wake up call for the US team that has been improving as the meet progresses.

China persists with it sketchy history of performance enhancement activities, which is a taint on the sport for this meet, and a foreboding element for the Tokyo Olympics next year. FINA seems to have chosen to be as toothless with China as they were with the East Germans in the 1980s. Its a shame, but there it is.

Yikes! Good News; bad news....

Stanford verbal for 2021 Regan Smith splatted Missy Franklin's WR in the 200m backstroke during Friday's semifinals. Seven minute video version; Rowdy Gaines goes bonkers!

Now, with a year of high school still to go, the anxiety begins that a) she'll go straight to pros; or b) she'll blow up the Olympics in 2020 and go pro, or c) she'll end up a one and done before going pro, or go the Ledecky route. Ommmmmh; savor the moment......

RE: FINA World Championships - M T - 07-28-2019

Does anyone have any idea why GoStandford has been radio silent on the World Chanpionships?  Are all the PR staff in South Korea and forgot their passwords?

Gold medals (individuals & team), world records....yawn... so, anything new?  Oh, a Stanford athlete is injured when a floor falls?  Nah, not worth mentioning ...

Hey GoStanford, I only watched some of the events.  Did Stanford have divers? Synchronized swimmers, open water?  How’d Stanford men do in water polo?

Ledecky’s 800 was quite interesting to me.  Not only is she fast, but that lady can race!  She set her usual fast pace but gave up the lead midway through.  She stayed close and crushed Quadarella in the final 50.  It was only Ledecky’s 20th fastest 800, but still faster than anyone else has ever been (per SwimSwam).  She was all smiles as though the race went as she planned. Unfortunately the feed I had didn’t carry her interview.

In WWP, the gold medal match was played mostly in a heavy rain. The US played well in the first quarter and lead 3-1.  Spain’s defense lead to some US errors in the second and tying at 3-3. The half finished with the US up 5-3.  A great 3rd quarter sealed the game at 9-3.  The final wound up 11-6.  Current or former Stanford athletes scored 9 of the 11 goals.

Twitter is your friend. Try it. I get all the info. :)

Plus I have friends who are SIDS at Stanford and while we here all get paid, or I did, to work 24-7 they don’t

Realistically, the month of July is the only month an AD employee can know for sure that no Stanford team will be actively competing in NCAA events.   We need to understand that the crew not on vacation likely does not have the bandwidth to cover all of the alums in all of the different sports around the world.

Interesting article just posted about this.

'“She is under all kinds of pressure to go pro with the Olympics coming up — that’s a lot of money,” he added. Regan, however, has wanted to attend Stanford since she was a kid, and is “almost certain” she’ll still go, Paul said. “If [going to Stanford] means the world to you, some sacrifices have to be made,” Paul said he told Regan.'

Ended up with three world records. The 200 back, the 100 back as the lead leg in the 4x100 medley relay, and as a team in the aforementioned relay. Amazing.
