The Cardinal have one of college football's toughest schedules this season, starting with Northwestern:

Not terribly well-informed but somewhat interesting. Completely ignoring Cameron Scarlett in the run game sections takes away from their credibility, I'd say.

Hopefully we'll surprise them with our run game.  We'll certainly play better than we did in Evanston.

Geaux Cardinal!

Scarlett only averaged .27 YPC less than Love last season.  He really has gotten better each year in the program. I say Austin Jones is the most talented RB on the roster now, but that doesn't mean Scarlett isn't a good player.

Keep in mind Scarlett had most of the goal line/3rd-and-short carries too.

Yeah, that was not exactly a deep look at Stanford. They did, however, have a roughly correct description of what to expect from the Stanford offense and there were some amusing items.

- Their summary of Stanford's receiving corps seems to match the average Stanford fan's view, even if the details given don't seem to lead to this conclusion.
"Though Stanford lost its two most prized weapons to the NFL, Costello will have plenty of able targets. But his options don’t have quite as much experience as one would like."

- They not only missed Scarlett but also Speights in describing our RBs. The Scarlett omission may be due to looking at a roster from last year and not understanding that Stanford lists players by their actual class and not their football eligibility (they described several others by the academic class). That's not the case for Speights however, as he was only a junior last year.

- Despite basing this comment upon a misunderstanding of our RB depth chart, I would say this statement is completely true: "it’s hard to have a lot of confidence in the Cardinal’s running game heading into the year." Blind rodents, nuts, and all that.

- Hidden in that article is the fact that Stanford allowed more yardage than they gained last year. The same thing happened in both 2017 and 2016. Yet during that three year span, Stanford went 28-12 with a Pac 12 North championship. I think that sort of discrepancy is rather rare.
So, what does it indicate?
1. David Shaw is a brilliant coach because he gets his team to at least 9 wins even when opponents are better able to move the football - and thus maybe overall better personnel.
2. David Shaw is a disaster as coach, both offense and defense are crumbling, and the good years of Stanford football are coming crashing down.
3. Nothing at all, it's just a weird anomaly. Consider, for example, that these are the only three seasons in Shaw's tenure where the team was overall outgained (even in the rough 2014 season, Stanford outgained its opponents by over 100 yds/game).

- Turnovers is another spot they had trouble reading the stat sheet. On fumbles the writer apparently read what the Stanford offense coughed up rather than what the defense forced. So, Stanford recovered 7 opposition fumbles (not 4) and officially forced 16 (not 11, though another site says 9 and I don't think that is a reliable stat). More importantly, their interpretation of those numbers is odd.
"The Cardinal was also effective in producing turnovers"
Well, Stanford's actual gain of 18 turnovers was in a many way tie for 79th in the country, their claim of 15 turnovers for Stanford would have been tied for 100th, neither of which seems particularly impressive.

RE: Northwestern's Take on Stanford - fullmetal - 07-25-2019

Well, if the Northwestern coaching staff is as insightful as their fanbase, Stanford will be underestimated.

RE: Northwestern's Take on Stanford - PVTree - 07-26-2019

"Four players on the 2018 team were drafted into the NFL, including Arcega-Whiteside and Love. Linebacker Bobby Okereke, punter Jake Bailey and tight end Kaden Smith also got the call."

Somebody, please help me out as I seem to have forgotten how to add despite my engineering degree....Arcega-Whiteside is 1, Love is 2, Okereke is 3 (I'm right so far, yes?), Bailey is 4, and Smith is 5 or 4 again? I'm confused.

What's the Stanford take on Northwestern?

These NW fans think there's no way they don't destroy Stanford...

Loses 11 starters (6 O including QB, 4 D, and P); no idea how good former 5* QB Hunter Johnson is but the guy hasn't taken a single college snap. They're gonna pound the crap out of the rock - Fitz does his homework and knows our CBs are better than their WRs. Great early test for our DL and new ILBs.

HUNTER JOHNSON LOOKS POTENT.  Top three QBs in 2017 class:  our Davis Mills, HJ, and Jake Fromm (Georgia).
No shame in losing competition at Clemson to perhaps best QB in USA, Trevor Lawrence, who sliced up BAMA in the Natl Champ game.
Now HJ starts a new career at NORW, with five good WRs returning, but some gaps on the OLine.
We MUST get to HJ, or he will cut us up.  Could be a preview of playing Herbert for Oregon.
He also looks a lot like Mitch Trubisky at UNC who slashed us in the 2016 Sun Bowl (plus the two picks) -- a genuine dual threat like Trubisky.
Mitch now starts for the CHI Bears after being drafted high in the first round.  If not for those picks, we lose that Sun Bowl.
NORW will throw more than run, so we gotta get to HJ early and often.

He didn't lose to Lawrence. Lawrence was still in HS. He lost to Kelly Bryant, who then lost to Lawrence and transferred to Mizzou.

He's a total unknown to me. Zero college snaps.

Well, not exactly.

During the 2017 season, Johnson backed up Kelly Bryant and completed 21 of 27 passes for 234 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He posted the highest passing efficiency rating of Clemson’s three quarterbacks

18 things to know about NU QB Hunter Johnson

Link above also has yet another funny anecdote re:  Harbaugh.  Cracker Barrel is his favorite restaurant.  And it explains why.

17 for 19 for 225yds and 2 tds of that was combined against...The Citadel, Kent State, and Wake Forest, all in garbage time. Hell, he's probably pretty good, but that's a tiny tiny sample size.
