9 a.m. PT Kick-offs? -
tcufrog - 07-27-2019
Apparently Larry Scott is exploring the possibility of having some games with a 9 a.m. PT starting time. This seems to be in response to criticism about the late starts, particularly the 10 p.m. ET and later starts. It would also create a PAC-12 game in the Noon ET time slot. For those of us who travel a distance to Stanford games, a 9 a.m. start would require travel the day before. Query the impact on the usual tailgate, which is part of the fun of attending the game.

I think it is pretty simple. The early start games will be very very poorly attended. It will be too early to really tailgate. Many people want to sleep in on Saturday. I think it will actually produce worse attendance than "PAC-12 after dark" games. Hopefully, it won't actually happen. Many people don't much like noon games. Anything before 11:00 has no chance at attracting any fans.

Why not play the games on XBOX with fake players. Makes as much sense.
Scott is a pimp.

in general I agree with you, it would be interesting to see if marque games (this year say the Wash/Ore game, like that would happen) or rivalry games (say USC/UCLA but more likely ASU/UA) at 9am would have significantly lower attendance.

The key that might make this work is coach acceptance.
Fans are not thrilled with 8PM kicks that end near midnight, but the teams hate them. The road team is often no getting home until 3 or 4AM. It is hard on the "student"-athletes on the road team as they lose Sunday too. It is also hard on the family of the staff as they really treasure their Sunday time which is lost if Mom or Dad is getting back to home an hour or so after the players were delivered to campus. No reason to cry for multi-millionaire head coach, but the staff includes a number of trainers and equipment managers that are not making massive money.
Given that apparently a few head coaches are willing to give it a go. The conference only has 5 or 6 assets to offer broadcasters each weekend. The value maximizing objective is to avoid overlap between the 5 or 6 assets AND to the extent possible avoid the #1 SEC and #2 SEC games of the week that are normally broadcasted at ~ 4PM Eastern and ~7:30PM Eastern.
The Pac-12 is trying to find a pond (timeslot) where they can be the biggest fish. The burdens of the 5th most popular college football conference. Don't blame Larry. The reality is clear. Our neighbors and fellow USA citizens who would rather watch the SEC on TV than watch a Pac-12 product in the stands or on TV. Larry can't quite say that at the Pac-12 media day, but that is the reality. 9AM will be a total failure, but after that failure 8PM will seem more appealing to Pac-12 season ticket holders. That remains 8PM/ 9PM(mountain) time slot the conference needs fans in the Pac-12 footprint to understand and support.

I appreciate that the conference is trying to own a time slot and maximize revenues, but I disagree.
First, the Pac 12 already has a game it “owns” at 7pm, there is no reason to own more than one. The reason why it’s so easy to own that timeslot is because it’s so unappealing. How many viewers can you hope to get when a 7:30 game ends at 2AM eastern time?
Second, a hallmark failure of the Pac 12 in recent years has been to cheapen its brand, shrink support and empty its stadiums by treating the Pac 12 as a second-class product. If you repeatedly offer up the Pac 12 as a cheap product with unwanted time slots, groveling to switch kickoff times to whatever time a broadcaster will offer, you cheapen your product year after year. The stadiums get emptier, and who wants to watch a game on TV when it’s broadcast at remnant times with half-empty stadiums?
The west coast Pac-12 media markets are an absolute jewel. Viewers have disproportionately large discretionary incomes, large HD TVs yearning for content, workers at companies that are leading the world. I see companies like Alaska Airlines who get this and are making a killing serving these markets. So, I don’t buy that Larry Scott has a tough position with a weak product; he has the conference with the most championships across all sports and weakens the conference’s brand and long-term prospects day after day with his endless short-term schemes.

I love the 7:00pm games and have never understood the resistance to them for anyone except those with elementary kids. They’re certainly family friendly for my now older kids.
I would only see a future 9am game on my TV. In my pajamas. Alone.
I can’t imagine rallying the family at 6 am to make it to our seats by a 9 am kickoff. On a Saturday. In the dark. It would be the sort of bridge over the River Kwai forced labor march that would kill the next generation of Stanford fans in my family.
That’s just Div 2 bush league crap.

Not to mention
the teams would have to do walkthroughs at 4:30am, according to crazy pirate warlord Mike Leach. He hates the idea.
Personally I think the #Pac12AfterDark brand is being embraced by the younger generation (if Reddit is any meaningful indicator). A game or 2 in that timeslot is inevitable, and hardcore fans will watch. Maybe try not having the marquee games at 7pm, though. Or delayed by truck racing.

7PM is too early for the Pac-12 to claim ownership. The ESPN's SEC Game of the week starts at 7:30PM or 8PM Eastern. Loaded with commercial breaks, that game routinely runs up to 11 or even 11:30PM Eastern. The end of that SEC game easily dominates all CFP programming running at that time. A 7PM Pac-12 game is approaching halftime before that SEC game ends.
Worse as most fans of the Pac-12 know those Pac-12 After Dark 7:30PM games often start without a TV audience at all as those never ending Big12 games routinely run waaaaaaaaaaay over their scheduled time slot. So the Pac-12 often unable to claim the #1 show in a time slot prior to 8:30PM Pacific or so.
Even if the Pac-12 had the best athletes, coaching and passionate season ticket holders, this is still a ratings and revenue game the Pac-12 will lose because there are just more people living East of the Mississippi and those TV audiences generally prioritize watching schools from their geographic footprint.
I wish the Pac-12 will breakaway from TV revenue dependency, but I know the majority of the ADs in the conference need the biggest possible TV contract in the short-term.
If 9AM is undesirable....how about 11PM. The Pac-12 could own that Asia/Pacific with Sunday AM kickoffs to that potential audience of 2-3 billion people. ;)

Having 9 a.m. kickoffs is a terrible idea. Period. I don't care about TV ratings or east coast audiences or the response of various markets. It's just a supremely dumb-ass idea.

We had 9am kickoffs in Youth Football League. Everyone hated it. We had night games in HS and everyone loved it, especially the dance afterwards in the old gym.

We played at Kezar on Thursday or Friday afternoons. No weekends and no night games so we could hit a few teen club dances or Playland. Life was simple. Ahhhhhhhhhh.

I don't know why but every St. Anne's Teen Club dance ended in a fight. Usually SI/SH.

Indeed, those were the days. . . .
PeeWee football here starts even earlier than 9am, thinking perhaps 7:30 or 8 am. The little cheerleaders get a big kick out of my Cavalier as I'm walking him on the track around the field. Could never imagine getting my daughter dressed up in bows in time for an early kickoff. Amazed the boys are in full pads at 7am running drills.

I'm weird, but I would love 9am games for myself personally. I bike to the games and the two biggest factors to me are avoiding the dark for riding and avoiding the heat in the stadium.
However, I am not so selfish that I think this plan would be good for the team or the league.
I'd prefer going back to the old days where every game started at 12:30 or 1:00. That leaves the heat but at least avoids the dark.
Then again, I wish night lights had never been installed, I like the idea of local TV blackouts to compel attendance, I hate the playoffs, feel there are 3 or 4 times as many bowls as there should be, hate it when Big Game is not the last game of the regular season, wish Utah and Colorado had never been admitted to the Pac-10, would prefer to play in the Rose Bowl (but only against a Big 10 team) to anything else, and...I don't carry a cell phone and couldn't care less about reception in the stadium.
As you can all see, I was born 50 years too late. Don't put any stock in my preferences.

Amen. And no two platoon football so only the best all around athletes play for PAYING customers. Bring back the single wing and two and a half hour games. No TV commercials. No scholarships. Cox Stadium on Friday nights. Playland. Sutros. The Crystal Palace market on Market Street. Zims. Blums. Seals Stadium and nobody sleeping on the corner of 16th and Bryant. George Christopher. Bobbbbb gets it.
