OT: Terrible news — Mass Shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival - Snorlax94 - 07-28-2019

Not specifically Stanford-related, but terrible news in the Bay Area. Probably everyone on this board knows someone who was there.

I also know a few people who, at the last minute, decided not to go due to the heat :(  Entirely a tragic situation.

I have stopped at all caring about mass shootings in the USA because what is the point? But this hitting so close to home at such an iconic Bay Area event, made me want to learn WTF happened.

It sounds like Gilroy and Santa Clara County first responders really deserve a lot of credit for limiting the harm the shooter inflicted. The festival itself had taken pretty extreme safety precautions, proving, once again, that you can try to protect "soft targets" all you want, but a motivated person will find a way to hurt people in spite of them.

Unfortunately, you are totally correct. If someone is willing to put enough thought into it, and does not care if they survive the attack, it is impossible to protect the public from them. The attacks using automobiles or trucks as the weapon clearly show that there is really no way to prevent crazy people from killing bystanders. Guns and bombs just multiply the problem.

Moreover, any safety measure that creates a grouping of people outside of the safety area (that is, a line to get through security) is itself a target.  We are lucky that nobody has yet decided to set off an explosive or take out a weapon at in the TSA at a busy airport line because the large number of people in close proximity would likely result in a large number of casualties.

Indeed. It would be very easy to do. It is only a matter of time before it happens. We have not been subjected to much organized and carefully planned terrorism in the US since 9/11. The "terrorist" incidents in the US have been a few radicalized "free agents" who were not really part of a highly organized terrorist group. The DHS has probably thwarted a few that we don't know about. We have been lucky, but I can't imagine that will last.

After 9/11, I had a conversation with a representative of an FBI anti-terrorism task force who stated that there were 23 major terrorist groups in the United States, including three in the San Francisco Bay Area, of which they were aware at the time.  I suspect that DHS and associated agencies have thwarted far more terrorist incidents and groups than we're aware of.

I believe that is basically what happened at the Ariane Grande concert in Manchester England, no?

Per Wikipedia the bomber targeted concert goers on their way out, not as they were waiting to get in through security, but the idea is the same.

I don't know anyone or know of anyone impacted by the Gilroy shooting, but have known of victims from others.

Specifically, my dad's barber's daughter was killed at the Las Vegas concert shooting.  And a friend's husband is a nurse who had to tell a patient their sister was killed at the San Diego synagogue shooting a few months ago.

Makes me wonder how many degrees of separation people reading this have been from these types of incidents.

I guess we can say at least we were aware of the danger. Unlike now
