This Shaw quote has me flummoxed -
OutsiderFan - 08-02-2019
“I’m very confident,” said Shaw, when asked about kick-starting the ground game. “
Just having the depth on the offensive line, to where if a guy does get hurt we’re not going to be crossing our fingers and wondering, `What are we going to do?’ “
Stanford only has 12 OL who can possibly play and it looks to me the primary backups have to be True Frosh and an undersized walk-on after Hattis. Does anyone here understand Shaw's confidence? Here is the OL depth chart I can form right now:
RT: Sarrel - Pease - Miller*
RG: Powell - Hornibrook*
OC - Dalman - Nugent*
LG: Hamilton - Bragg*
LT: Little - Hattis - Rouse*
* True Frosh
Maybe Shaw really likes Pease and has big confidence in the True Frosh? Gotta say he risks losing his credibility when he says everything is fine with this OL depth. Why would he say such a thing?

I've read two reviews that positively mention the true frosh OLs. No idea why.

The 272 lb Pease probably gets a scholarship very soon
Frosh could contribute or maybe you don’t think Little did :)

Little was the consensus #1 offensive lineman in the entire '17 recruiting class...
Although Nate Herbig also played a ton as a freshman and he was a mid-3*.
At least the frosh are all big enough to play.

Gary Anderson started at guard his freshman year. Also Karakozoff and maybe Andy Pappathaniousou (Sp?). Whitfield.

Garnett, Murphy and Peat all played as freshmen.

What do you expect Shaw to say? Perhaps you’d like: “I’ve given up on the running game. The offensive line is below average and thin to boot. Jeez I hope the passing game works.”

Isn't it possible to say "I really like this group and am confident we will have an improved running game," without citing depth on the OL that is difficult to see. Of course, the reporter didn't seem to follow-up with a "what makes for more depth on this year's OL?" question.
So until I understand what provides this depth, I'm quite curious what makes it so.

I’ll take Shaw at his word that offensive line depth is something he is feeling good about this season.
I don’t expect it means the team has a three-deep chart of 5 star recruits, to me, it just means it’s something less worrisome than perhaps other areas or other years.
My guess it means that he has more than 5 guys he feels who are ready to play who have some familiarity with the playbook, it could mean there are a couple of guys who can play both guard and tackle so there’s a little bit of flexibility, it could mean there are fewer injuries heading into camp this season relative to last year, it could mean the frosh are looking good and could hypothetically contribute if the need arose.

Coach speak. What do you expect. Among the most boring individuals in society.

It probably means "80% of last year's issues were due to lack of depth, and we were really crossing our fingers because we put practice squad players on the field." This year, those previously-practice squad guys are seasoned, and the injured guys are back. Guys might be better-equipped to play multiple positions.
Only have two upperclassmen in the second string is a worry though. I don't think Shaw really meant that the OL was out of the woods...probably just that he was confident that this OL would be better than last year's.

According to John Reid, 4 of the 5 starting OL jobs are not set. Sounds like more injuries, though none serious. Anyone going to the open practice today should make note of who plays the most on the line.
https://cardreider.wordpress.com/2019/08/10/football-notebook-cardinal-offensive-line-is-far-from-settled-troika-of-running-backs-will-carry-mail/
Quote: Shaw continued: “I’m not quite ready to name five starters. We’ve had too many miss too much time to have a true evaluation. Henry Hattis will get back out there in the next couple of days and get more reps. He’s battling for a starting job at guard.”
On the frosh linemen
Quote:“I’m excited about all the freshmen,” Shaw said. “A couple of guys are banged up, so we’ll rotate a couple of young guys with the starting group. They’re not perfect, but they are growing and learning. There is a chance, with our depth, that one or more could see some significant time throughout the season. Our job is to get them ready for that.”

Not quite correct. Dalman is the starting C by default. We have 4 guys (Hamilton, Sarell, Powell, Hattis) to put in the other 3 spots; Powell is a G while the other 3 are somewhat flexible. FWIW Sarell played exclusively RT in the spring game.
My money is on Little-Hamilton-Dalman-Powell-Sarell, with Hattis coming in at G and/or Hamilton kicking out to T in case of an injury.
Also hoping walk-on OL Grant Pease shows he's deserving of a scholarship. He's gained over 20lbs in the offseason and held his own in the spring game, and poor Trey Stratford from our inexcusable '18 haul of 1 seems like a lost cause. If Pease is a clear leg up from some of the scholarship freshmen, I'd for sure pull the trigger.

I'm borderline obsessed with what I perceive to be a lack of bulk on the O-line for Stanford.
Dalman is probably going to be the lightest guy. Here's how he compares to other (likely) starting centers in the Pac-12 North:
Frederick Mauigoa, Washington State (Sr.; Rimington watch list): 310 lbs.
Nick Harris, Washington (Sr.; Pre-season Pac-12 1st team): 302 lbs.
Nathan Eldridge, Oregon State (RS Sr.): 300 lbs.
Michael Saffell, California (Jr.): 300 lbs.
Jake Hanson, Oregon (RS Sr.; Rimington watch list): 295 lbs.
Drew Dalman, Stanford (RS Jr.): 284 lbs.
Here's how Walker Little compares to others in the Pac-12 North:
Penei Sewell, Oregon (So.): 325 lbs.
Trey Adams, Washington (RS Sr.): 314 lbs.
Walker Little, Stanford (Jr.; Pre-season Pac-12 1st team): 309 lbs.
Blake Brandel, Oregon State (RS Sr.): 307 lbs.
Liam Ryan, Washington State (RS Jr.): 300 lbs.
Will Craig, California (Soph.): 290 lbs.

Dalman is a RS Soph, but that's nitpicky. Hoping he breaks 290 next season. Also heard from a player parent that our training camp weigh-in weights are usually 5-10 lbs lighter than gameday playing weights for OL because the summer is hot and primarily focused on conditioning. And we don't update them as the season starts, as some schools may.
Encouraging to me: the freshmen are coming in at weights where a year of college S&C will put them in the 300 ballpark. Tackles are both over 290 and interior guys are 279, 284, and 286. (For comparison, Powell and Dalman both came in under 270.)
More importantly, beef means nothing if you're caught flat-footed. Guys like Penei Sewell and Nate Herbig who can actually move at 320+ are a rarity.
