Mens Golf - US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-12-2019

Ready for more Stanford golf? 7 former, current and future Stanford golfers are competing in the US Amateur at Pinehurst.

The 36 hole qualifying is being contested over Pinehurst #2 and #4 courses. The scoring average for #2 was nearly 4 strokes higher than for #4 today. Consider that as you look at the leaderboard.

Currently in 1st place - Brandon Wu, who shot 65 on Pinehurst #4. He finished birdie-birdie-birdie-eagle-par.
Other Stanford scores:
Isiaiah Salinda - 68 on Pinehurst #4
Michael Thorbjornsen - 69 on Pinehurst #4
Henry Shimp - 70 on Pinehurst #4
Nate Menon - 73 on Pinehurst #4
Ethan Ng - 73 on Pinehurst #4
Karl Vilips - 77 on Pinehurst #2

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-13-2019

Good insight of the of immense proportions difference between Pinehurt #2 and #4.
I wonder if #2 isn't so iconic and familiar to good golfers
that they know that course in a way they know few others..

Note: Wu's 65 is the competitive course record for #2.

Discouraging to see Vilips's continuing a relatively down year.
He held the number one junior spot for at least 18 months.
Too much too young?

Good to see Thornbjornsen at -1.
That Vilips, Beber-Frankel, MT class could be very good.
Beber-Frankel flirted with a 59 a month ago.
could be very good.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-13-2019

Hulk, #4 played four strokes easier than #2.  The Stanford players except for Vilips all played the easier #4 course yesterday. Scoring will be tougher today.

In fact, Salinda has 2 doubles and is 6 over for the day through 15. He seems unlikely to qualify for match play.

Vilips on the other hand is 4 under on #4 through 15. He is moving closer to where the cut line might be.

Wu seems solid. 8 pars and a bogey through 9 holes.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-13-2019

Looks like the cut could be +4.
Salinda is +4 with one hole to play.
Villips is +3 and playing the easier course, #4

Thornbjornsen is -1, has to play all 18 of Pinehurst #2
Shimp is +1, same challenge left.
Wu is -4, still leads, eight holes left on #2.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-13-2019

Wow, Vilips birdied his final hole to tie Wu's course record on #4 with a 65. He is definitely advancing at +2.

Salinda birdied his final hole (first birdie in the round since his first hole) and is likely to advance at +3.

Thorbjornsen has yet to right the ship after a triple bogey on the 2nd hole. He is +4 on the day (+3 overall) after 7 holes.

Shimp also slipping back toward the cut line at +3 on the day after 8 holes.

Wu finished with 72 today and may win the medal at -3.

Ng finished birdie-birdie to finish at +5. Probably will miss the cut, but nice comeback to get close.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-13-2019

Looks like the cut could move to +$.
Ng would be in.
Walker and Walker seems the only strong threats to tie or lead.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - winflop - 08-13-2019

A dozen or so players still need to finish on Wednesday. Cut line moved to +5

Made Cut
Brandon Wu -3 FIRST PLACE
Karl Vilips +2
Isiaiah Salinda +3
Henry Shimp +3

Missed Cut
Ethan Ng +5 - eliminated in playoff (27 players for 3 spots)
Michael Thorbjornsen +7
Nate Menon +11

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-14-2019

They finally completed the stroke play. Brandon Wu was in fact the medalist. He earns a nice commemorative medal from the USGA for the lowest qualifying score. He is the #1 seed in match play. He plays his round of 64 match against an opponent yet to be determined. 27 players are currently vying for the final 3 spots. Whoever gets the final spot will play Wu.

Henry Shimp plays his round of 64 match vs. Blake Hathcoat from St. Marys.

Isiaiah Salinda plays Travis Vick, an incoming freshman at Texas. Another chance for Salinda to knock off a UT golfer after the NCAA championship match.

Karl Vilips plays Jansen Smith from Texas Tech.

Ethan Ng actually made the 27-for-3 playoff but was eliminated when he bogeyed the first hole.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-15-2019

Vilips three under and four up after six.

Salinda even and even after nine.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-15-2019

For those not following the match play results closely, #1 seed Brandon Wu lost yesterday to the guy who was the final qualifier in the 27 for 3 playoff. It was a very close match, but Wu never led.

Shimp also never led and did not make a single birdie all day in his round of 64 match. He still took his match to the 18th hole but lost 1 up.

Salinda had to win 17 and 18 (with a par and a birdie) to win his match 1 up. Very dramatic finish.

Vilips never trailed and won 2 and 1.

In the round of 32, Salinda and Vilips both won. Salinda won 1 up, Vilips 3 and 1.

In the round of 16 being played now, Salinda is up against Palmer Jackson who will be a frosh at Notre Dame. Yes, he is named for Arnold Palmer.

Vilips is playing Brad Dalke who just finished his career at Oklahoma. Dalke made it all the way to the US Amateur finals in 2016 before losing.

FS1 has live coverage starting at 1 pm pacific.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - oldalum - 08-15-2019

At the moment, Vilips is 2 up thru 13, and Salinda 1 down thru 15.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Viking_Guy - 08-15-2019

Salinda shanked his tee shot on 18, then overhit a recovery into the far side rough, and lost 2 down.

Oh, and the Vilips kid?  Two up teeing off with the honor on the 213-yard par 3 17th.  Over and around some trees.  To about 5 feet.  Opponent misses birdie attempt, and Vilips knocks it in to win 3 and 1.

Salinda also missed a ton of putts in the 5-10 foot range. His opponent left the door open by making 4 bogeys on the back 9. Salinda won all of those holes. However Salinda made 5 bogeys himself and lost all of those holes.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - Viking_Guy - 08-15-2019

Spiny--

Yep, Isaiah didn't have his putter today, and failed to take advantage of a lot of chances.  He finished bogie bogie birdie par bogie bogie, three over on the last six.

The tee shot on 18 was notable because his opponent had already put his ball in the woods, and Salinda took it into "hold my beer" territory.  He had to hit first on his attempted recovery from a bad spot, ending up trying to just center his ball hitting a low runner across the fairway, and overhit it through the rough into the far side scrub.  Then hit his third to just off the front edge, about 80 feet from the cup.  His opponent knew all he had to do was hit a safe recovery layup, then get close, and force Salinda to hole his chip shot.

More generally, the leaders in stroke play vanished.  Highest finisher is now #12 out of 64, and only one of the top ten, #2 Ricky Castillo, made it to the round of 16.

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - winflop - 08-16-2019

Isaiah is on the bubble to make the Walker Cup team. Brandon Wu is a lock.

The silver lining - incoming frosh Karl Vilips made the quarters

RE: Mens Golf - US Amateur - oldalum - 08-16-2019

The guy who qualified #64 and beat Wu in the round of 64 also made the quarters.

Well, at least I won't have to give up several hours of yard work time this weekend for the Men's Amateur the way I did last weekend to watch the Women's Amateur.

Stanford has left the building...

Vilips was 3 down after 6 holes and never got closer. Lost 4&3
