NCAA survey re attending tourneys -
M T - 08-15-2019
FYI, I got an email from the NCAA (I confirmed that) inviting me to take a survey regarding WBB. I normally avoid all such surveys but I took it. Here is what it surveyed. It was clear that some of this survey is used for multiple team sports with a tournament structure.
I copied the questions to here so all could see what they're interested in. Answers do affect subsequent questions.
The question that seemed weirdest was #14. One hour?
At least for me, the important part is not the championship, but whether my team is playing. I didn't see a question except 17 that was sensitive to that. Would I drive 20 minutes to see USF play SJS in WBB? Probably not. Would I drive 6 hours to see my team play in the NC game? Definitely.
- Your zip.
- How would you rate your general interest in women's or girl's basketball at the following levels: (pre-HS, HS, College, Olympic, Pro: 1-5 each)
- In an average season, how many women’s or girl’s basketball games do you go to at the following levels: (pre-HS, HS, College, Olympic, Pro: 0 - 10+)
- Thinking only of college-level women's basketball games, in an average year, how many times do you…? (0 - 10+)

- (if Yes) Which school year did you most recently attend the NCAA DI Women’s Basketball Championship?
- As well as most recent year, which other years did you go to the championship? Check all the years.
- How much did you pay for your ticket last time you attended? [I had to guess]
- What was the face value of your ticket? (If known)
- What is the furthest you have traveled to go to any NCAA DI Women’s Basketball Championship?
- When going to the NCAA DI Women’s Basketball Championship, did you ever…? (travel by plane; stay in hotel, etc; neither)
- Next year, which NCAA championship(s) would you be VERY LIKELY to attend if they were held within a one hour drive of your home and you were able to get tickets? - When buying tickets for the year you most recently attended, did you get tickets from: (NCAA, School, venue, 17 more)
- Had you previously bought your tickets through an official NCAA ticket source? [Huh? Same year? Must mean an earlier year]
- Please check all the reasons you go to sources other than the NCAA to buy your tickets.
- If there are other reasons you go to non-NCAA sources for tickets, please explain here:

When I was a grad student at the University of Memphis, one of the profs in my program was in charge of surveys at NCAA Championships. They used to do on-site interviews. Probably have given way to emailed surveys these days.

Well, I did drive 40 minutes to watch Clemson play Alabama in the football national title, so I am not entirely immune from watching a good game if it is conveniently located.

It wasn't a
close game, but it was a hell of a fun game to watch, especially since I wound up in the Clemson section (it was chance). There was much rejoicing.

Well, this is clearly all about tournament marketing as far as demographics, location and pricing goes. As you point out, the major flaw is it doesn't really consider team loyalty as a motivating factor. This is really pretty amateurish stuff. I wonder if they have the data analytics skills to do much with the responses.

Unfortunately, surveys seem to be proliferating in all venues these days. Every website seems to have the desire to collect information. The question of what one can possibly derive from this information, even with any amount of analysis, is often unclear. In many cases, I believe these surveys are used to justify an action that benefits some subgroup inside the organization. The "result" of the selected action can't really be evaluated, because the factors "measured" in any survey are functions many things (even if just time). So, victory is declared and a new survey released to "improve" the situation. The only for sure winners are the folks getting paid to run the survey.
