OT: Comic Con, Trekkies and The CARDboard - CardinalSagehen - 08-18-2019

My son and I were comp’ed tickets to Comic Con at the San Jose Convention Center today.  It wasn’t how I’d planned to spend our Sunday afternoon, but he’s interested so we’re going to check it out.

As we considered attending, my thoughts turned to the classic SNL skit with William Shatner, “Trekkies”, which gets really funny around the 3-minute mark. I suspect that most of us are relatively well adjusted adults that have kissed a girl (or boy) at some point in our lives.

But I pose the question - are we to Stanford Football as Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon are to Star Trek mania in this skit? Tracking shreds of off-season reports as Nealon tracks the newborn colts on Shatner’s farm?

One good thing - the season starts in less than two weeks, and then we’ll have something “real” to discuss, right?!

Of course, but who cares?

Here's a fun take from the British chat show.  The host is genial and at the end of the show, he invites audience guests to sit in a red chair, tell a story, and if he doesn't find it amusing enough, he flips them over.  This version is about Dr. Who and two Americans who participate (the Americans show up at the 1:10 mark and continue through the end).

Hey, we are the Cardboard.  If ever there is a deep dive into Stanford sports, it should happen here.  ALL RIGHT NOW!

Couldn’t agree more! Sports, like sci-fi and fantasy, are a great diversion.

Moving back to Comic Con, we hit the show today, and life imitated art from the SNL skit.  The actor that played John Connor as a boy in Terminator 2 was asked whether he still visits the real scene of the famous motorcycle chase from the movie, and he responded loudly and unapologetically with, “NERD!! Yeah, I go there every week after rewatching the movie.” Funny, but rude. This drew an uncomfortable laugh from the crowd, after which the super-fans continued to ask a series of similarly oddball questions.

Only half of my attention was focused on the questions for the Terminator panel - I felt badly for the nerds, in between my nerdy contemplation of the status of our offensive line...

I hit the Stones' concert at Levi's. Amazing how Jagger still moves and sings for a man in his mid-70s. Keith looked like you'd think someone with all his "life experiences" should.

Enjoyable concert.

Not only rude, but innaccurate and foolish.  Zealous scifi fans are called "geeks."  Geeks may also be nerds, but not necessarily.

Foolish because the primary reason for most celebrities to guest appear at comicons is to make money from their fans.  They do this through appearance fees, merchandise sales, and paid autographs.  There is big money to be earned by even marginal celebs.  Insulting fans is biting the hand that feeds you.
