Some Stanford related ones (we are in the list of overrated teams):
Quote:Stanford: That schedule is just so brutal. Northwestern in Week 1? Back-to-back road games at USC and UCF followed by Oregon in Week 4? If it wasn't for a game against Oregon State, it wouldn't surprise me if the Cardinal finished September with a losing record. And things don't get much easier with Notre Dame at the end of the season. Yes, quarterback K.J. Costello is legit, but how will the offense look without a proven running back? The Cardinal relied more on the pass last season with Bryce Love hampered by injuries, so it's certainly possible to do it again, but that's not been this program's bread-and-butter. And can the defense improve? A once-stout unit has oddly been more susceptible against the run over the past couple of seasons. That's a lot of question marks to answer in the top-heavy Pac-12 North with a tough nonconference slate. We can no longer just give the Cardinal the benefit of the doubt. -- Ben Kercheval
And one that will warm winflop's heart:
Quote:Jerry Palm: The Pac-12 will be looking for a new commissioner to replace Larry Scott before the year is out.

Yes, absolutely. Stanford is going to be so weak that teams will be able to play their second string most of the game just to get those players some experience. Opponents don't need to scheme on defense because Stanford cannot run the ball and has no proven receivers to catch the ball. Besides, Costello will not be able to throw the ball because Stanford has no offensive line to block for him. It will be sack city. On top of that, Stanford cannot stop the run, so teams need not worry about preparing a game plan on offense. Just run, run, run, TD.
JUST USE THE STANFORD WEEK TO GIVE YOUR PLAYERS SOME NEEDED R&R.

Brilliant!
I don't know if it's Shaw's style, but there's plenty of bulletin board material to work with this season.

I beg to differ. Until we fail to win 9 games, people should, in fact, just give the Cardinal the benefit of the doubt. It's rational.
We still have a roster with talent rated in the top 25, a consistent program, and a strong, steady leader that doesn't let us beat ourselves. It's not like we're being ranked in the top 10, either - we're at #25. With just 8 wins, which I admit will be very difficult to achieve against our schedule, we'd probably deserve that kind of ranking (and not get it.)
Anyone calling us overrated is comparing us to outdated expectations that nobody seems to have this year, or they're rating us based on crude absolutes like the projected number of losses. Are we overrated vs. the Vegas expectation of 6.5 wins? I don't think so.

Yeah, I agree that was an odd quote. If any team deserves the benefit of the doubt for outperforming when the doubters proclaimed "
this season is when Stanford will finally revert" year after year after year, it is Shaw's Stanford teams. Like, compared to most on this board, I am pretty bearish on the team next year, but the fact that Shaw's teams have come through in the face of doubt in the past, is one of the strongest arguments against my bearishness.

I'd consider 6-6 or worse a reversion. Anything better than that is at or above my expectations of 7-5

My heart is never warmed by someone losing their job. But Scott has abjectly failed to deliver and the conference needs a stronger commissioner who will forcefully stand up for it on the national stage, and it needs to relocate to a lower-cost city

And it's not as if Scott and his family will be in line for food stamps should he lose his job.
IMHO it's hard to say if his tenure thus far has been a net positive.

I think that depends greatly on who you ask. If you ask the University Presidents & AD's, he's a net positive. He's brought in some big bucks, although the future looks pretty bleak on that front. If you ask fans, he's likely a net negative. He doesn't stand up for the conference with any kind of strength - either to the networks or the CFP. He made some terrible business decisions on the CCG in Levi's and putting the conference & network in the most expensive place he possibly could. The TV contract, while lucrative, completely hosed fans with late kickoffs and 6-day windows.

As always, claiming the schedule is tough has nothing to do with being overrated or not.

Another preview (from bleecher report)
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2850014-pac-12-football-preview-and-predictions-for-2019-season#slide9
We are listed as one of the challengers and predicted to finish 8-4 (6-3).
Stanford Cardinal
Quote:Stanford has won at least eight games in 10 consecutive seasons and spent at least one week in the top 15 of the AP poll each of those years. Only a fool would write off David Shaw and the Cardinal, especially when they boast returning stars like quarterback K.J. Costello, tight end Colby Parkinson, offensive tackle Walker Little and cornerback Paulson Adebo.
The Cardinal did lose a lot from last season, including leading rusher Bryce Love and all three of their top receivers: JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Trenton Irwin and Kaden Smith. But if they're able to have better injury luck along the offensive line and get back to doing their usual thing in the running game, they'll be better than fine.
As is the case for USC, the difficulty of the schedule is probably the biggest concern here. Stanford hosts Northwestern and Notre Dame and travels to UCF in nonconference play, and it has a difficult Pac-12 slate. Per ESPN's FPI projections, it has between a 32.4 and 75.4 percent chance of winning each game in what will be one coin flip after another for three months.
