Our Punting Worries Me - GK3 - 09-01-2019

Now I can see why Shaw did a very UnShaw like thing and for for 4th and 4.  Last year we could pretty much count on being able to put an opponent inside his 10.  This year looks like an adventure I would rather not undertake.  Shaw kept saying how good he is, and maybe he is and what we saw today was only youth and inexperience.  I hope that turns out to be the case.

Yes, I think we are going to really miss Bailey.  Without him, several wins last season would have been losses.

Ryan Sanborn didn't have a great day, but he's a freshman who didn't fumble the snap on the last punt. I was actually pretty worried something would go horribly wrong.

True.  I had that Michigan-Michigan State game finale in mind from a couple years ago.  Harbaugh's face after that gaffe is still fresh in my mind.  And the Wolverine surrender-cobras went viral.

They say that the greatest improvement during a season happens from the first game to the second game.  To me, it seems like a lot of Stanford's mistakes can be chalked up to a lack of game experience, adrenaline and the need to make some fine tuning adjustments.  I doubt his punting will be similarly mediocre against USC.

I'm far more concerned about the coaching decisions on when to punt and when to kick a FG. And that's not a first game to second game thing. That's a Shaw thing.

IIRC, the first punt seemed well angled and NU started at their 15. Not the 5 or 10, but inside the 20.

I agree that we don’t want to read too much into the guy’s first game, but it was really, really bad. I didn’t see any hang time, distance or placement on any of the punts. Between the touchbacks and the line drives, we netted so little yardage.   Punting is essential to Shaw’s field position, aka turtling, strategy. There was even a line drive punt during crunch time that led to a big NW return and great field position. We were spoilt with Bailey, a H.eisman-worthy punter.  I know Sanborn will improve, though.

Agreed completely.  There were some headscratchers in some early decisions to refrain from field goal attempts.  And Toner's 51 yard successful attempt was at least another 10 yards in the air.

Yeah, well perhaps the silver lining in the cloud is maybe the fact that we no longer have a punter who can pin the opponents inside their ten will encourage Shaw to try more long field goals (which Toner is capable of making).

I must admit that I sometimes think Shaw says " Watch this. I am going to punt. The Cardboard will go crazy". It must be something like this, as I can see no other possible reason not to try a FG from the 34, unless Toner also got hurt somehow?????

Last year we could punt from the 35 and probably put the opponent inside the 10, often the 5 with Bailey.  It does not appear we will have the luxury, so I can see more 4th down calls, and field goals if punting remains such an adventure.  This years defense doesn't need the extra 20 yards to stop the other team.
