glad I didn't book flights to Vancouver yet! Will be interesting to see details on hotels etc. as the University does not appear to be centrally located. Now on to cancel my Vancouver hotel...

If you have never been to Victoria and can afford it, stay at the Empress, which is a historic slice of England. Be sure to have High Tea there.

And allow enough time to visit Butchardt gardens outside of town--some of the most famous gardens in the world, although I'm not sure how they will be at that time of year.

The Parliament building and the Royal British Columbia Museum are fabulous and within walking distance of the Empress.

The airport is a considerable distance north. The University is closer but off to the NE of downtown. Their website says the university has a major transit hub, with lots of bus routes running out there. I haven't been there.

You can also fly in to Seattle and take the 3 hour ferry ride from Seattle to Victoria, if you don't want to fly in to Victoria. The ferry deposits you within a block or two of the Empress. I've taken the ferry from Port Angeles, but Port Angeles is many hours away from any airport and is best done as part of a road trip. If coming from Seattle, 3 hours is a LONG time to be on a boat, in my opinion, particularly if the swells get high, but it ought to be a very pretty voyage through the islands. There is probably also a ferry from Vancouver you could do if you are already committed to that city.

To be honest, from the standpoint of fans this is a FANTASTIC destination and one that a lot of people from the Bay Area may not yet have experienced. If I were not working I would go, and allow a few days to be a tourist up there.
