Swan out at USC

RE: OT USC AD - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 09-09-2019

20 years ago I played a round of golf with Lynn Swann and remember him as a great guy. We talked about his time at Serra High School and he asked me lots of questions about Tiger Woods golf game. At that time I think Swann's primary job was working as a t.v. football analyst.
When he was hired as AD at USC I figured it was a good fit that would last a long time. What happened ?

RE: OT USC AD - BostonCard - 09-09-2019

Probably the academic scandal. Lots of SC athletic teams implicated, and because celebs were involved, SC became the poster child of the scandal. I think a lot of this predated Swann, so my guess is that he is very much the scapegoat.

I’m old enough to remember when Pat Haden was brought in and was supposed to be the savior.

This may have started before Swann but many of the admitted students happened under his watch. Most other schools the scandal seemed to be only with one or two programs/coaches but at U$C it was more than that. Wouldn't surprise me that this is what's behind his resignation

yes, the prime mover at USC was a senior athletic department administrator, and there were more students involved.

Swann is 67 now so I don’t think he was realistically going to be there that much longer.

Ted Leland may be available. God strike me dead if he has passed away.

He's tanned, rested, and ready. He was seated two rows behind me at the Northwestern game.
My fellow season ticketholder is active with his regional alumni club, has interacted with TL in the past, so he waved to him and pointed him out to me. Unfortunately, I still bear the scars of the Buddy and Walt years, so my immediate reaction was not that of excitement.

During Leland's time, I think Deb Gore Mann was a Stanford assistant AD. USF hired her as AD and it was a tumultuous few years, including one of the school's top financial donors (the late Art Zief) writing a manifesto on why she should be fired from her job, and handing out copies of same from his court side seat at a USF basketball game.

RE: OT USC AD - BobK - 09-10-2019

To be clear Stanford has many AADs but yes the former Stanford WBB player was as you say.

RE: OT USC AD - Phogge - 09-10-2019

Gaillard and Belluomeny(sp) ruined USF for all time. Quinton Dailey drove the final nail in. They do have a nice little ballpark however.

A new university president came online in August. She came from North Carolina where she was instrumental in cleaning up the aftermath of their educational scandal. Likely a good point in time for Swann to be eased out tastefully while the new gal brings in her own folks.

An interesting backstory:

Let's not forget Cheryl Levick. 12 years at Stanford as AAD, foisted upon SCU as AD for four years, then St. Louis for three years, U of Maryland for two years, then Georgia State for four years, then unhireable.

I remember that, although I think Fr. LoSchiavo was more to blame. Sad story. First great basketball team I saw was the 29-win USF Dons with Bill Cartwright, Marlon Redmond, Chubby Cox, Winford Boynes and James Hardy. Boynes, Hardy and Cartwright were 1st round picks, Cox was an 8th round pick, and Redmond was a 3rd round pick. All five made NBA rosters.

Dailey, in 1982, was USF's last pick.

RE: OT USC AD - Phogge - 09-11-2019

Father Lo had to act. The recruitment of Hardy, Boynes and Cartwright was about as subtle as Red Sanders at UCLA. It was all on Gaillard Mick.

Preceding the names you mention were Phil Smith, Joe Ellis, Bill Russell and more.
For the past few years, with Kyle Smith as USF's head coach the program was on the upswing but Washington State hired him away and now former St. Mary's point guard Todd Golden has the job.

RE: OT USC AD - Phogge - 09-11-2019

I saw Russ and KC many times at Kezar Pavillion. Phil Woolpert was a great recruiter and an apostle of Pete Newell when Pete was at USF and Phil at SI. As far as I know neither cheated.

I live in SF and have attended many USF basketball games. One of my favorites was about 12 years ago when Newell arranged for Bob Knight's Texas Tech team to play USF. The gym was packed with great energy (everybody wanted to see Bob Knight) and Jerome Gumbs (a career 5 points per game Dons player) had the game of his life to score about 35 points and lead USF's win.
Another strong memory I have is Deb Gore Mann firing Jesse Evans on Christmas Eve and hiring the legendary retired OK State coach Eddie Sutton to finish out the season. Sutton lived for two months at the Fisherman's Wharf Holiday Inn and got his 500th career victory. It was remarkable how quickly he had USF's roster playing traditional old school textbook basketball (boxing out for rebounds, player movement, ball movement, proper defense etc...).

RE: OT USC AD - Phogge - 09-12-2019

Russell was the greatest defensive player ever and KC did not get enough credit. In the Dons first championship he was stuck on glue to that seasons college POY Tom Gola of LaSalle. The next year KC was ineligible for the post season and Gene Brown took over. Another title. Woolpert got tired and resigned a couple of years later. In those days USF didn’t even have a gym. They practiced at SI and played at Kezar and the Cow Palace. Great days to be a kid in The City and watch Russ dominate.

Great stuff Phogge, thank you. If you don't mind , please write what you recall about SI's gymnasium. I only know SI's current 37th Avenue campus.
The "old SI" became part of USF's campus?
I am not sure if any high school's are still using Kezar's gym. Kezar football field is home to Sacred Heart Cathedral. Visiting teams are thrilled to play a game there as it a place with history about which their parents and grandparents told them . Also, these days a grass football field is rare, and Kezar's is very well maintained, beautiful.

RE: OT USC AD - Phogge - 09-12-2019

SI's gym still exists but the old school building I attended has been replaced by an activities center for the university. The gym was the most modern of our buildings and the cafeteria might have been built by Etruscans. Unbelievably bad food in a dank setting. Most of the city gyms in the playgrounds (Sunset, Glen Park etc) had the old and small wooden backboards but we had glass. Pull out bleachers and a small stage but good lighting and lively floor. No AAA games were played there and most of our games at Kezar. Same with football, Kezar was our home field. Lincoln, Washington, Balboa and Galileo had their own fields and we usually got into a fight at Bal. Kezar was a mud bowl from October on. Two AAA games a week, CCSF on Friday night and the Niners on Sundays. By November there was not a blade of grass between the twenties. Great city then and good athletics across the board but now the AAA is terrible.
