Urban Meyer to USC: Would they do it? -
Goose - 10-13-2019
There is some "buzz" in the press and on USC web sites that Urban Meyer is a done deal/possible choice/??? to replace Clay Helton. I have no idea if Helton is going to be replaced or that Meyer is interested in the position. However, I am interested in what people think is politically acceptable at the moment. I would think nobody would touch Meyer as a coach with a 10 meter pole. However, does winning forgive all sins? I would think at least a "decent interval" would be required, but maybe that is just me.

This seems unlikely until USC hires a new permanent AD. You would think that hiring SC’s next coach is going to be deferred to the new AD, so that he (or she) can bring in his own man, so to speak. That could be Meyer, or it could be someone else, or maybe Helton manages to hang on to the job.

Totally agree that, baring some scandal or total meltdown, Helton will not be fired by the interim AD. BC, do you think that the new AD could hire Meyer, with all his baggage, at USC, with all their baggage? I wonder if the new president would allow it, just because of the optics. I am for sure no expert at reading the "Yuk" level of such a hire. We may never know, as Meyer may really want to stay in the booth right now. I am interested in what people on this board think about this possibility. From what you wrote, I gather you think USC might actually do it, if they can?

Those in SoCal still believe that SC job is a destination job for top tier coaches nationwide.
The reality is that none of the Pac-12 jobs are top tier destinations right now for a lot of reasons.
AND USC will be living with investigation and potential probation challenges for years that will hinder recruiting of the best players.
Worse, the 2.5 NFL teams now in the area are already impacting attendance and local enthusiasm for USC. Gone are the days when USC could tell recruits that SC was the best football franchise (college or pro) in the nation's #2 media market.
Still, despite the obvious negatives to the SC job for 2020 and beyond, I am confident that those in the LA basin will continue to claim that every high profile coach is on the verge of taking the SC offer. I do suspect that some high profile coaches WILL express interest in the job, if only to make sure their real target program gives them their best possible offer. ($$$, control, etc.)
The same thing happened the last few times the position was open, and the coaches they ultimately hired were not exactly the cream of the crop.

There were so many red shirts in the LA Coliseum today, it looked like a home game for the 49ers. Check it out:

Completely agree BC. On some level, the longer the AD search goes, the better the chance that SC has to keep Helton for 2020, if anything, to allow the new AD to make his/her own hire.

Whether the AD candidates would hire Urban Meyer if available would be an interesting question to ask them, and a test for whether the new president--who was hired to right the ship and sail the straight and narrow--is willing to accept a compromise for football as one of her first major actions. I suspect it would be such a bad look for her that it won't happen, but at USC you never know.

He is a scary good coach. I don't want him in the Pac-12, unless he's on our side. I'M NOT SAYING I WANT HIM TO REPLACE COACH SHAW. I just don't want us to have to beat a team he coaches, every season.

If there is one board topic I can't stand more than any other, it's what coach might at some point become the head guy at (insert program you hate and/or fear).
I'd rather discuss divisive political issues and religion.
Why care about what USC does? You think they care what Stanford is doing?

The good news for you is that nothing is forcing you into threads you don't care about or can't stand. There's lots of stuff many of us don't care about or find tiresome/repetitive. The rest of us just don't visit said threads. A friendly suggestion is that you try the same, and let those who want to talk about this talk about it.
And a simple search suggests that yes, U$C is very much concerned with who we're recruiting, how we're doing, and what kind of media narratives Stanford generates vs. U$C:

Hey OF, I would talk divisive politics and religion anytime. I just won’t do it on Thunderdome.
If SC is looking I would recommend that they interview Robert Salah. He has EUTM in his DNA. How that translates to recruiting and alum smoozing is the job of a search committee to discover.

Interesting stat (hat tip to Wilner's hotline)
Quote:Since Helton was named permanent coach late in the 2015 season, the Trojans have played 19 games against Power Five competition without Darnold.
In those games, USC is 6-13, with seven losses by 10+ points.
