Pick your all time Stanford team -
lex24 - 10-23-2019
Let’s have some fun. Its my post so I get to set the rules. First, you must have seen the player. So when you post give an indication of your first remembrance. Second 12 players on offense and defense (a “flex” on offense and a nickel on defense.) Third, Stanford career only. NFL doesn’t count. Fourth, front seven on defense may be a 4-3 or 3-4. Linebackers can be inside or outside. Safeties need not be free and strong. 1 kicker. 1 punter.
My first memories are from ‘66

RB: Darrin Nelson
FB Jon Ritchie (best blocking FB I ever saw)

i'll go with Elway at QB.
i agree 100% about Chase Beeler at center. he was truly underrated.
also agree with Ertz at TE and David DeCastro at guard, as well as Veris on the D-line, and John Lynch at safety.
and Jake Bailey sure got us out of some uncomfortable situations as our punter.

Should have listed returners. McCaffrey both Kickoffs and Punts. Although I loved how relaxed Drew Terrell was catching punts. I mean it has to be somewhat terrifying to have 10 extremely large athletic human beings with evil intent racing to rip your head off while you’re trying to catch a ball. Drew looked so damn relaxed. I don’t think he ever dropped a punt.

1953 Stanford beats UCLA
1970 Plunkett TD pass Stanford to the Rose Bowl
1999 Casey Moore runs to the Roses.
So agree best ballboy ever, Lex

Looking back at Elway, found this article from way back, especially like his performance in his first game. Love that he broke fingers on two receivers his first practice and the "cross":

Elway maybe the most talented ever at his position. Garrett was tougher. I still pick Plunkett. A man among boys. A winner.
Same for Muster. Shame he was hurt his senior year. Missed half the season.
John Sande obliterated Stillwagon in the Rose Bowl.

CB Simons last pro team was the San Jose Apaches coached by Bill Walsh

Stanford only. Plunkett won the Voldemort. That ends the discussion for me. Elway obviously wins if you include NFL.

Great article. I’m a brobdingnagian Elway fan. Remember the first time I saw him it was a very early practice his freshman year. Quarterbacks were throwing long fly patterns and Schonert and the other quarterbacks ( I actually think Laufenberg and Rogers may still have been there but I may be wrong) all through nice long arching 50 yard passes. Then it would be always turn the heat essentially throw a 50 yard rope. There was literally gasps in the audience – that was before Fort Dohower.
I heard a story at the Hall of Fame dinner in which Elway was inducted. I actually went for someone else – but got to hear it. His offensive coordinator, of course, was Jim Fassel. The kick off return team asked Elway to throw the ball down to the goal line. I don’t know why they weren’t using a kicker. So Elway lined up the 40 and arched the ball to about the 5. Kick off return coach asked if he could get there a little farther. So he lined up and threw it to the goal line. kick off coach asked if he could throw it a little bit farther. so he threw the next ball through the goal posts over the fence and into the parking lot. Story may have been apocryphal – but frankly I don’t think there was anything Elway could not do on a football field. Without question the most exciting quarterback I’ve ever seen. No one else comes close. Had he played with the Niners and Walsh, I think they’d have won about 7 SBs.

Jumping in late to this thread. I started following Stanford football in 1996, so all of my selections are from no earlier than that.
QB: Andrew Luck
HB: Toby Gerhart
FB: Owen Marecic
Flex: Christian McCaffrey (Imagine Toby bulldozing runners and then bringing in McCaffrey and having him run right past them.)
WR: Troy Walters
WR: J.J. Arcega-Whiteside (I wanted a big possession-style WR to complement the small field-stretching style of Walters. Bradford, Pitts, and either Whalen would have sufficed.)
TE: Zach Ertz (There are SO many talented TEs to chose from)
LT: Jonathan Martin
LG: Eric Heitman
C: Chase Beeler
RG: David DeCastro
RT: Andrus Peat
DT: Solomon Thomas
DT: Willie Howard (This might have been more of a sentimental pick than anything else)
DE: Kailee Wong
DE: Chase Thomas
LB: Ben Gardner
LB: Shayne Skov
LB: Trent Murphy
CB: Richard Sherman
CB: Michael Thomas
S: Delano Howell
S: Tank Williams
Nickel: Quenton Meeks
K: Nate Whitaker
P: Jake Bailey
KR: Chris Owusu
PR: Troy Walters
Special teams rusher: Emory Brock
Head coach: Shaw
Best performances during the that time span: 2010 Big Game, 2011 Orange Bowl, 2016 Rose Bowl
Most thrilling games: 2001 vs. Oregon, 2011 vs. USC, 2015 vs. Notre Dame

Had to get in on this. I have some memories of Elway and I just missed Vardel, Whitfield, Ron George and Lunch. I have been following since '94.
QB: Luck
HB: Gerhart and CMac (funnest Stanford players I ever watched)
FB: Marecic
WR: JJAWS
WR: Pitts
WR: Trent Irwin (Probably my favorite receiver. Hogan owes him like 6-8 TDs.)
TE: Fleener
T: Peat and Murphy
G: DeCastro and Heitman (our two best OL players)
C: Beeler
Yes I know the math does not work out but it's my team and this is fun.
Others in mind: Teyo Johnson, Ertz, Walters, the Whalens, Joshua Garnett, Chris Owusu, Ty Montgomery, Justin Armour, Chad Hutchinson and Borchard. I liked a lot of those RBs Ty Willingham had like Kimble, Mitchell, Bookman, Carter.
DL: Willie Howard, Solomon Thomas, Harrison Phillips
OLB: Trent Murphy, Riall Johnson
ILB: Shane Skov (might be my all-time favorite player), Clint Snyder
CB: Adebo, Meeks
S: Tank Williams, Justin Reid
Others: Delano Howard, Anderson, Okereke, AJ Tarpley (I swear I never saw him miss a tackle), Chase Thomas, Wayne Lyons (if only for the potential).
K: Ukropina
P: Bailey
KOR: Chris Owusu
Shoutout to Brandon Simmons, our best defensive special teamer ever.

WR - Troy Walters, James Lofton
RB - Christian McCaffrey, Darin Nelson
TE - Zach Ertz
T - Bob Whitfield, Andrus Peat
G - David DeCastro, Joshua Garnett
C - Chris Dahlman
DL - Solomon Thomas, Garin Veris, Kailee Wong
LB - Gordy Ceresino, Trent Murphy, Ron George, Shayne Skov
CB - Darrien Gordon, Toi Cook
S - John Lynch, Tank Williams
PK - Ukropina
P- Bailey

Who would you select to return kicks? Some great choices available from recent times.
KR - McCaffrey, Chris Owusu, Ty Montgomery, Damon Dunn, TJ Rushing
PR - Glyn Milburn, Luke Powell. McCaffrey deserves consideration at a minimum for his one electric PR in the Rose Bowl.

My first exposure to Stanford football was the 1970/71 season. I would nominate that entire team and their coaches. They changed the arc of the program's performance and re-established the our ability to compete for national attention. John Ralston is my favorite Stanford coach and Thunder Chickens is my favorite identity.

Excellent...but I also have to tip the hat to an old friend and former manager of the '70 team, Chris Morrison. When the team was ensconced in Rickey's Hyatt House before a game, he is remembered for choosing the Friday night movie, which he promised would be the greatest comedy they had ever seen. It was the Zero Mostel/Gene Wilder original "The Producers". The (then) Indians absolutely HATED it! The resultant anger and violence propelled them to the Rose Bowl.
RIP, Mo-reese!
