Washington State coach Mike Leach ripped his players after the team's 33-20 loss to the Cal Bearson Saturday night.
According to Spokesman-Review beat writer Theo Lawson, reporters were kept waiting while Leach spent over half an hour tearing into the Cougars.

We definitely regressed," Leach said in the postgame press conference. "Somehow, it's got to be meaningful enough to the players, and as coaches we've got to make it meaningful. We pretend it's meaningful and we'll pretend to try hard. As soon as it gets difficult, then we wilt."

He was even more direct in his postgame radio appearance on Washington State IMG Sports Network. When asked how he could get players to "believe" in his message, Leach responded: "Well, that’s a great question because we as coaches think about that, talk about that, all the time. And somehow we’ve failed to reach the group. Our team leaders in the group; they’re either frauds, or they haven’t reached the group either."

Matchup sucks. WSU is great at attacking middle of field. Stanford can’t defend it. Cal, amazingly, has allowed WSU 3, 19 and 20 points (6 on a last second meaningless TD and 2 on a score after a blocked xtra point).   They simply match up well and Wilcox obviously knows how to defend that offense. I don’t expect a whole lot next week. Unfortunately. I can’t stand Leach.

Leach does not lose gracefully. Then again, there is the saying "You show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser".

I'm not sure that his strategy will inspire his players to go the extra mile for him, but I guess we'll see on Saturday.

I'm definitely concerned about next Saturday.
If Wazzu plays the way they did against Oregon or Colorado and we play the way we did against Colorado or UCLA it could get very ugly.

This is a real interesting situation. Is the problem A) The players aren't giving the appropriate effort, B) the players aren't being "coached up" enough to do the right things, or C)  The players are just not good enough? Leach appears to believe it is A, the players effort, although that may just be window dressing. The fact the DC quit can't help but make one question the defensive coaching the players got both before and after that event. That lends support to B. Previous WSU teams played better defense, but it was both different coaches and different players.  To tell you the truth, I think it is C. Let's hope so. Possibly, it is all of the above.

Yeah, Wazzu's defense isn't very good.
However, neither was Colorado's.
So a lousy Coug defense doesn't reassure me much.
One thing I am very confident about is that Wazzu will put more than 16 points on the board.
So I hope the offense is primed for an Arizona like effort.

However, neither was Colorado's.
So a lousy Coug defense doesn't reassure me much.
One thing I am very confident about is that Wazzu will put more than 16 points on the board.
So I hope the offense is primed for an Arizona like effort.

I watched most of the second half and it’s all of the above. Two of Wazzu defensive players looked particularly inept. #1 who I think was a DB was consistently late to the party on run support, arm tackling and taking wrong angles.  #13 who appeared to be an OLB (hard to tell positions in Wazzu’s non-existent D) was either lazy or just plain slow and literally just stood there while a ball carrier jab-stepped and Ronstadted him (just for you, Teejers!). I mean the guy didn’t even react to the jab-step and just stood there flat footed. I wish I had that on tape as I had never seen matador defense in football before.

And with no DC to hold these guys accountable you can bet their season is circling the drain.

I want to see an Arizona like result. As you might gather from my previous posts, I think we didn't run enough against Colorado. Cal showed that you can run against WSU. That accomplishes three things. If you can control the ball on the ground, you keep WSU from scoring, gives your defense a rest, and scores points. We need to do that. Last year, we threw very aggressively against WSU. This year, we need to pound it more. Cal had success in snapping the ball right when WSU DL shifted. The Cal OL, which also has lots of injuries, blew them off the ball by attacking while they were moving. We have had real problems with the shifting and slanting WSU has done the last few years. This may be something we can use. Our defense isn't as good as Cal's probably, but we should be able to run the ball better than Cal. Keep WSU's offense on the bench a lot and maybe we do hold them down pretty well.

Okay, qwerty, I'll bite.  Does this mean that #13 was being told "you're no good, you're no good, you're no good" or was he feeling "poor poor pitiful me"?
(And yes, I did have a big crush on Linda Ronstadt when I was in junior high.)

I'm laughing at this now, but I suspect I won't be in a pleasant mood this coming Saturday evening.

Well, she doesn't appear in public any more, due to Parkinson's.  However I did see the recent documentary on her life and it's well worth it, a real blast from the past with a lot of great clips from the old days.

My theory on Leach is that he has lost his team. Players and maybe even coaches have tired of his schtick and no longer buy into what he is selling, at least as far as the current incarnation of the Coogs are concerned.

Totally agree. He needs to find the "right" defensive coordinator. If he can, he and his team will be right back in the mix. This is easier said than done however. Grinch made a big difference. Before he got there, WSU had problems on defense. He fixed that situation. Leach got used to having a good defense. Now he doesn't, and is at a loss on how to fix it. I suspect (but don't know) that working for Leach is no picnic. We all know the recruiting issues one faces in Pullman. Getting a good, effective DC in that context will be a challenge.

Friend of a friend is married to one of Leach's assistants.  Concedes that it's a pretty interesting ride with Leach, but he disagrees that Leach has lost the team or that Leach wants out.
