Stanford made up for a lackluster effort in Corvallis with an absolutely gutty win in Seattle.
Stanford rode a Gabe Segal redirect of an absolute bullet by Ousseni Bouda early in the second half to the win. But they had to dodge bullet after bullet to do it. UW had a ball at their feet 5 yards in front of goal in the first that the forward couldn't find before Thomas grabbed it. They had a handful of good chances in the second, the best a clear header on the far post that the defense pressured just enough that it popped over Thomas and spun away about 18 inches off the endline before being cleared away.
More good news: Charlie Wehan got some minutes, and the rumor is that Tanner Beason is supposed to return for Cal on Thursday.
With this result, coupled with UW's collapse against Cal earlier in the week, the Huskies are now 7-2 with a date in Corvallis on Friday. Stanford is 6-1-2 in front of the Big Kick. Stanford can maintain their run of 5 straight conference championships with a win and a UW tie or loss. A Stanford tie and a UW loss would result in a level table, but I think UW would win based on record vs. next highest team - Stanford has two draws vs. the Beavers, while UW would have a win and a loss. UW would win outright if they beat the Beavers.
As a side note, the women's side MAY have gotten the #1 overall seed by dispatching Cal 4-0 on Friday night. Today #1 UVa lost to #3 North Carolina in the finals of the ACC tourney. At this point, I'm really betting that BYU will be the #2 seed in Stanford's bracket - they're ranked #4, unbeaten with 1 tie, but would be #13 in the RPI. Making them the 8 seed would be a nice balance.
Now watch the selection committee drop them to #16... Send USC and UCLA as 4 seeds to two ACC teams, or in Stanford's bracket... and make sure that North Carolina plays a set of patsies until at least the elite 8. To provide competitive balance for the College Cup being at Avaya.

VG, wrt to hosts for the pre-College Cup women's matches, the NCAA write up says, "Second and third round action takes place on Friday Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 24 and is located at eight non-predetermined campus locations. At each site, four teams will compete in a single-elimination second round. Each winning team will advance to the third round, where they will again play a single-elimination match. Winners of third-round games will advance to the national quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals will begin Friday, Nov. 29 and run through the 30th. They will be held at four non-predetermined school sites and winners will advance to the 2019 Division I women's soccer College Cup."
Does this more or less mean that the highest seeded team will host?

It always, to my knowledge, has. Stanford's women should not play another away match until the College Cup - which is 20 miles away.
I worry a little that the committee will give UNC the #1 seed on the strength of its victory over UVa. They were #2 in RPI just behind us and just ahead of UVa. And the RPI will surely like their win over #3 UVa more than our (more impresssive - but does w soccer RPI count margin?) win over #31 Cal. The #1 v. #2 seed matters little, it seems to me ... the difference between the #7 and #8 seed in the quarters (if one gets that far). And the seeding is arbitrary enough that it's hard to know if that would make a difference.
Looked to me as though we started focusing on protecting the lead at about 60 minutes, which seemed way too soon. Happy that it worked out. It makes the Big Game that much bigger!
Tough match but unlike their first meeting at Cagan, UW didn't look like the significantly better team today. I'm not sure why. They did control the ball better than we did, but part of my sense of that may be the last 30 minutes. In the first match, we seemed to be hanging on for dear life all game. This one was, I thought, quite even. We had 10 shots, 3 on goal; they had 12, 5 on goal. Both teams had 3 corners. We had 15 fouls to their 9 - I can't complain much about the center ref, but to a fan's eyes, the calls didn't seem even. (Which means they probably were.)
BTW, in NCAA can a disciplinary committee during the week review video and assess sanctions for bad but uncalled offenses? Ousseni's foot was the victim of what sure looked like a blatant stomp - a red card kind of stomp. (Logan got a straight red for something that looked a lot less serious than that.) I know MLS does it; don't know about NCAA, or, I suppose, Pac 12. But that looked ugly.

I don't know if the NCAA can retroactively discipline, but Jamie Clark could. Trying to remember that infamous incident a few years ago where a women's player yanked an opponent down by her ponytail, but wasn't sent off. IIRC, there was some retroactive discipline, but not sure if school, conference, or NCAA. I think conference.
The difference between #1 overall and #2 overall, I think, is how free the committee then feels to screw around with the other teams in your bracket. It often feels like #1 overalls get protected a bit from "seed shifting" - where the committee moves teams for non-competitive "NCAA priorities." Like trying to minimize air travel. We could very well see Santa Clara (RPI #30, but ranked #20) in the second round at Stanford. AGAIN. Please give us some variability!
It will be interesting to see how they move things around. Conference opponents aren't supposed to meet before the Elite 8, unless there are more than eight teams in. I think the committee will leave out both Utah and Colorado, rather than put in a ninth Pac12 team - they're both on the bubble at #49 and 50 in the RPI.
Xavier and Penn State both scored upset conference championships. So did South Carolina, in a mild upset of Arkansas.
What I think you'll see? UVa #3. South Carolina #4 (gotta get that SEC team in "to grow the game." And I don't think they'll give FSU a third 1 seed for the ACC.) Stanford and UNC a wash, but I think UNC will get it because the Final Four is in San Jose.
#7 - BYU as second seed at Stanford (and watch if they don't jigger Brown as the #3 - they love their "academic contest" storylines.) #8 UCLA (getting the nod over SC by head to head.) #5 FSU to face South Carolina (a bus trip.) #6 maybe Arkansas?
Today's game was more even - similiar number of chances, if Washington's a bit higher quality. The center ref did lean a bit purple - the elbow thrown to the head of Bulut, followed by his being called for a foul, was really tough. And the foot stomp, of course.
