Fast-food shaved RB sandwiches vs aged Prime Rib.

IIRC Lawry’s used to host the “Beef Bowl” with both teams before the Rose Bowl. Do they still do that?

I believe they still do. For a while it was limited portions (they thought promoting gluttony was bad PR) but now it is back to all you can eat.
Been there a couple of times. Great Prime Rib. The best Prime Rib I have ever had, though, was Bully's in San Diego.

Yes, I believe they do.  Too bad our guys won't be participating this year.

And the teams visit Disneyland.

Haven't been to Lawry's but it would be hard to beat House of Prime Rib which unfortunately is on Van Ness which the City of SF is turning into the landing strip on Henderson Field, Guadalcanal circa August 1942.

I make a better prime rib than either place.  All Cardboarders are welcome to come to the BC v Stanford tailgate at my house on Sept 2, 2028 to confirm.

Hey, that's great. I'll put it on my calendar.
Would you mind sharing the recipe? Or is it a personal secret?

But it's so fun playing "army man" on the way to lunch every day.  Van Ness has needed work for many years and I like the other major road improvements that have been done in SF so maybe the pain and years of construction will be worth it.  I give the city credit for at least using some common sense and getting the sewer lines redone as part of the rebuild rather than re-doing the street than tearing it all up again.

Also, I love the House of Prime Rib.

Cheers,
Pete F.

The secret is coating the rib in flour to build a crust that helps seal in the juices.

RE: Class of 2020 - Papa John - 11-15-2019

I have gout, so this thread drift re: prime rib is killing me.

But back to the topic of admitted recruits who got away, the wounds of Max Borghi's decision to attend WSU still sting me. I'm hoping he doesn't twist the knife on Saturday.

For those in the know, I'm wondering if there are any other decommitments from the current recruiting class--no names, just numbers--about which we should be concerned?

RE: Prime rib - BobK - 11-15-2019

No other decommits and almost all accepted

Bully’s? The sports bar in Mission Valley?  How many brewskis did you have before pronouncing their food “best ever?!”

Phogge you ever go to alfreds ? I see it’s closed again, for remodel. On the 50s to 1976 above the Broadway tunnel iirc.

RE: Prime rib - Phogge - 11-15-2019

Sure, my mom lived next door growing up in North Beach. I used to run with Al Petri Junior at Stow lake. His sister went to Convent of SH and married an SI guy.

Go to Alfred's quite a bit. It's no longer near Broadway Tunnel but in an alley off Kearney south of Chinatown. It closed, then re-opened under new ownership, closed again but scheduled to re-open with the family that sold it in charge. They put out some good beef.
Also...don't ignore Harris' on Pacific and Van Ness. Great steaks and prime rib, too.

Oh...and just in case you're re-thinking turkey on Thanksgiving, lots of folks in my world do a prime rib or standing rib roast. Nobody ever complains.

There's a Lawry's in Chicago too. Top notch. Right there with House of Prime Rib

My Grandmother lived on Broadway in the late 70’s. I’d come in from Cal, and we’d go to lunch in the City. She’d take me to Vanesi’s. ( we’d eat at the Counter), Bardellis, Alfred’s, Mae’s. My favorite memories of her.

Lex it was my great grandmother who took my family in the 50s.

Love prime rib for either thanksgiving or Christmas

Never had anything but the prime rib there so I can't speak to their other offerings.
As you point out, the place is really more of a watering hole than a gourmet restaurant, so it wouldn't surprise me if the others were somewhat pedestrian.
Anyway I used to go to the one in La Jolla (which I believe is now closed). Never thought the one in Mission Valley was as good.

FWIW, it gets good reviews at Tripadvisor.com

I’ll do a prime rib for Christmas sometimes  ( either that or a leg of lamb).  If you have a good oven, the easiest way (it comes out perfect every time) to cook a prime rib is to put a room temperature roast in a 500° oven for 5 minutes per pound. Then turn the oven off and let it sit in the oven for exactly 2 more hours. You cannot open the door. I swear it comes out a perfect medium rare to slightly rare every single time.

Lawry's uses rock salt when they roast the prime rib.
