WSoc: Stanford 15 Prairie View 0 -

...8-0 at halftime.
And that understates the field's tilt.
Complete writeup later, but my goodness. Macario with 2 goals and 4 assists. A whole lot of bench depth playing.
VG
P.S. Forgot to add... Prairie View doesn't have a shot. Not a shot on goal, a shot. Period.

Did Madison Hailey play at all?

She hasn't played at all yet. Which is somewhat worrisome, but given what's happening...
Oh, and 12-0. Macario sets a single-game record with 10 points - 3 goals and 4 assists. Smith also with a hat trick. And Stanford breaks a record from 1988 - most goals in a game.
With 18 minutes left.

15-0 with 7 minutes left in the game. It’s starting to look like a football score

Game ends 15-0.
Macario - 4 goals, 4 assists, 12 points.
Smith - 3 goals, 2 assists.
Bianca Caetano-Ferrara - 3 goals and 1 assists. Her first three of her career. All in the second half.
Sam Tran, 2 goals.
Abby Greubel scored 10 seconds into being on the pitch.
Shots: Stanford 41, Prairie View 0. They never got a shot off.
It is hard to write it up. The mismatch was actively painful. I do think Macario was on the pitch for too long.
The game got so out of hand because Prairie View just couldn't keep any kind of shape, and as Stanford streamed forward, they collapsed into an amorphous line that let the Cardinal go through them, behind them, around them. They just stopped playing as a team in the face of so much pressure. Without any offensive threat, Stanford often had two defenders standing at the midline, the goalie, and 8 players with 30 yards of the goal.
Hofstra vs. Loyola Chicago tomorrow. On the other side of our pod, 4-seed Penn State beat Stony Brook 3-1 at home, and Arizona hosts TCU tomorrow.
Some other scores - Utah got hammered at Duke, 4-0, but WSU beat Memphis at home 1-0, and UCLA beat Lamar 4-1.
Upsets: Central Connecticut State (go Blue Demons!) beat #4 seed Rutgers 1-0, visiting Xavier beat Va Tech, and South Florida beat the Gators in Gainesville, 4-2. CCSU is in Virginia's pod.

Dang, I missed the first 11 goals. But luckily I was able to see the other 4 =)

As an aside, in the most unsuspenseful award category, Catarina Macario won Pac-12 midfielder of the year:
https://pac-12.com/videos/stanfords-catarina-macario-takes-home-pac-12-womens-soccer-midfielder-year-award
Also, Girma won Pac-12 defender of the Defender of the year.
https://pac-12.com/videos/stanfords-naomi-girma-wins-pac-12-womens-soccer-defensive-player-year-award
The highlights are odd, in that they show Girma scoring goals, which is great, but how about showing some, you know, defense.
BC
Here are all 15 goals:

So, who winds up scoring more points. Stanford WSoc, or Stanford football?

By the way, lest you think the disparity of shots was solely a reflection of the opponent. In our 4-nil win over Cal, we outshot the Bears 39 - 1. Yeah, Cal had exactly one more shot than Prairie View A&M.

Being the Stanford women's soccer goalie must be one of the most boring jobs in college athletics. In 20 games, opponents have had 35 shots on goal (less than 2 per game). Katie Meyer has faced 13 shots in 11 games; Rood faced 20 shots in 9 games.

To be honest, BC, that concerns me. Game experience for your goalkeeper becomes more important as the opposition improves exponentially. Again, last year's second goal to FSU just haunts me.
Reading the gostanford writeup, the 15 goals were an NCAA tournament record by a full five goals, and a Stanford team record by 4.
A couple of other thoughts:
(1) I actively wondered why Macario came BACK into the game in the 65th minute ahead 10-0. I THINK that it might be the roster size limit for the tournament - it feels like our "active" roster was 19 or 20, because both Prairie View and Stanford played 17 field players; they also played their second keeper, while Stanford didn't. I can't see any other reason why Macario is on the field that late in a rout. But I couldn't find documentation of NCAA tournament roster limits.
(2) I'm of two minds about how the game went. In one sense, Stanford kept playing positive soccer. In another, they beat up on a supine opponent.
The story goes that, when North Carolina was leagues better than the teams they were playing, Anson Dorrance had two rules. One, that if they were up by 5 or 6 goals, the Tar Heels had to play "two touch" soccer. In other words, no dribbling - only passing and shooting. If they got ahead by nine goals, they weren't allowed to shoot; they were supposed to work the ball to an opponent's endline, turn around, and come back to midfield, then do it again. At least some variant of that.
Personally, I've always thought that would be more insulting as an opponent than continuing to score. But what do people think?
One caveat: having been a keeper through some routs (I once had a game where my team ended up playing 7 on 11 due to injuries, and I think I faced about 50 shots over the course of game), there is one limit to that. When the other team's players start trying "trick" shots - scorpion kicks, lifting the ball up so they can hit a volley, or other egotistical displays. Those sorts of players went into my "little book" of people to be greeted rudely if they came after me on a lofted ball.
(3) It was nice to have a fun game, but either Hofstra or Loyola will be much more serious business. Hofstra, as I mentioned in an earlier thread, is DRAMATICALLY underseeded by RPI - they ended up #16 in the RPI, which means they should have been our opponents in the final 16, not the final 32. Part of that is artifact - they lost to the good teams they played: 6-0 to Penn State, 4-1 to Rutgers, and 2-1 to Brown, and the second-ranked team in the CAA was Delaware at #95.
That said, I am going to try to catch a stream of their game tomorrow morning at 10 am PST.
(4) Really nice to see Caetano-Ferrara going off, given her role in Macario's adaptation to the United States, and subsequent decision to attend Stanford.
Hoping our football team can outscore our futbol team,
VG

My daughter's club team coach used various tactics when they were on the good side of a rout (they got to experience the bad side a few times in tournaments against Sam Tran's De Anza Force team), but most wouldn't translate to our college level: can only shoot with non-dominant foot; high scorer(s) can't shoot at all; some minimum # of passes before a shot; and forwards and back line switch positions.

With Macario's incredible performance last night, she is up to 77 points on the season, 27 goals and 23 assists in 20 games. The NCAA single season record was set by Mia Hamm in 1992, 97 points in 25 games. Given the pace Macario is at, she has a chance to reach that record assuming we make it to the finals. That'd be 5 more games and she'd need to average 4 points a game. It's doable but just above her current pace, which is probably a bit high thanks to last night.

That was incredible--and against a tournament team? Sure it was a mismatch, but that would be like a 90-0 football bowl game, or a 140-10 basketball game in the first round. That was a rout of all routs. Like VG, it worries me. How can any team win like that and not have it dull their edge a little?

One other score - Pepperdine, the only team to defeat Stanford, lost in PKs to Texas Tech which is seeded #2 in their region. According to the write up, Pepperdine held Texas Tech without a single shot for 70 minutes of the game.

Yeah, that surprised me, too. Something to consider: Stanford's next game (on 11/22) will be only its third match in 19 days....so fitness maintenance may have played a part in that as well.

Cat had 5 assists, not 4, to go with her 4 goals. 13 points.
She set Stanford single season goals and points records last night (27 over Press's and O'Hara's 26 and 77 (!!!) over O'Hara's 65.
She padded her single season assist record and her (already set) career assist record.
She has 58 goals - 13 shy of Press's career record of 71.
She has 163 points - 20 shy of Press's career record of 183.
Oh, and is now the NCAA leader in goals and points - and has about 50% more assists than anyone else. Her closest competition on goals and assists plays for Lamar, which lost yesterday.
Oh, and I think she may have come back on because of the only bad news of the night - neither Madison Haley nor Carly Malatsky played (or, I think, were dressed). We were short on forwards. (Or maybe Paul just wanted to let her get the goals record to her own last night.)
Favorite goal (of 15): Kiki's blast. The crowd went wild but so did the players.
