MBB vs William & Mary - SamuelMcF - 11-21-2019

7pm on P12N/radio. Though W&M is ranked significantly lower than you'd think, they did put up a strong fight against Oklahoma. They have a PF who is a stud. Oh, and there's the whole 5-on-10 thing, since we're playing both William AND Mary.

Discuss!

Going to be interesting to see who we start this game.  We do not want ODS to get into foul trouble trying to guard their big man, on the other hand, ODS might be too quick for the big man to guard at the other end.  Maybe it is a game where Kisunas and Keefe pound on him all night
and use up their 10 fouls by game end.  It will be a defensive test for us against a half way decent team.  We need the win to get people to start paying attention to us.
In the last game our guys were bored to death at half time and mentally lost their edge.  Can't do that this game.  Haase has discussed this I am sure.  I have no idea how good their guards are, but they will be tested by TT and DD.
Hope we get a few more fans in the seats.  If there are unsold tickets, they should give them away to anyone who will make some noise.

Thanks for the heads up. DVR has been set. Looking forward to seeing ODS, DD, and the frosh against stiffer competition. I am hopeful.

RE: MBB vs William & Mary - Goose - 11-21-2019

It would appear that we played pretty well in this game. I didn't watch it, but the end result looked good.

RE: MBB vs William & Mary - SamuelMcF - 11-21-2019

Didn't watch it either, but quick reactions from the box score of an 81-50 pummeling:

Tyrell Terry with 21 and 10 rebounds...good lord.

25-9 in points off TOs, and held a team that averaged 75ppg to 50.

We held W&M's stud PF Nathan Knight, who put up 30 points on Oklahoma, to 7 points and 6 TOs before he fouled out.

RE: MBB vs William & Mary - JJJ - 11-21-2019

You heard it here first: the team looked GOOD. Don’t sleep on the Cardinal.

RE: MBB vs William & Mary - SamuelMcF - 11-21-2019

Great stuff to see so far. Of course, our SOS has been very weak...but better to win all those games by double digits than to lose one, right? Can't ask much more of the team than what we've done.

My concern for the season is how thin our rotation is. We rotate 8 guys...Isaac White is #9, Kodye Pugh out for the season with his ACL tear, and Fitzmorris and the walk-ons round out the bench. Pray the injury gods just focused on football this year.

RE: MBB vs William & Mary - Nan3cy - 11-21-2019

Adam Keith’s kid on the roster. Gawd I feel old...

RE: MBB vs William & Mary - Papa John - 11-22-2019

Once again I was unable to watch, but I caught bits and pieces of the Stanford basketball radio network on TuneIn. The Stanford announcers were gushing about the performance, especially the defensive display, by Stanford MBB.

Next up is the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City, MO. Stanford will have back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday next week. First up is a solid Oklahoma team. Depending on that result, we play Butler or Missouri.

This will be a real challenge for the team, but I think we have a decent chance to surprise some folks.

I'm happy they're winning, but consider the competition. Is any of their opponents to date in the RPI Top 100?

True, not the strongest group of teams but the following facts say something about this team and it is all positive:

1.  6 and 0 start for first time in something like 11 years.
2.  Assists up
3.  Turnovers down
4.  Steals up a bunch
5.  Team 2 point FG percent over .500
6.  Team 3 point FG percent over .400
7.  Opposing team FG percentages, both from 2 and 3, are under .400.

These are significant numbers regardless of who you are playing.  Defense is this team's calling card.  They really get after it and are a lot of fun to watch.

If you're going to mention wvb, you need to acknowledge their mom, Kristin Klein Keefe as well.

James Madison, Vermont, UTEP, VCU, Wright State, Kent State, Richmond, George Mason, and Yale are all in the RPI top 25. RPI means absolutely nothing right now.

...which is a shame, because we're RPI #30 :)

Tyrell Terry of @StanfordMBB is the second Division I player in the past 20 years to have at least 10 points, 2 assists and 2 steals in each of his first 6 career games. The other was Oklahoma's Trae Young in 2017-18 (7 straight). #GoStanford

Terry was fantastic last night.  Can't say enough good things about his season so far.  And if the team really is better this year (that remains to be seen until we play better opponents), he gets a bunch of the credit.

Does embedding a tweet not work anymore?

Don't feel bad, I played against his grandfather.

Also pretty rare for your point guard to have a double double in points and rebounds.

RE: MBB vs William & Mary - Renaissance Man - 11-22-2019

I have watched every minute of every game so far.  I am optimistic at this point. Some of the differences that create that optimism are:

-Everyone in our first seven can score and defend.
-Five of our first seven are legitimate threats inside and outside (Wills and Keefe are not really threats from 3)
-Each of our first seven seems to be able to create shots when the shots don't come from the offense.
-The new commitment to getting back on D, rather than attacking the offensive glass is forcing opponents to work for every point.
-We have a number of players who can handle the ball, and they have not been bothered by pressure so far (I thought Santa Clara played very good defense and we reacted well).
-Our quickness seems to make up for the lack of size, and fits the way the game is played in 2019.
-Our defense has pretty much shut down the best scorers on each of our opponents so far.
-While the competition has not been basketball royalty so far,  William and Mary's only loss coming into the game was at Oklahoma, in a game that they led throughout, I think Santa Clara is going to have a good year, Long Beach State took UCLA to the wire at Pauley, and I think that they, and Fullerton, will be at the top of their league.

RE: MBB vs William & Mary - 76lsjumb - 11-22-2019

Certainly looking good so far.  Still, we've only faced what, as a long-time observer, I would call the "Dr. Tom" portion of the schedule [minus Bemidji State, of course].

From initial looks, though, there's reason to hope the current Terry can carry on the tradition of high quality Stanford basketball exhibited by previous "Terry's"...

Let's see . . . Claude Terry, Terry Taylor . . . um, was Brevin Knight's middle name Terry?
