Stanford - Butler - BostonCard - 11-26-2019

Since we're a basketball school now, we need a live thread.

Stanford was down early 12-4, but two threes by Terry and Jones have made it a 14-10 game at the 11:35 mark.

Terry Trey at the buzzer to tie it 29-29 halftime!!!

RE: Stanford - Butler - indiancardinal - 11-26-2019

Tied at 62 with under 2 min to go

RE: Stanford - Butler - Langdude - 11-26-2019

Great game. Stanford played well; Butler a bit better down the stretch. Stanford will use this. Fun to watch this team. Good defense and more athletic on offense than recent Stanford teams. Onward!

What an exciting last two minutes.  Too bad we came out on the short end of that finish, but there were so many exciting plays down the stretch and difficult shots made.  Stanford MBB is now officially on my watch list again.

RE: Stanford - Butler - indiancardinal - 11-26-2019

Great game indeed. Tough loss. But haven't had this much fun watching a Stanford basketball team in a while.

Is Terry going to be the catalyst for the next golden era of Stanford basketball ala Brevin?

Exciting times for a young team.

RE: Stanford - Butler - burger - 11-26-2019

Surely Terry got tripped on that last play--both he and the Butler guy went down without much body contact.

Anyway, great game despite the outcome.  This team might be for real.

RE: Stanford - Butler - PVTree - 11-26-2019

Fun game to watch. We were unable to stop their guy who scored some 13 out of their last 17 points. He made incredible shots. Wish Terry had not been so out of control on his last drive. Further back, wish Stanford would have held the ball until the last shot and not have given them ample time to get a shot.

RE: Stanford - Butler - Farm93 - 11-26-2019

It is all good.
In the way too early bracketology Oklahoma and Butler were both listed as 8/9 type seeds.
Both schools were in the "others receiving votes" categories implying they were in the 26-30 range.
Yes, it is early for those schools, but Oklahoma did beat Missouri handily this afternoon.

That implies Stanford might be in the bubble zone or perhaps even better.

Amazing how a PG can change the fortunes of a B-Ball coach.

The pull-up jump shot is a lost art, and I blame the what seems to me self-fulfilling prophecy of numbers obsession.

Yes, it is true that a shot at the rim has a higher likelihood of going in than one taken further away, and you get a higher chance of getting a trip to the line when you drive to the bucket, but it doesn't take a whole lot of common sense to realize the following...

One, refs are less likely to call fouls in tight games in the final seconds. Two, if the defense believes you are going to drive, and you pull up to shoot, you will have an uncontested shot. Yes, it's hard to run full speed while dribbling, stop your dribble, jump up and make an accurate shot, with your momentum carrying you forward in the air, but that's why you practice.

It’s the three point line. The pull up is not practiced much by most players. Threes and getting to the rim. The three point line has killed the 15 foot jumper.  And the pull up.

For the first time in a LONG time I'm excited about Stanford MBB. I didn't expect to see anything like this

RE: Stanford - Butler - BostonCard - 11-27-2019

Also, Duke lost to Stephen F. Austin so that also made me happy.

Apropos the Stephen F Austin win against Duke, comes this story:

Quote:Stephen F. Austin’s exhilarating 85-83 upset wasn’t just notable for the sheer joy that swept the country after Duke’s loss. It was also proof that hating Duke can be a force for good in the world.

As if anyone doubted that hating Duke could be a force for good.

Kind of reminds me of this iconic ending against Duke

After a long hiatus we might be headed towards something like this again. The staff is never stops recruiting as is proven by Terry and Jones, they have a real eye for guys who can play.  Terry was a 4 star now playing like a 5 and Jones seemed like a project to many, a guy who could shoot, but missing the other parts of the game.  Now he turns out to maybe be the best shooter we have had in a long time, and a guy who can play tough defenses.  They are fun to watch and I now wish I still lived in the Bay Area and still held season tickets.

Certainly the greatest ending of any sporting event I’ve seen in person. Scoring on fourteen straight possessions to take the lead and win the game.

Took my kids to Duke basketball camp once. Coach K seemed like a very nice, unpretentious person.
Always had a problem hating them after that.

I do remember that one.  An incredible era in Stanford basketball.

I was at that game and remember looking right down the line of that shot from my seats in the upper deck and yelling "That might go" when he released it
