WVB Seeding at 5:30 ESPNU - BobK - 12-01-2019

Stanford should be a top 4 seed. Probably 3 overall. Stanford hosts the first two rounds this coming Friday and Saturday

Stanford, along with Baylor, Texas and Wisconsin, confirmed as the top 4 seeds. Exact seeding and matchups at 5:30pm PT.

Pitt gets the #6 seed, and the assignment in Stanford's side of the bracket. Penn State at #11 seed, and BYU at #14 seed, so possible rematches
on our side of bracket presuming chalk holds serve.

Penn State is #11 seed and would face Pitt in the round of 16 if both advance.

BYU has to be sick of seeing Stanford in NCAA tournaments, having been eliminated by the Cardinal in three different sports in the past year.

Stanford gets Denver to open NCAA play; Georgia and Cal Poly also in Stanford's quadrant.
Interesting note with Pitt/Penn State on Stanford's side of the bracket: the Final Four is in Pittsburgh this year.

Congrats to the team for a strong finish to get this seed.  And, of course our Thanksgiving blessing was thank you for Plummer coming back.

Canalejas--

The Selection Committee just had to make up for the Big 10 not earning a top-3 seed by giving them literally every other benefit of the doubt decision.


Wisconsin AND Nebraska seeded ahead of Pitt (and making sure Pitt doesn't get a crack at either outside of making the final by putting them in Stanford's bracket)?  Check.

Penn State given the #11 seed and their typical cupcake of a subregional?  #35 Towson, #54 American, and #76 Princeton say hello.  (For comparison, Stanford, as the #3 seed, drew #31 Georgia, #37 Cal Poly, and #75 Denver.  Every one more highly ranked than their Happy Valley counterpart.)

Seeding #21 Purdue at the expense of say #13 Marquette. #14 Rice, or #18 Utah?   Check again.

Oh, and putting in 16-13 Illinois over 20-10 Cal?  Check.

There are 7 Big 10 teams in the tournament - FIVE are hosting as top-16 seeds.  Talk about an advantage.

The committee chair may have made a bit of a Freudian slip - when discussing Illinois, she literally said they got in "because of their body of work in the Big 10."  They lost to every top-10 team they played - well, okay, Marquette was ranked #7 when they played in Illinois.)  They lost to Colorado at a neutral site.  But they still made it in over Cal.

Sheesh.

Cal should have won against Washington on Wednesday.   They almost won in 3, and that would have been a big statement win.
Oh well, might be better for the program to use that selection decision as motivation for 2020.

I seem to remember that the Pac-12 had very good pre-conference results against ranked teams, and the chair said the Pac-12 was the top RPI conference in the country. Doesn't seem like the seedings or the teams included reflect that. If you just looked at the bracket you'd have to say the Big 10 was the top conference. Not clear to me why parity in the Pac-12 results in teams dropping in seeding, while it seems to have the opposite effect in the Big 10.

Despite having the top conference RPI, the Pac-12 only got two seeded teams. So chances are that we won’t be sending many teams to the round of 16 and beyond. Which will in turn appear to justify the committee’s bias in favor of the Big Ten. It’s a shitty situation.
