Good article on Pac-12 and NCAA FB attendance - qwerty49 - 12-05-2019

I like John Canzano.  His pieces have substance to them.  Nice discussion about the trade-off between TV revenue and fan-friendly kickoffs. The most interesting implication is that on season-ticket sales, which I haven't seen discussed elsewhere. He also talks about the (unsurprisingly) low advance sales for the PAC12 championship game at Levi's tomorrow. I appreciate that an out-of-towner sees the difficulty in scheduling a kickoff during Friday rush hour in the Bay Area.

Not to mention, I see it is suppose to be truly awful weather conditions all during the game.  Rain, cold, and winds at 20-30 MPH. But hey, both teams will have to play in it.  And it's nothing compared to what teams play in in the northern latitudes.

Sadly, when the conference signed this albatross of an agreement they were cashing out on the TV side with little consideration for the fans. You reap what you sow. This was a foreseeable outcome but Scott & the University Presidents saw dollar signs and didn't give a damn. Now we are stuck with the short end of a contract that was about 4 years too long. A lot can change in 12 years.

Yet another reason to #FireLarryScott

With a move to Vegas next year, will game time change to Saturday?

RE: Good article on Pac-12 and NCAA FB attendance - baymeadows3408 - 12-07-2019

I think it's interesting that declines in attendance are being seen across the country, not just in Pac-12 country. But the numbers in the article also show that Pac-12 teams have lower attendance than teams in the other four power conferences. The reality is that it's hard getting Americans who live in the mountain/Pacific region to develop an interest in college football. The product just doesn't resonate on that side of the country as it does in other parts of the country. I like college football, but sometimes I see things from SEC country that make me think, "Wow, SEC people take this stuff way too seriously. This is just a game played by guys who basically are still kids." If I still lived in the Bay Area, there is no way I would attend a Pac-12 championship game at Levi's if Stanford wasn't playing in it. Maybe if somebody gave me the tickets, but even there might be an opportunity cost of something else I would have rather done than spending five or so hours getting to the stadium, watching the game, and returning home.

Unless the Pac-12 starts beating the BigTen and SEC in TV ratings power, the Pac-12 will continue to get Fridays as long as more popular CGs get the better slots.

FWIW - The use of Levi's happened after the TV contract was signed.   I have always believed that the Pac-12 was a bit embarrassed by the Stanford Pac-12 CG.  They likely understood an empty neutral venue stadium had some excuses, an empty on campus stadium just reinforced negative perceptions the conference could literally not afford.   So a bit ironic for Stanford fans to complain about the move to a neutral venue.    If the first several Pac-12 CGs were held at some combination of Oregon, USC, UW and ASU then maybe the game would still be at home venues.   I guess for current Coach Shaw haters he can get the blame here too.

Las Vegas addresses many problems.
The stadium is a dome, so that will eliminate the game related weather concerns for visitors.
Early December is actually a good time to visit Las Vegas, as it is not impossibly hot.
There are loads of hotels on the strip, and the stadium is there too.
And as a bonus city and stadium are neutral territory even though it is in the Pac-12 footprint.

The Pac-12 teams' fans still have to fly into the game (especially the Pac-12 North) and that's a significant cost.  There is also limited time to navigate the logistics challenges, but I think Las Vegas is easier for last minute logistics than Santa Clara.

If the SEC had their CG game in Las Vegas on Friday night I am highly confident they would pack that place.  I doubt the Pac-12 will get that level of hype, passion and interest, but I do suspect the Pac-12 CG may get 50% of capacity.

For the Pac-12 Las Vegas is a good option, but it won't change the reality that the number and passion of season ticket holders and people living in the Pac-12 footprint will not allow it to match-up favorably with the SEC or BigTen.

interestingly enough, the driving distance from Baton Rouge to Atlanta is about the same as San Jose to Las Vegas so both are "within driving distance" for a Saturday game without taking a vacation day.

Nah.  They'll just observe that, going forward, the site of CCG will never be a concern for Stanford with Coach Shaw at the helm.

BTW, agree that Vegas addresses a lot of issues.  In fact, am trying to figure out way to get there for hoops CCG stuff.

Agree on all counts. And totally forgot about hoops being there. That might actually be fun this year!

Yeah, you have to go way, way, way back to 2017 for the conference championship game to be a concern for Shaw.

We may well not be back in the conference championship hunt for a long time.  Before Shaw, the last time we had won the PAC-12 was in 1999, before there was a conference championship. But you seem mighty sure that Shaw can’t or won’t get us back there, which seems rather presumptuous.  Again, he did it as recently as two years ago.

Do you watch the games?
Do you know what is (not) going on in recruiting?
Do you know how many eligible upper classmen - including ones who started or got meaningful PT and are NOT pro prospects - are bailing on Shaw and his program?

I know you do. I just don't understand how bright people can see everything that is going on and not be incredibly alarmed.

This guy inherited a Ferrari and has driven it into a Yugo.  Nice going, coach!

RE: Good article on Pac-12 and NCAA FB attendance - BostonCard - 12-07-2019

Yes, I go to the games. We sucked this year.

Recruiting is better than the average pac-12 class (currently third in the conference, 21st nationally), but there are immense holes on the defensive side of the ball, which I’ve been noting for six months now (feel free to go back and read my posts). We’ll be at or near the 85 scholarship limit, depending on who else leaves.

I don’t expect that we will win the conference next year, or the year after.  Shaw might never coach the team back to the conference championship... I fully acknowledge that.  But fortunes can turn very quickly in this league, and you seem awfully certain that Shaw can’t or won’t ever make the conference championship again, even though he has made it more than any other coach in the PAC-12. And we may we’ll have ourselves a very nice team by the time this years freshmen are seniors.

Y'know, just because some folks don't share your tendency to flap your wings all over the place doesn't mean they aren't bright...or even concerned.

Whatever . . . (I assume everyone here is bright)
But you go on believing "All is well."  Hey, maybe you can hang out in the stadium with Kevin Bacon  . . . you pretty much can have your pick on seating.
