Wow the hits just keep on comin. Shaw better do something, and quickly.

RE: Swann in the portal - qwerty49 - 12-05-2019

Ouch.  Just ouch.

In both his case and Williams', we know it's not playing time. Unless the 2-down-linemen set is somehow creating issues there.

Are they dissatisfied with their development? Is it linked to Turley's departure somehow?

We may never know, since college sports pretty much prohibit transparency via access to the players.

And what can Shaw do, anyway? Barn door is unlocked, horses appear to be going down the road....

Is there a coach portal?

RE: Swann in the portal - Austroturf - 12-05-2019

This is a disaster.  Simply a disaster.  Remember when Brennan Scarlett did a grad transfer from Cal to shore up our 2015 D-line?  Now the exodus is in the other direction.  Not a good sign, folks.  Since he's listed as a senior, I am assuming he is a grad transfer.

Coach Reynolds please call your office immediately.

RE: Swann in the portal - SamuelMcF - 12-05-2019

Rumblings that there will be plenty more. Last year's exodus was the start of a trend, not a blip.

Edit to clarify: we do need attrition to accommodate the freshman class considering there were only a few players out of eligibility. Generally expected that to consist of less-contributing players like Peek, Treyjohn Butler, Donald Stewart, etc. This second year of full-blown starters moving on (after Buncom, Jackson, Barton, and Edwards all did last year) is extremely troubling. And so far ALL on defense too...

RE: Swann in the portal - OutsiderFan - 12-05-2019

Stanford football is broken. I've been planning to write a post that documents all the problems I observe, but wanted to see how the recruiting class materializes before actually writing it.  The news about Williams and Swann may hasten its publishing. It seems most of the issues have been discussed at some point or another, but never have they all been brought together in one post. Having it all in one place will be helpful if not sobering.

To be clear, it won't be a "Shaw sucks" post.  It will just lay out the realities based on facts, without casting blame.

Well, Swann and Williams clued us in by participating in Senior Day. There were only two other contributors who could stick around participating in Sr Day, Pryts and Costello. Who else would be a candidate for a grad transfer?

I agree with the posters that say these players are graduating and don't owe Stanford anything. That is true but it is still sad as a Stanford fan that these players feel they need to go elsewhere to have their best opportunity.  It really bummed me out when Reid Travis did it and Cormac Ryan, and it is bumming me out more with Williams and Swann because I was resigned to the sad state of the baskeball program. To think football may now be in that state is depressing.

Devery Hamilton and Jordan Fox (contributors, both unfortunately injured)
Scooter Harrington and Obi Eboh (marginal contributors)

All introduced at senior day, from what I know.

RE: Swann in the portal - Phogge - 12-05-2019

Ebo is marginal. Hamilton has been hurt. Jordan Fox is a player. Harrington gets a ton of snaps. TE is no longer a position of strength. Losing Fox will hurt but what little I saw of Umerah was positive. Plus they have The Phantom, Andres Fox.

If there is dissension it will come out. It always does. If there is a position coach problem with his players he needs to go.

Where is Muir in all this? Who is the real power in the department?

Incorrect. Of those 4, only Harrington was introduced. Fox and Hamiltion and Hattis joined the group picture at midfield, but they were not introduced.  If they were grad transferring, I think they would have been introduced. As my post stated above, there were 4 starters with eligibility who were introduced, Williams, Swann, Pryts and Costello.

Here is the list from the Stanford press release

Senior recognition: Prior to the game, the following players were introduced: inside linebacker Ryan Beecher; wide receiver Isaiah Brandt-Sims; quarterback K.J. Costello; tight end Scooter Harrington; running back Dorian Maddox; long snapper Richard McNitzky; inside linebacker Andrew Pryts; punter/kicker Colin Riccitelli; quarterback Jack Richardson; running back Cameron Scarlett; defensive end Thomas Schaffer; wide receiver Harry Schwartz; wide receiver Donald Stewart; defensive end Jovan Swann; Toohill; outside linebacker Anthony Trinh; and defensive tackle Michael Williams.

RE: Swann in the portal - Goose - 12-05-2019

I am going to be a bit of an optimist here and withhold panic until the players in the portal actually exit the portal to some other school. There are many reasons to go into the portal. One of them is that it lets you see what options may be available elsewhere. You may find that there are none that are attractive and pull your name from the portal. It may also be that you aren't sure you can get into the Stanford program you want for next year and actually may need to go somewhere else. Figuring out where that may be is just prudent. I wold argue that if you aren't already accepted into the program you want at Stanford, it would be stupid not to look at all your options.

Ha! Love it! (Your question, not the burning down of the program.)

lex24 - lex24 - 12-05-2019

One simple question I have – if they have the units to graduate, which they must to go into the portal, and want to move towards a masters do they have to get in to one of the Stanford graduate schools?

Could this exitus to the portal be in part because some  haven’t gotten in but they may be able to elsewhere? I don’t know just asking.

Everybody assumes it’s for some dissatisfaction with the program etc. But I suspect there are other possibilities. Hell maybe some of them don’t like Stanford. So yeah it’s a problem.

The  way I get over the problem is to make damn sure I stop redshirting freshman. Play them.  Having them raring to go for a 5th year somewhere else doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. And frankly while  Stanford occasionally gets the benefit – Scarlet being the best example- it’s not gonna happen very often because most are not gonna be able to get in.

This is good insight, and to some extent has been seen this season (though many burnt shirts were burnt out of necessity).  If they aren't already, I think Shaw and company need to start performing exit interviews with transferring seniors.  Find out what it is that they are looking for in the transfer portal and what we are not providing.  And if it is a fixable issue, then it needs to be fixed, but if it is a structural issue like "after four years at Stanford, I want a break from the academics and just want to go somewhere where I can play football and take easy classes" then there is not much we can do, and we should stop trying to preserve redshirts.

The graduate transfer rule and transfer portal has lowered the barrier to transfer.

As far as grad transfers to Stanford the track team has 2 and baseball has 1. So it’s possible for football

And WVB has one. Different from most since she graduated from UCLA in 3 years, but still taking advantage of not having to sit out a year.
