3rd defensive starter to enter the portal. What is going on?

RE: RS Junior CB Obi Eboh in the Portal - Spiny_Norman - 12-06-2019

Eboh was a starter at the beginning of the season who was replaced by Kyu Blu Kelly after several games. Eboh returned to action at the end of the season because of injuries. But he appeared to have been passed by both Kelly and Jonathan McGill on the depth chart when everyone was healthy.

RE: RS Junior CB Obi Eboh in the Portal - Phogge - 12-06-2019

Stanford OK at corner. Something IS going on however.

RE: RS Junior CB Obi Eboh in the Portal - BobK - 12-06-2019

Stanford uses 5 DBs mostky so this is a bigger loss than posted above

RE: RS Junior CB Obi Eboh in the Portal - Phogge - 12-06-2019

Eboh can’t cover Bobbbbbbbbb. Would rather have the young guys play and learn. They aren’t going to win a championship next year anyway.

RE: RS Junior CB Obi Eboh in the Portal - SamuelMcF - 12-06-2019

Frosh Zahran Manley was getting Eboh's time at CB3 by the end of the season. This was one of the more expected (and necessary for the incoming class) pieces of attrition. Agree with Phogge.

In a vacuum this transfer makes sense, but what looks to be a more-serious-than-expected overall exodus really does point to something rotten in the state of Denmark.

Wait, is this the Stanford football thread or the SF Giants thread?  :-)

Apologies if this has been asked and answered previously, but is overall transfer portal activity up at other schools? Conference -wide? Nation-wide?

Is there any hope that this is just a "process" tool that players have discovered they can use?  Or....are we Denmark?

Yes overall transfer portal activity is up across the board, but so far our spike in activity is on par with schools whose coaches left/got fired. Denmark-esque.

Sure you can enter the portal and not transfer, and it doesn't hurt to explore your options especially if you've graduated/are on track to do so...but the vast majority of those in the portal do transfer. When you have multiple-year defensive starters wanting out (Swann and Williams, not Eboh), something is wrong.

Change the school at the top to see others; there's a tab for national as well.

3 corners coming in, two 4 star.

No safties so maybe a Delano Howell-type switch in the spring?

Portal has only been around since 2018.  Overall transfer activity is in fact up.

I thought you felt all our players were softies.

Been a while since we've had a major position switch (excluding OLB to ILB and back again or DE to OLB).  Maybe another reason to take more quarterbacks?  We've had good luck converting them to safety.

Back in the days when it was common for a player to be a QB/Safety in high school, it worked. Today, with the early specialization of high school athletes, it is much less common for a QB to be a 2 way starter. I think the theory today is that you convert high school corners who are big enough to safety in college. That should provide safeties who can cover. Unfortunately for us, it has more resulted in safeties who can't tackle.

RE: RS Junior CB Obi Eboh in the Portal - StanfordMatt - 12-06-2019

It's true that the transfer portal has made transfers more common, but it's not as if we're likely to be reaping any benefits from the increase. As it concerns Stanford, the transfer market is generally a one-way street.

RE: RS Junior CB Obi Eboh in the Portal - BobK - 12-06-2019

Except for the 4 mentioned elsewhere All non Football but grad transfers

lex24 - lex24 - 12-06-2019

Yep.  Play the freshmen. Stop redshirting anyone that can contribute. Because the 5th year is going to be problematic.

Anyone ever consider the possibility that after four years at Stanford they just want to go to a  school that’s not as tough academically have some fun and not have as tough a time? Everybody assumes it has to do with the football program. But I’ve yet to see anyone set forth any evidence that’s the case. As I’ve said before – if the evidence is there by all means let’s see it.

IF that's what you want, you can leave yourself a few credits shy of graduation, take the minimum number of units for the quarter, and then you have a nice chill fall quarter you can focus on football, and then meet the requirements of graduation.

Lots of references to rottenness in Denmark.

Is Shaw standing in front of his mirror quoting the melancholy Dane?

"The time is out of joint.  O cursed spite
That ever I was born to set it right."
