The quote on quote semifinals of the NCAA tournament, even though the winner of the Stanford/SC match should be the prohibitive favorite in the final.

We lead 10-6 in the third quarter.

RE: Next starts now for water polo - BobK - 12-07-2019

11-8 after three

RE: Next starts now for water polo - 81alum - 12-07-2019

12-10 with 3:37 left.  USC scored twice rapidly to pull close.

13-12 Stanford with 19 seconds left, USC with the ball and a powerplay about to start.

They tie it up and on to overtime.  Another exclusion against us on the last powerplay.  Ugh.

Stanford tried scoring a quick goal late instead of milking the clock, that really came back to bite them...

A double exclusion?!? With the shot clock off?!?

We are now down 13-14 after the first 3 minute overtime.  3 more minutes to turn this around.  We had a penalty shot for the lead, it was not close enough to the post and the SC goalie blocked it, they scored on a quick counterattack.  SC has lost several players to penalties but it sure feels like they have the momentum.

We tie it 14-14 with 19 seconds left, SC does not get a shot off, and it is now on to a golden goal overtime.  I thought men's soccer was the cardiac team.

Golden goal for the win!  Seconds in to the third overtime.  But officials are talking something over.

Yes!

For the first time since 2004, USC will not be in the water polo final. And Stanford has a chance to win its first water polo NC since 2002.

It was a fantastic match. Really should have been a final.

Two NC championships on the line at 5PM Sunday!
I doubt that has EVER happened before!

By the way, interview with Abramson after MPSF championship:

Actually Stanford has won two NCAA team titles on the same day before....
November 1996...MXC & WXC

FWIW - I suspect winning two on the same day has happened a few times.

MXC & WXC are often dominated by the same small group of schools, and are held back to back on the same course.
MITF & WITF are also held at the same venue on the same days, and again a few schools dominate both sports.
MOTF & WOTF are held at the same venue on the same days.

For a few years back a decade or so...WTen and MTen were also held at the same venue on the same days.

So without looking I suspect a few schools have pulled off a two in one day, but usually in the same venue.

Woot!!  All right now!  Wonderful beating SC.

RE: Next starts now for water polo - cardcrimson - 12-07-2019

RE: Next starts now for water polo - Farm93 - 12-07-2019

BTW - I still want someone in the NCAA to explain how exactly the #1 seed got USC in the semifinal while the #2 seed got Pepperdine.

The way the brackets were set up implies USC was the #3 seed.  The way SC and Pepperdine played confirmed that rough seeding.  If the plan was to just make sure the host school was in the final and/or didn't need to beat two MPSF teams to win the title, then the NCAA should have stated that from the beginning.

As it stands the NCAA had a semi that would have been a great showcase of a final.   A missed opportunity for the sport and for the NCAA.

I think the NCAA should audit just how exactly the Water Polo committee developed this bracket.

I'll complain Monday if the Cardinal doesn't have enough left in the tank tomorrow.

Stanford vs. host UoP tomorrow at 3 pm for the NC. Stanford has defeated Pacific twice already this season including a match in Stockton.
