Stanford football scholarships - Mick - 12-11-2019

Does anyone know how many football scholarships Stanford has used each year since Harbaugh's first year?

RE: Stanford football scholarships - Phogge - 12-11-2019

Lately, not enough.

I think anyone can look at the 247 list

I'm not that close to the depth charts, but who are some of these guys? Lots I've never heard mentioned before. . . .

101 total scholarships and offers, 24 seniors listed; the prior year tabs don't seem to work for me.

This is a bad list. Has 4 guys who haven't been on the team for years (Peus, Segina, Yarbrough, Gutwald) and Anthony Trinh, a walk-on...and that's just the seniors.

Where can one find a good list? Isn't Trinh in the portal?

There's a pinned thread on this board that keeps track of the current situation.  It doesn't fully answer the question, though, of number of scholarships used over time.

Basically from Harbaugh until 2018 it was at or close to 85 (occasionally a medical retirement or unexpected departure reduced that number).  It dipped in 2018 and didn't recover in 2019 as we had a large number of early departures (you can debate whether that should have been as unexpected as it was).  We should be back to 80+ this year, again, somewhat predicated on whether there are one or more unexpected departures.

Trinh isn't on scholarship, so he shouldn't be on a list of scholarship players and who gives a crap if he's in the portal.

If a kid isn't on scholarship, can't he transfer whenever he'd like? Is Trinh just trying to be noticed?

iirc, the "self-sanctions" on scholarships started in earnest with the 2017 roster (and we'd been a handful short previous years).  bowlorbust from TOS coined the phrase.  and given the use frequency of the portal door, I suspect we will still be short of 85 "recruited" scholarship players on roster this fall.

I would assume he can, but the portal gives the players a chance to advertise their interest in playing football somewhere else in a more efficient manner than sending emails to other coaching staffs

FYI, in the chart, you can figure out how many scholies were given out per year, at least the last four, by looking at the number of scholarship players per year. Though, in the chart, you have to adjust for burnt shirts because they’re listed by eligibility year and not class year.

I don't believe that is true, though I am not sure and I cannot find clear information on the matter.

Going by memory, Stanford has a long history of being well under the scholarship limitations. There was discussion of the matter under Willingham. While I don't remember explicitly, I think that Harbaugh got us to the limit (he was certainly aggressive generally about recruiting, and cutting guys late).

As Shaw took over he seemed to be reacting to perceived excesses under Harbaugh in recruiting, and I think most years was well under the cap. I remember extensive discussions about the class entering in 2013. It was poorly ranked, though at least to a large extent because it was so small (ranked #52 by 247 composite, 12 commits the way they count). The average recruit rating was good enough to be ranked in the low 20s range, but the tiny size was a real problem. My memory tells me that there was plenty of room for more signees - but to be sure that is only my memory.
