USC clocked by Iowa in San Diego - chrisk - 12-27-2019

FS1 has USC guys as post-game analysts and they are ripping USC coaches to threads.

RE: USC clocked by Iowa in San Diego - JohnR34231 - 12-27-2019

Yep, prepare for another round of Helton bashing and calling for a new head coach coming out of LaLa land.

RE: USC clocked by Iowa in San Diego - BostonCard - 12-27-2019

Goes on to show we simply were not a good team this year.

RE: USC clocked by Iowa in San Diego - OutsiderFan - 12-27-2019

It is shameful to give up 40+ points to Iowa. The most they scored against a power 5 opponent not Rutgers was 27 before tonight.

Slovis was hurt and knocked out of game, and Fink did throw a pick 6, but still, USC shouldn’t be giving up 42 points to Iowa, let alone 49, which is the most they scored in any game this season including Middle Tennessee State.

It appears the Air Raid offense has made USC a bit soft.

RE: USC clocked by Iowa in San Diego - newguy - 12-27-2019

i think i speak for all of us when i lament how sad it is to see such a performance from the Trojans.
but with a brilliant head coach and a strong recruiting class, Trojan fans can at least look forward to a bright future!!!

RE: USC clocked by Iowa in San Diego - OutsiderFan - 12-27-2019

And Air Force holds the Coogs to 34 fewer points than Stanford did, in a 31-21 victory, capping a pitiful PAC-12 Bowl performance evening.

Unless my math is wrong, 49 - 21 is 28, not 34, not that my bit of pedantry changes the underlying message that we did not have a good defense this year.

RE: USC clocked by Iowa in San Diego - Mick - 12-28-2019

The Pac-12 is currently 1-2 in bowl games with four bowl games remaining:

Washington (8-5) defeated #19 Boise State (12-2) 38-7 in the Las Vegas Bowl (bit of a comedown from last year's Rose Bowl appearance for UW).

Air Force (11-2) defeated Washington State (6-7) 31-21 in the Cheez-It Bowl.

And as noted, Iowa defeated USC 49-24 in the Holiday Bowl.

Cal (7-5) plays Illinois (6-6) on Monday in the RedBox Bowl at Levi Stadium.

Florida State (6-6) plays Arizona State (7-5) on Tuesday in the Sun Bowl in El Paso.

#11 Utah (11-2) plays Texas (7-5) in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.

And on Wednesday, January 1, #6 Oregon (11-2) plays #8 Wisconsin (10-3) in the Rose Bowl.

The sobering stat in the Wazzu-Air Force game is that Air Force amassed 371 rushing yards vs. the Cougars and had a TOP of over 43 minutes, which means Leach's offense only saw the field for a bit over 16 minutes.  We barely even tried to run against the Cougars and rushed for a total of 6 yards on 10 carries.  We also lost the TOP battle 34 to 26.  Davis Mills' school record 504 passing yards only netted 22 points.  What does Air Force have that Stanford is missing?  The Falcons did to Wazzu what we once were famed for.

Hmm, thought the score was 55-24 from memory, but yes it hardly matters because the point remains the same no matter my misremembered score.

Air Force had a the services of all five OL being experienced Seniors, and from what I could tell, both a faster and a more powerful RB than Stanford had available. It’s also possible Air Force had a better conceived and executed game plan than Stanford had on offense, some of which can be traced to having an experienced OL.

Air Force only really stopped the Coogs on 4th down plays inside the 10, as we know the Air Raid weakness and on the last desperate drive. Otherwise, their defense was the offense that possessed the ball for almost 3/4 of the game.

Yeah, one nice thing about recruiting at Air Force, is while you may not get four and five star players, the recruits you do get are highly likely to be around for four years. Also, while you can't technically redshirt a player, you can accomplish the same thing by sending him to the prep school for a year.

RE: USC clocked by Iowa in San Diego - Farm93 - 12-28-2019

Unless it is the Rose Bowl, or presumably the CFP, USC just does not put a lot of effort into competing in bowl games.   Excluding the Pasadena one, as bowl games progress it always looks like more and more of the players decide that playing as a team to win the game is just not that important.

USC attrition might be significant over the next several days given the rather difficult 2020 schedule.

lex24 - lex24 - 12-28-2019

One of my core beliefs relating to the air-raid is that it makes a defense soft.  As they largely practice against it. WSU it its best years  had a complimentary defense that played fast.  USC to me when it is strong has been about power. Bruising physical football.  It’s moving away from that is fine by me.

And how bout those Hawkeyes!

AF runs.  Period. If you can grind against an up-tempo offense you keep them off the field. They lose rhythm. Stan-Oregon 2013 is in my top 5 all time Stanford games.

Good points all the way around (+1).  Just one correction: BYU are the Coogs.  Wazzu are the Cougs.  Subtle distinction, I know.

Side note. Hayden Fry’s Death was announced yesterday. Took over an Iowa program that had 17 straight non-winning seasons and took them to three Rose Bowls and respectability.

RE: USC clocked by Iowa in San Diego - BostonCard - 12-28-2019

Notre Dame clobbered Iowa State in the camping world bow. Just once it was nice to see Notre Dame not get slotted into a good bowl just because they are Notre Dame.

Stand up tight end and a pink visitors locker room. Iowa was horrific before Fry. I think Denny Green went 4-7 their one year: and was named Big-10 COY.  Fry and Forest Evashevski.  Iowa legends.

Kedon Slovis' injury might be the biggest news coming out of the game last night.  hopefully it is not a severe one (although it looked bad on tv)
