If you are a baseball fan... - OutsiderFan - 01-06-2020

You now have no choice but to become a subscriber to The Athletic. Keith Law, arguably the leading expert on all things baseball prospects and player assessment, has left ESPN to lead The Athletic's Minor League coverage and dip into the brewing labor turmoil. You get Keith Law, but also all the other usually outstanding writing across the sports landscape, all for $4/mo.

Also last I checked, the Athletic had no dedicated Stanford coverage for football or basketball, even though they cover like 40 college teams. I’m fully in support of the idea, but I don’t care enough about Bay Area pro sports and their Stanford coverage is minimal.

Right, I remember him.  Yeah, I want no part of that.

My code of ethics precludes me from spending fifty bucks a year to read about minor league baseball, so I'll have to rely on others to let me know what he has to say...

I talk with my old teammates who are still hanging on the fringes of MLB scouting departments including the Giants. That’s why I am so high on Correy.

Bobbbb, you ought to hear what some of them say about your erstwhile “No. 9”.

notwithstanding Keith Law, The Athletic has some great pieces in it.  it is worth the money (I think I'm in at $2 a month).

RE: If you are a baseball fan... - OutsiderFan - 01-06-2020

I was totally blown away by the number of people commenting in the comments of the article I linked who said they are now cancelling their ESPN+ subs because Keith Law has been hired by The Athletic. Everyone is free to make their own choices, I'm just recommending something I believe to be educational and insightful if you enjoy sports journalism and analysis of the games being played and who is playing them.

The Athletic charges less than $4/mo.  It covers every pro sport in every major market.  It has coverage of about 40 college programs. It also covers sports business, league and sport-wide topics. It has run a few articles on Stanford sports even though there is no dedicated reporter for Stanford.

It doesn't advertise anything on its pages and doesn't track any of your browsing behavior. The reporting and writing is generally outstanding.

Russian bots aligned with The Atlantic, no doubt.

The most 2020 post ever.

Agreed. It's a bastion of sanity and clear-eyed analysis in the maelstrom that is the sports world, and it's a steal. (My introductory price has expired, so I'm in for the standard price now, which I believe is about $5/mo if you get billed annually.)

Why not sign up for a new introductory rate when your subscription expires?   They seem to always be running a 40-50% discount.

RE: If you are a baseball fan... - Langdude - 01-06-2020

After one analysis of Stanford baseball players, I emailed Keith Law to ask if he had actually attended any Stanford baseball games in person.

He has a LOT of college and minor league players to observe and analyze, so he can't always be right, but he definitely creates some narratives and sticks with them, no matter what the evidence may say. One of them is the way that he sees Stanford as developing (or not) its players.

The Athletic is terrific. Law is not. Spitting out what a computer says is not analyzing talent.

RE: If you are a baseball fan... - Phogge - 01-06-2020

Tell that to Kapler and Farhan Mr. Lex.

RE: If you are a baseball fan... - OutsiderFan - 01-07-2020

Grant Brisbee has a (depressing) story on The Athletic this morning about the Giants' expected 26-man roster to start Spring and projections for who will be on it opening day.

https://theathletic.com/1513329/2020/01/06/heres-the-giants-26-man-roster-and-a-look-at-how-much-work-the-front-office-still-has-left/?source=twittered

And another one by Andrew Baggarly on 18 non-roster invitees:

It's time to take the Rip Van Winkle approach for Giants fans for at least the 2020 season. Seems like this is the 100-loss season we've all been expecting.

RE: If you are a baseball fan... - BobK - 01-07-2020

All one has to do is look at the roster. Worse that last year by far
But they just signed a minor league catcher who only strikes out 5 times for every 3 walks.
The new Giants

Farhan has a pretty good track record. And a method in place. But you know I don’t like the “all metrics” approach. Kapler won’t last past 2021.

2020 has a chance to be the worst year in SF Giants history. I hope they at least develop some young talent. I wonder how many will show up for Gabe Kapler Coconut Oil Day.

What an awful hire.

RE: If you are a baseball fan... - BostonCard - 01-07-2020

I had to look up the coconut oil reference.  I wish I hadn't.  Don't say I didn't warn you.
