MBB recruiting: Ziaire Williams - Papa John - 01-08-2020

Per Bob UNC was an early leader for 2020 5-star wing player Ziaire Williams, but now some self-proclaimed MBB experts think he will stay in the West. Per a recent interview on his Twitter feed, he's taking AP and honors classes and academics will play a prominent role in his college decision, which may not come until the spring.

Is it worth getting up my hopes about ZW playing for Stanford?

We are still in it. Staff was at his game last week.

This interview is from three weeks ago. If I had nothing else to go on, but this interview, I'd put us in the lead. That said, not only is he a top basketball player, but he comes across extremely well in this setting. Very likeable and impressive. Easy to root for.

In this interview, he comes off as very sharp as well.  It sounds like Haase has been, um, quite persistent in the recruiting.

Quote:What sticks out to you about Stanford?

They have just been on me the longest and the head coach shows me the most love by far. Over 365 letters at home just sitting in a shoe box from him. It’s crazy but we talk all the time, we’re close. Not even just the head coach but all of the assistants and players as well. It’s just a good bond that we have.

Well, if Haase hasn't yet pitched a tent on his front lawn to stay overnight, he hasn't shown EUTM...

FWIW, 247sports has us in the lead.

Are we out of the running for Ziaire Williams?

RE: MBB recruiting: Ziaire Williams - BobK - 01-21-2020

From the sport writer’s tweet maybe so. Five favs no Stanford
But so out of the blue let’s see if more news comes

If he’s waiting on Admissions, when will he hear?

Looks like that's somewhat flexible. The later signing period ends in April so there's plenty of time. Even then, who knows; remember that Jaiden Delaire was admitted and committed in August!

If he really is taking AP courses as reported by some sources, there is only one reason to be taking them.  He isn't taking them so that he can get into Arizona.

RE: MBB recruiting: Ziaire Williams - BobK - 01-21-2020

The signing period for basketball ends May 20. One can bypass that as you pointed out by signing a financial agreement

RE: MBB recruiting: Ziaire Williams - Papa John - 02-12-2020

Looks like the Ziaire Williams survivor competition is down to six: Stanford, Arizona, USC, UNC, UCLA and Oregon. Duke was voted off the island.

Duke has 6 signees in this class so it's no surprise he doesn't want to be a 7th.

UNC has 5 signees. Arizona has signed 2 6'6" wings/SFs already (Williams a 6'7" wing/SF). My gut - no insider info here - tells me it'll be either us, USC, or maybe Oregon. Williams has stated repeatedly he's in no rush to make a decision.

RE: MBB recruiting: Ziaire Williams - Papa John - 02-13-2020

And please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Arizona and USC still waiting to hear about their sanctions (if any) from the NCAA for rules violations? And yet, as far as I can tell, ZW has had official visits with only three schools: UNC, Arizono and USC.

I suppose this is too much hand-wringing for a long shot, but ZW would be one of the highest-rated recruits in the history of Stanford men's basketball, so it's difficult for me to look away.
