And a promotion
Source: #UNLV is expected to hire #Stanford inside linebackers coach Peter Hansen as defensive coordinator. Hansen has been with Stanford since 2013. The former Arizona football and basketball player also spent two years with the San Francisco 49ers staff.

You beat me to it, Bob.
Seems like a win-win for both parties. Hansen gets a promotion and we get a new LB coach. Excited and nervous for who the new coach will be; hoping it's a fierce recruiter. Both recent assistant hires, Kennedy and Carberry, have been jolts of energy from a recruiting perspective. We could certainly use that on D right now, ESPECIALLY in the front 7.

Bob, Hope you don't mind me editing the post to embed the tweet, though I see Sam added it.
Of all the coaches, I think this may have been the last guy I expected to move up the ranks due to a promotion. Anyways, congratulations to Pete Hansen and good luck with UNLV. As Sam mentioned, this strikes me as a win-win (at least for Hansen and Stanford, we'll see what happens at UNLV).

Since Ron Rivera has a job how about Shane Skov? He has EUTM in his toenails.

I wish him nothing but luck & success, but I see this as addition by subtraction.
Since Blake Martinez left, ILB has largely been a failure both in terms of recruiting and player development. Other than Fanboy Hero, this was the coach who I thought most needed to be replaced in the offseason.

Shayne has moved on from football entirely and has gone fully corporate (his linkedin profile has him as an associate for McKinsey).

Is that really necessary? One would hope that we can be respectful to our coaches and former players, even when we think they have done a lousy job. This particular player led the team on the most unlikely upset ever, and so will always have my gratitude for what he accomplished by beating USC, even if his coaching career ends up a complete flop.

I sincerely hope this was at least a mutual decision, not Shaw expecting Hansen to return, and then having him say he got a better offer.
People simply must be held accountable for performance or the entire enterprise will go down hill.

It's a whole lot more fun being in the field than it is working behind a desk. Just ask James Bond.

Outsider don’t you think this was unlv’s decision not Shaw’s.

Most likely, but I can still hope, right? :)

I initially planned to research some potential new hires, but I realized pretty quickly that he could come from basically anywhere and doesn't need to have Stanford ties at all. Look at the most recent assistant coach hires: 2 NFL assistants (Reynolds before his first stint, Carberry) and 3 proven college position coaches (Akina, Gould, Kennedy), none of whom had prior Stanford ties. So realistically we're looking at a pool of 32+ NFL defensive/LB assistants, any number of "lateral move" veteran P5 LB coaches, and any number of D1 HCs/DCs who have a track record of success with LBs (a la Gould with RBs before becoming HC at Davis). That's
a lot of guys.
I just hope the position gets filled relatively quickly, as we badly need traction with '21 LB recruiting and developing the younger LBs on our roster. For reference, Bloomgren was hired at Rice on 12/7/17 but remained with the team and coached in the Alamo Bowl on 12/25. We announced Carberry and Kennedy's hirings on 1/12/18. I hope it doesn't take a full month to replace Hansen.

I mean, Oregon fans weren't exactly upset to see him go.

UNLV's new head coach is Marcus Arroyo, who was Oregon's co-OC in 2017, and sole OC in 2018/19. As such, he would have gone up against our defense the last three years, and is probably in a better position to judge the effectiveness of our defense generally, and our inside linebackers specifically, than your average fan. He clearly liked what he saw from the opposite sideline (or the press box).

That is one way to look at it. Another and just as likely reason is they met previously and/or have a common coaching relationship. Don't forget, Hansen has NFL experience, which any college coach wants on his staff for recruiting purposes. I don't think too many coaches with NFL experience are landing at places like UNLV.

Hansen has two years of experience in the NFL, as a defensive assistant for the 49ers from 2011 to 2012. Arroyo was with Cal as QB and passing game coordinator those two years. Other than that Hansen has been at Stanford and Paly, and while Arroyo has traveled far and wide, his stops never included either destination.

Arroyo was a QB at San Jose State and played in three straight wins over Stanford 1998-2000.

Thanks for the painful reminder.
Hansen was a football and basketball player at the University of Arizona during those years, so no overlap.
