Good... I thought there might be a September 12 bye which wouldn't have been ideal.

I hope they let the returning students move into the dorms on September 18 so we can have a decent-sized student section for the USC game.

The only thing I don't like about this schedule is playing USC and UCLA back-to-back. These are traditionally important and emotional games, and asking the team to get ready ("up") for UCLA right after USC could be a bit difficult. All things considered, it could be a lot worse.

All in all not too bad given the even year schedule is always meh.
- Reasonably placed bye.
- Decent spacing of home games, with hopefully students only missing one (and a boring one at that) (OK I guess BYU too but that was going to happen on that day anyways).
- While I'm not crazy about weekday games, moving that particular game to Friday does help free up Halloween night.

UW and Wazzu fans are pissed...the Apple Cup is Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, at 5pm. In Pullman.

Yeah there’s a lot I like about the schedule, for an even-year, things could be worse.
While not a high-profile start, I am all for kicking off against William and Mary.
I like getting USC early as they break in their new staff.
Although the vs USC, at Ucla, at Notre Dame sequence is rough, the week before ND is a good time for a bye week (plus, after 4 weeks, there could be some injuries)
Although the Friday game against Oregon State is a bit odd and may be barren, it leaves 8 days before playing Washington the next week, and avoids and potential conflict with Halloween.
But — why is there only 1 bye? is there another one of those week 1 bye’s???

For an even year schedule this is probably the best we could get.
Pac-12 teams must participate in a weekday game most seasons, so getting a Friday before Halloween Saturday is a great deal.
The conference only has one Thursday game this season. I hope that trend continues because for Stanford, UCB, USC, and UCLA it is really hard to host Thursday games.
The BYE week before Notre Dame is a true gift.
The SC game should have great student attendance. It will be a great first game for the freshman and no classes/quizzes/labs yet. Just hope the dorms are open to returning students on or before that Saturday AM.

First day of classes for 2020 is Monday, September 21. Frosh move in the Wednesday before, and returning students can move back in beginning on Friday. So agreed, student attendance (especially from freshmen going with their entire dorms as a bonding activity) should be quite strong.

Glad USC game is not week 2.
Cal starts season a week earlier so it gets 2 byes, 1 of which is the week before Big Game.
Arizona also starts a week early and will have played 2 games before hosting Stanford.

Not seeing any schedules that show a time for the Apple Cup.

I think with Thanksgiving a couple of days earlier this year, and with our first game on September 5th rather than August 31st like last year, that that takes a week out of the season. I guess the question is, do most teams open on the September 5th weekend or the previous one?

To answer my own question, aside from a few isolated games (Arizona vs Hawaii), it looks like the majority of college football starts on the weekend of September 5th. So it's just a calendar quick that there is one fewer week to work with this year.

It probably won’t. The pac-12 restricts early games in Arizona in August/September.

Has a bye week ever been helpful to us against a formidable opponent? It's human nature to recall the bad more often than the good, but I recall being shocked on more than one occasion by a poor performance following a bye week.

"The Way We Were" nonwithstanding, I tend to agree with you, at least when it comes to Stanford football.
One of the most egregious I remember was in 1980, when with a bowl game on the line following a bye week we travelled up to play a 2-8 Kal team.
Despite having John Elway, we managed to lose.
It sort of set the tone for the Wiggin era.

Going back to the beginning of the millenium and only considering full bye weeks:
2000: Lost to UA 3-27
2001: Beat ASU 51-28, lost to WSU 39-45
2002: Lost to ASU 24-65
2003: Beat BYU 18-14, lost to USC 21-44
2004: Lost to USC 28-31
2005: Lost to Oregon 20-44
2006: Lost to USC 0-42
2007: Beat SJSU 37-0, lost to Notre Dame 14-21
2008: Beat WSU 58-0
2009: Beat Oregon 51-42
2010: Beat WSU 38-28
2011: Beat UCLA 45-19
2012: No full-week bye
2013: No full-week bye
2014: Beat UW 20-13, lost to Utah 17-20
2015: No full-week bye
2016: Beat USC 27-10
2017: Lost to USC 24-42
2018: Beat UCLA 49-42
2019: Lost to Colorado 13-16

This demands a comment about another AYFKM Big Game after a bye, in 1986.
To summarize 1980:
Stanford
- was 6-4 and had a Peach Bowl game in its grasp with a win
- had big stars on offense. Elway, Nelson, Margerum, Nabor
Cal
- was 2-8
- their head coach, Roger Theder, was expected to clean out his office
- had lost its starting QB (Rich Campbell) for the season, and his replacement had never started a game
- never had a running back rush for 100 yards in a game
After a porous defense that allowed Cal to march down the field to open the game, and
two Stanford turnovers inside the 10, the final score was 23-28.
Six years later, after a bye week:
Stanford
- was 7-2, and this time already had a Gator Bowl game invite
- had big stars on offense. John Paye, Brad Muster, Jeff James
Cal
- was 1-9
- their head coach had already been fired
- lost their starting QB to injury (Troy Taylor), and his replacement had never started a game
Yep, you guessed it. The team read the press clippings and saw the spread. Final score, 11-17.

Embo, the asterisk next to the 1986 game should read that John Paye's shoulder was so painful he could barely throw. It was still a horrible game to see in person. I almost never went back to Berkeley after 1980, 1982 and 1986. Glad that my friend talked me into returning for the 1990 Big Game.
