Women's Water Polo - Spiny_Norman - 01-28-2020

Defending NC Stanford women's water polo kicked off its season over the past 2 weekends with 5 victories. The team is ranked #2 right now. They had a really tough match vs. #3 UCI on Sunday but pulled out a 10-9 win.

This season Stanford is playing without 3 All Americans from last year's NC squad who still have eligibility remaining - Makenzie Fischer, Aria Fischer and Ryann Neushul. The Fischer sisters are on the roster for the US Senior National Team while Neushul is on the roster for the US Junior National Team. I hope that they will all return next year.

In the meantime, the team will be different without them. The leaders are probably going to be Sarah Klass (also on the US Junior National Team roster, but still playing college WP this season) and GK Emalia Eichelberger (2nd team AA last year). We'll see who else steps up as goal scorers among the frosh and others who might have been backups or role players last season.

Speaking of the US Senior National team, we should see a big Stanford presence at the Olympics in Tokyo. The roster currently includes the Fischer sisters, Jamie Neushul, Kiley Neushul, Jordan Raney, Melissa Seidemann, Maggie Steffens and Gabby Stone. The US women had won 69 consecutive matches before a recent loss to Australia.

Just waiting to add them to my "#1 ranked teams" thread! We need USC to take a loss, eh?

Preferably when we play them.

RE: Women's Water Polo - M T - 01-29-2020

Since my last post, I was hoping that Ryann, after being dropped from the national team, would join the Stanford team once the new quarter began, but apparently not.  5 more players have to be removed from the national team roster in time for the Olympics.  Stanford, with 8 players now, is the only school guaranteed to have current or alumni players on the Olympic team.  Indeed, no school can possibly have more than Stanford.

The Stanford WWP team plays at home this weekend, hosting the Stanford Invitational.  I hope I can make at least 2 of the games, so maybe I'll see some of you.   If you go to the MBB game at 3PM Saturday, you may get out just in time to see Saturday evening's game.

#2 Stanford - #23 Indiana 9AM Sat #11 UC Davis 11:15AM Sat
#2 Stanford - #7 Michigan 5:15PM Sat
#2 Stanford - #6 Cal 11AM Sun

FREE admission, I believe.  Saturday will be in the low 60s. Sunday will be chillier (mid 50s).
Sunday's game should be over just in time to catch the game on TV -- WBB, that is (@WSU, noon P12BA).

The first possible match between Stanford & USC will be Feb 23 at a UCI tournament.
The only scheduled meeting is March 29 at Stanford.

RE: Women's Water Polo - M T - 02-02-2020

FYI, Stanford won all 3 games they played. 12-4 over #11 UC Davis; 13-10 over #7 Michigan; 10-6 over #6 Cal.
Against UC Davis, 10 players had goals (2 had 2 goals).

I was at the Michigan game.  Lots of Michigan supporters in the stands.   After Stanford got up early, Michigan got up 5-4.  By the end, I felt Stanford had worn down Michigan and could have gotten a penalty shot on any possession they wanted, by just getting out in front in transition.  Stamen had 4 goals (2 on penalty shots), Shabb had 3.

Against Cal, Stanford also got ahead early but then Cal came back.  By the half, and for a long while in the 3rd, the score was tied 5-5. But Stanford finally pulled away.  Klass had 4 goals (1 on a penalty shot).

Stanford turnovers allowed Michigan back into the game.  This team is clearly not as good as last year, but they're still developing.  I haven't seen USC yet, so I can't offer an opinion as to whether they outclass Stanford or not.  It's a shame to have such a good team that every 4 years, you lose a bunch of players.  But I guess that's better than not being that good!

Ask and ye shall receive.

You may have to wait for the poll to come out tomorrow, but #1 USC lost 5-7 to #3 UCLA yesterday, after having to come from behind to beat #7 UCSD.

Stanford (7-0), UCLA (14-1), USC(6-1) all participate in a tournament at UCI in about 10 days.

RE: Women's Water Polo - Hurlburt88 - 02-11-2020

Do I read this correctly that we and USC have played 7 games, whereas UCLA has played 15?    If so, is there some tournament(s) that have given them that many more?

The records I gave were from each team's site's schedule page.  I did a double take on that number as well.

All teams started the weekend of 17-Jan, meaning there have been 4 weekends of play.
UCLA played 5 matches over that first Fri-Sat-Sun, 4 the next Sat-Sun, 2 the next Fri-Sat, and 4 the next Sat-Sun (this past weekend).
Stanford played 2 matches that first Sat, 3 the next Sat-Sun, 3 the next Sat-Sun, and none the past weekend.

The NCAA has (complicated) limits on how much time a sport can require an athlete to participate per week.   I'm a little surprised that 5 matches can be played on a weekend and still fit under those limits, unless they reduced countable hours during the week (beyond the day-off per week).  5 matches would seem to require (at least) 8 hours out of the limit of 20 per week.   It seems UCLA has already used 9 of its 21 competition days while Stanford has only used 5.

The rankings have not yet been updated this week as I type this.  Probably will be posted on Wednesday (polling apparently happens after Monday noon EST, and bears Monday's date).

RE: Women's Water Polo - fullmetal - 02-12-2020

I was under the impression that competition hours didn't count toward practice hours.

RE: Women's Water Polo - Papa John - 02-12-2020

We're number 1!

Stanford is getting rolled today by USC in the championship of the UC Irvine tournament. It's 9-2 Trojans in the 3rd period.

Ouch. 10-5 the final. Looks like dreadful shooting, 31 attempts, only 12 on goal, scoring 5. 0 for 3 on penalty shots. A yellow card and a red card, to boot.

RE: Women's Water Polo - Spiny_Norman - 02-23-2020

The rematch on March 29 (which will be televised on P12N) will definitely be one to watch.

The game this past weekend doesn't count toward ranking for the MPSF tournament.  The match (at Stanford) on March 29 does.  The winner of the MPSF tournament will likely have the NCAA #1 seed.

The red card (4Q) was against the bench (not the coach nor any player).  I'm not sure what that means.  The time it was awarded doesn't align with a goal or an exclusion (or penalty shot).   The yellow (2Q) was against the Stanford coach.

Stanford's top 4 scorers for the season were all shut out.

Stanford played 13 players.  USC played 21 players.  (None with a last name of Huneeus)
